July 29, 2013 Wonder Alaska

Hi! Would love suggestions on places to eat. We are planning on going to Stanley park, Grouse Mountain, the suspension bridge. We will be staying at Pan Pacific. Just looking for causal or no dress up places to eat. Also wondering if t is necessary to exchange money ahead of time or if we could just do that at a bank in Vancouver if necessary. I heard we might need Canadian money for public transportation.

My apologies for the late answer. If you can change your money before you get to Canada, you will probably get a more favorable rate in the US. The dollars are trading at almost par these days, so you can expect to get less than $1.00 CAD for $1.00 USD.

The dress code at most Vancouver restaurants is casual. If you want a great breakfast, try Paul's omelettery on Granville. West 4th Avenue has a wonderful selection of restaurants, as does Commercial Drive.

Hello! Only 66 days until our FIRST cruise EVER! I can't believe it is an Alaskan on Disney. So excited I can hardly stand it.:woohoo:

This will be a girls' trip for me (45), my daughter (10), and our friend (32).

So far we've booked:
Skagway.....Yukon Jeep Adventure and Ocean Raft Nature Adventure.
Juneau.....Mendenhall Lake Canoe Adventure.
Ketchikan....Bear Creek Zipline (booked it on our own).

We are arriving in Vancouver the day before. Any advice on a good hotel? And, what will I need Canadian money for? Everything? Where is the best place to get it?

One more question: We have been assigned late dining....only choice left....and VERY late for my daughter although she is excited about the dine and play option. Trying to decide if I should get on a wait-list for early dining or just leave it as is. Any ideas?:confused3

Thanks for answering this newbie's questions!

It's our first cruise ever! And we'd like to join in on the FE fun.

5505 (Armstrong) Mom, Isaac (DS13), Piper (DD9)
and our friends in 5009 (Berends) Mom, Mirthe(DD15)

Can't wait!

Please clarify the names if I've screwed them up.

Can someone explain to a noobie (me!) what a FE is and how it works? Thanks.

A FE=Fish Extender is a vehicle for an onboard gift exchange.

There's a metal fish outside the stateroom doors on the classic Disney ships.

During the first (I think) Panama Canal cruise, DISers set up a gift exchange and delivered items to each other by putting them in Fish Extenders which hung from the fish next to the door.

The Fish Extender itself could be as simple as a grocery bag or as complex as this:

All you have to do is say that you want to participate and let us know who is in your cabin. Then have fun coming up with gift(s) for your new DIS friends. Finally, have a great time delivering and receiving your gift(s)!

That is fantastic! Thank you for explaining that. Once we have our cabin, I'll be sure to share.

Been off the boards for a week, but for good reason. In the category of "It's a Small World" DD13 is a student in Moore Public Schools and took refuge in her jr high school, about 1 mi north of destruction path, during last week's storm. Below is a pic of the twister looking south from the HS next door. That is our neighborhood just past the flagpole.

just wanted to tell all DisBoards friends from every corner of the U.S. thank you for the support, love and donations your communities have sent to our hometown of Moore. We appreciate it.

We are absolutely fine, but looking very forward to July 29!

For the past 2 weeks I was enjoying the thread for Great FE Gifts until I got to the end today and saw that this thread is closed. Does anyone know why? Also is there another thread that was started? I enjoyed seeing what other folks were making and it gave me wonderful ideas.

Thanks!

So glad to know that you are safe. I can't imagine that kind of devastation.

When threads reach a certain amount of posts, the moderators close them. Sometimes there will be a warning to start a new thread, if they want to continue a conversation. I saw this happen in the princess half marathon one. Sometimes there is no warning and you just have to search for them again. Sometimes they will put part 2 after the title or use something similar. Hope this helped some.

I'd like to sign up for the FE list. The first cabin is my family and the second cabin is my SIL and her family. BTW, both David and Brian have nut allergies.
