Hi all,

Well, I'm so sad to say that we won't be on this cruise after all :sad1:

My dd has to go to summer school, and it doesn't let out until August 3rd. I'm majorly bummed. I was really looking forward to having fun w/all of you. (sigh)

So, you guys have to have EXTRA fun for me, okay? :)

Have a great cruise! :wave2:

I call DCL to ask about the package they are sending out about the Med Cruises. The agent said they are just about ready and will be sent our by March 1st.....I know they give a lot of different answers....but hopefully soon!

Thank you for the info... Look forward to getting it.

I am sorry to hear this Mary Jo. This is the first time in 7/8 years that I am not worrying about summer school/Regents Tests (NY State tests), etc. I will though again for the next four years once my dd starts high school in Sept. I then only plan for first week after school lets out or last two weeks before school starts end of August (which I prefer). I don't like it :sad2:

Again, sorry you won't be joining us.

Here are my choices for hotel stay after our cruise: Can anyone give me input?

Hilton diagonal mar: $1180 (2 rooms—triple occupancy in each room) located 10-15 minutes from the port, by Diagonal Mar Mall—1.8 miles to beach

AC Barcelona: $1080 (2 rooms) 13 miles from airport, 10-15 minutes to port, beach 300 meters, by the Olympic Village and a cathedral

Hotel Athena Mar $920 located 1 mile from port, downtown 3 miles, beach 200 meters.

Hausa Illa $748 located about 10-15 minutes from the port, beach 3 miles, near Cathedral and Picaso museum

Grand marina hotel, $1240, at the port, by the world trade center.

Hotel Hesperia Presidente $920 10 miles from airport, in business area, beach 1.8 miles from hotel, port 10-15 minutes away.

FWIW -- We decided to stay at the Eurostars Grand Marina prior to the cruise. Proximity to the port was one issue, but we'll still need to take a taxi or shuttle to Adossat Wharf. Moreover, I like the modern/minimalist decor.

Having read innumerable horror stories about the crime (particularly pickpockets) in Barcelona, I also hope that Barcelona Wharf would feel like a (relatively) secure enclave.... As I understand it, pregnant women & nursing mothers are immune from prosecution, so some gangs of pickpockets are organized in matriarchical fashion.
Tourists are rightly worried about Barcelona's reputation as pickpocket heaven. Here is the low-down.

(1) Any theft under 50,000 of the old Pesetas (around 300 dollars) is not considered a ‘crime’ at all - providing no violence is used. Under Spanish law it is labelled ‘hurto’. This means if the culprit is caught, he (or she) will be released back onto the streets within half an hour of making a statement at the police station. There are old hands in the Gothic Quarter who have been nabbed by the cops up to 200 times without ever serving a day in prison.

(2) There are no fewer than five separate (badly co-ordinated) police forces in the city but you won’t see many cops patrolling the streets. Spain has one of the highest ratios of police per thousand inhabitants of any country in the EU but you would never guess it.

(3) If you are an illegal immigrant, committing petty crime is one way of staying in the country. You can’t be deported if there is a legal case pending against you. This problem is compounded by:

(4) The sloth and inefficiency of the Spanish Justice system. Courts are woefully understaffed, have virtually no computers, fail to cross-reference records, and often take years to hear cases. There have been several instances of murderers set free because the case is time-barred when it finally gets to court. Add to this the poor training given to Spanish judges and idiosyncratic (not to say idiotic) sentencing and you have all the ingredients of a disaster.

All this is well-known to both local criminals and the ones who flood in from abroad, the latter attracted by the rich pickings of Barcelona in the summer and the negligible risks involved.

A map of danger areas is to be found in ‘Barcelona Business’ an English language newspaper (look out for the pink paper on newstands).

Las Ramblas in Barcelona: According to Commandant Miguel Lalom Clotet of the Barcelona Tourist Police, there are two major groups operating in the city, and our own observations confirm this. They are the gypsies and the north Africans; and their techniques are as far apart as their homelands.

The gypsies we've seen "working" in Barcelona are mostly female, mostly in pairs or small groups, and always on the move. Be watchful of your bags in La Rambla hotel lobbies; there are frequent reports of mysterious losses there, where guests feel secure. Do enjoy the enticing outdoor cafés, but do not place your bags under your chair or slung behind you.

The north Africans are mainly illegal Algerians and Morroccans, according to the Tourist Police. They work almost exclusively in pairs. They are both brazen and careful, working smack in the middle of moving crowds on Las Ramblas. Some specialize in stealth moves, while others employ a unique "soccer move," whereby they manipulate the leg of the victim, then apologize. We've seen them extract wallets from backpacks, front pockets, back pockets, and purses. Your only defense is awareness.

The trickiest ploy in Barcelona is the pigeon poop drop, a local twist on the Old Mustard Trick, usually perpetrated by South Americans. The target mark is surrepticiously squirted with a whitish liquid, and soon after approached by the culprit himself. It's perfectly believable when he points out the pigeon poop on your pants, given the leafy green canapé above and fluttering cacophony around you. The concerned volunteer may help you brush off the mess right there, or he may take you into a nearby café to clean you up. In either case, he's always long gone before you discover your pocket empty.

Watch out for the three-shell game—you cannot win. Operators whip out a cardboard box as a table and use hollowed carrot ends as cups, a green pea as the ball. A team can comprise a dozen or so with players, shills, and spotters. At the first sign of police, game's over. Vegetables are scattered and the cardboard box is collapsed and tossed against a trash can or tree.

Sadly, bag-snatchers abound in Barcelona, but usually in the labyrinthine lanes off Las Ramblas, where they can disappear in an instant. Do not resist a bagsnatcher, as they have become more desperate and more determined in recent years. Several women have been killed and other injured in resulting falls.

La Sagrada Familia, the must-see cathedral designed by Antoni Gaudi over a hundred years ago and still under construction: All Barcelona's no-goods seem to converge at this important attraction. Go anyway! Just beware and keep your guard up. Pay the nominal entry fee and explore the cathedral.

Palma de Mallorca: Do not accept a flower from a woman. It's a well-known ploy to get their fingers into your wallet. Believe it, it happens. If a girl or woman approaches you with a sheet of cardboard or newspaper, back off. Shout at them to get away. They're experts at pockets and fanny packs.

Our own experience w/pickpockets. My mom & I were at the Atocha train station in Madrid, and a well-dressed man came to us asking if we knew how to get to the other train station, Chamartin. While I was explaining to him how to get there, his partner (never saw him) took my backpack that I had laid down while I spread out a map we had. They took my mom's passport, cameras, credit cards... It was bad. So, also beware of people coming to ask you questions.

We were approached by a gypsy woman with a flower at Palma de Mallorca. She offered the flower to my friend, and then demanded money. She was very aggressive. Another time, we were in a popular park in Madrid, El Retiro, and a gypsy woman came by with her little toddler asking us for money. When we declined, she walked away & smacked her baby on the back of the head in disgust. I was shocked.

Here's a little story... I was w/a group of friends in some famous Madrid taverns called "Las Cuevas" - these are near the Plaza de Madrid & pretty cool since they're so old. (I lived in Madrid for a year when I was 21 & in college - went to the University there on an exchange program.) Anyways, some friends & I were in this tavern with a very friendly group of people, as is usually the case, and this gypsy sitting next to us struck up a conversation with us. We asked him how he learned to speak English so well, and he replied that he worked with tourists. We asked him what he did, and he said that he cheated and stole from them... but we shouldn't worry because we were one of "them" since we were living there. .... Never forgot that.

How many Claudios are there??? Should have a group booking. I booked mine in summer 2006 as well.

So we're all booked for August 2nd, right? I just changed my reservation to a group of 8. Leaving one kid behind on the boat. That makes the trip to Rome very economical:cool1: .

I'm also booked at the Grand Marina. I just booked directly with them because of the flexibility to cancel or modify the reservations. Seems like the other discount sites, you can't change or cancel without paying something. I'm not sure how people are booking. Not sure why the difference with what Disney is offering unless they booked a slew of rooms and just averaged the cost of all of them?

MV Photon - After reading your posting on Barcelona, I'm scared to leave the hotel. Well, I might sneak out.

I'm also booked at the Grand Marina.

I booked the Grand Marina Hotel through an Orbitz supersaver deal last year. I got a reasonably good rate, but had to pay in full far in advance. Their published rates are ludicrously steep! :scared1:

Despite claiming to feature two double/queen beds, Eurostars would not book my reservation to accomodate more than three people (including children) in one room :confused3 ; so, the DSs will have a private room there, too.

Sorry MJ....................:confused3 ...........the more we all read about the "pickpockets, etc.........the more prepared we are...........it makes me want to only book DCL for excursions..............the stress of being out on the streets is NOT WORTH IT!!!!!!

Oh well, I guess there is no real safe situation!!:sad2:

Yeah, thats what I didn't like, was having to pay up front. I got my two pre-cruise nights for $245/nite and post nite at $225 preVAT. Is that the steep price you are talking about? Disney wanted $310.

Eurostars Grand Marina, official web site: http://www.grandmarinahotel.com/eng/index.html

Current rates for 7/27/2007 (...not too bad, actually):
  • Superior Double -- $247
  • Deluxe Room -- $273
  • Premier -- $300
  • City Suite -- $358
  • Junior Suite -- $391
By booking last year, I paid $266 per room per night. At that time, they were "officially" asking $900 - $1000/night per room! Evidently, their marketing strategy is to vary rates according to demand/occupancy. In retrospect, I wish that I had waited....

Interesting. When I was checking earlier this year it kept on coming up full, I booked more into the city and La Rambler.

Disney is still $310 per night...does that include taxes and everything? Andrew, which of the Disney hotels should I choose if we want to be close to the beach? Is the Grand marina worth the stay since we will not be backfor a very long time?

Hey all, we're all in FL for the w/e for my DH's first marathon, wish us luck!:cool1:

Grand Marina is of course the closest but expensive.

Andrew, I think I am down to these two...trying to decide if the $200 is worth it for the Grand Marina.....can you walk to a beach from the Grand Marina?

Gretchen (my DD10) e-mailed Alice last night. I told Gretchen that it was the middle of the night "Alice time"....she loved that idea!! Have you guys found other kids their age on the cruise? Our group of 25 is mostly adults....we have girls, 10, 12, 13 and boys 16, and 18.

I have no idea what Gretchen says.....she sends her own e-mails and I do not read them first. I hope it was at least legiable!!!
