Hi All,
Well we have snow and it is cold but nowhere near as bad as in other parts of the country! To warm myself up I was doing a little port research for the cruise.
We are planning doing most of the ports on our own, partly to save money, partly because they look quite easy to do on your own but mainly because with two small children it means we can be flexible and do what will suit us for the exact amount of time we want to rather than sticking to someone elses schedule. Being from the UK this cruise is in our backyard so to speak so for us this is not a "must see everything the ports have to offer as we might never come back" type trip. Just some nice relaxed family time with Captain Mickey and co
So far these are my plans, they may change, they may not and a bit more research will firm them up a bit!
Dover - Get on the ship! That's it, I live about 2 and a half hours away I won't be combining the day with a trip anywhere, just get onboard!
We are arriving the day before, hopefully early afternoon. Plan on dropping lugage and a quick tour of Dover Castle. Morning of cruise will probably breakfast and then straight on board. TOO excited for anything else at that point!
Cherbourg - Probably treat it as an extra sea day. We may get off and have a wander if there looks to be anything much in the vicinity we want to see. I am hoping that a lot of people will take day trips to the sites of the Normandy landings etc and leave us with a nice empty ship!
Definaely a trip to the Gold Beach and Arromanches to fill up on family history.
Vigo - We are planning to head to Samil Sands beach, according to cruise critic it is approx 20 mins in a cab and around 5-6 euros - even at double that it will be way way less than
DCL will charge for a beach day. This way we can go when we like and get back when we like.
Hoping Disney will do a trip to Santiago de compostella to see the way of St James. We are not very religious but I did medieval history at uni- hence Dover Castle and this was a major pilgrimage site thrid after Jerusalem and Rome.
Lisbon - I think we might try to be up early, head to the Oceanarium in the morning and come back around lunch time. I will probably check Olivia into Flounders and Izzy at the club and get off for a little wander around Belem which is very close to the cruise ship doc and very olde worlde cobbled streets and monasteries type place!
Exploring on our own.
Cadiz - someone here on the Dis posted about going to La Caleta beach which is where the beach scenes set in Cuba were filmed for James Bond - Die Another Day... Halle Berry doing an Ursula Andress impression! Then on the way back is apparently a lovely park called Parque Genoves which looks beautiful. We really aren't that beachy people but our girls will love to play in the sand and a stroll through the park and feeding the ducks on the way back will be nice.
Exploring on our own again
Gibralter - One of my good friends is married to a man who has a lot of family living in Gibralter so she is going to give me the lowdown on touring Gibralter. Of course we will visit the Rock and see the apes but aside from that we will probably just have a wander round and take in the sights.
Exploring on our own and trip to military graves as mentioned before
Barcelona - well my DH was so keen to fly into our nearest airport after a disasterous journey home from Gatwick after our Florida trip last summer, that we have a really early flight home. So we won't see any of Barcelona on this trip as we will be aiming to be first off the ship and on the first transfer back to the airport.
A couple of days in Barcelona just to supplement what we saw in 2007 and then flight home
Phew, well that is our plans at the moment. Anyone else care to share their thoughts on what to do in each of the ports?
Mel
