An old thread for sure, but this made me think of this podcast discussion that happened a few years ago. The more time I spend in MI the more I realize that this is such an amazing state! If you like water, beaches, or boats this is REALLY and truly a beautiful place. In addition to the Great Lakes there is also hundreds of beautiful inland lakes (my favorite so far is Torch Lake)

there is also such great variety in this state! From the metropolitan Detroit and southeast mi to the tranquil and scenic UP. It is a huge state, I recently had a nine and a half hour commute to work! I had to work way up in the UP, but it was a GORGEOUS drive!

Torch Lake is fabulous!

And UP is short of Upper Peninsula, for those not familiar with Michigan lingo. If you live in the UP, you are known as a Yooper. (Think of the Swedish chef when you say it.) If you live in the southern (mitten) peninsula, you are a Troll, because you live beneath the Bridge.

It's really kind of sad that when most people think of our fair state they automatically think "Detroit". As people have mentioned, this state is so much more than one city and anyone who has ever visited the west side or northern parts of the state are usually pleasantly surprised.

I think New York suffers much of the same issue. Upstate NY is gorgeous, but most people automatically think about the bright lights and busy streets of NYC.

We have non beach related activities in MI as well
