Journey to DVC

My wife and I just bought our first DVC contract. We actually received the points in our account today. It was a long but quiet journey. For the past few years, I would periodically check the Disney DVC website only to be turned away at the $50k+ price tag they suggested I needed to pay. I even have a key that Disney sent me to check out their promo video.

My parents treated me and my family to what I now call the most expensive free trip ever in April. We stayed at OKW and outside of the transportation, we loved it. I realized I would never stay off-grounds again. I just remember thinking, we cannot afford a vacation like this. Everything seemed expensive and I felt weird having my parents pay for a lot of things I wouldn’t have wanted to pay for at the time.

Looking back, I have changed my mind on some of those things. First, I’m paying a lot for kids meals. And that is to be expected. It’s Disney. My boys are happy and I’m happy they are happy. Second, we save our money and we are saving for Disney. It’s not going on the credit cards.

But there were a couple of catalysts for our decision to buy DVC. In our family, you have the option of a family party, a friend party, or a family trip for your birthday. My middle son chose a trip and he wanted to go to the Wisconsin Dells for a weekend in September. Being off-season, the accommodations were cheaper than normal. But three days and two nights in this tourist trap cost me $1,500. And I did not enjoy much of it beyond my kids being happy to swim.

The second was when my wife and I began to look at trip ideas for our 10 year anniversary. We started looking at a lodge in Door County, WI. A week would cost us more than $1,700. We then looked at the Smokey Mountains. Cabins were about $400+ per night. I then suggested Disney and my wife loved that idea. We booked a week at AoA and invited my parents along. They didn’t seem thrilled with the idea of AoA and told us that we might want to look at DVC instead.

Sure enough, they were right. We now get to stay at better resorts for less.

Sure, Disney is expensive. But so are most places. And my kids cannot wait to go back.

That’s enough for me.

DVC is horrendously expensive, no question, however, if you go to Disney semi-regularly, then DVC gives better vacations for less. You can't beat the quality and convenience and FUN of staying in a DVC resort.

AND, there is another benefit. So far DVC holds its value. So, it is likely that you will be able to use it, essentially for the cost of the yearly membership fees, and then in the end get a significant chunk of your money back, if you sell it before it gets too close to the expiration date.

What is the to close date?

Depends on which resort and contract you’re talking about. However, clearly many contracts such as boardwalk and etc on resale have maintained significant value despite only having 20 years left on the contract. I imagine the value of these contracts is going to drop like a rock within the last few years but that’s really just a testament to how much value these DVC contracts retain over time.

Congrats! I wish you and your family many happy years of magical memories.

Congrats and welcome home! As for the “most expensive free vacation” comment… that is what we lovingly refer to as Disney math in our house! We have 2 boys - 23 months apart and we joined when our youngest was just shy of 2. It was the best decision ever. So much so that we’ve had a few cases of add-on-itis! Enjoy the purchase… enjoy the time with family!

:welcome:

You've hit on many reasons to buy DVC! We save for our two annual trips and enjoy time with our son and DIL. It is VERY expensive, however as you point out so is everything else. Let the planning begin!!

We have our first trip booked for August 2023 and we are budgeting around $2000 for airfare, a little more than $3000 for park tickets, about $2000 for food, and about $500 for souvenirs. So yeah, crazy expensive. But here is where DVC makes up for it: we will spend less than $1800 on MF and our rooms between Poly LV and a couple of nights at AK 1BR SV would cost us north of $8000. Just a week at AoA would cost more than our dues. My boys are so excited they are going back to WDW. Just seeing them smile when we told them we would go back was worth it. I guess the trip will be bonus.

I wish we had joined a bit earlier, but I didn’t find resale until recently and the direct prices seemed out of this world. Once we actually visited in April, we realized we should go for it (albeit resale.)

My wife and I already think this will be a great decision for our family! Our boys cannot wait to go back to WDW and neither can I.

It's so funny that you used the Dells as your example because that is the exact reason we used to vacation at DW with our kids when they were little. When I was young, my family always took summer vacations to the Dells until we started making annual trips to Florida when I was about 11 years old. Sometimes we would go to one Disney park, but more often than not, we would just go to the beach. Fast forward to when my kids were little, and my boss at the time generously let us use his Marriot timeshare every other year to take our kids to DW. When we were no longer able to use the timeshare, we started pricing out vacations to the Dells thinking it would much cheaper than going to DW and paying for our own lodging. It was cheaper, but thanks to free dining, driving and value resorts, not by much. And a week at DW for a couple hundred dollars more obviously trumps a week in the Dells. Now we are considering purchasing DVC so that we can spend quality vacation time with our adult kids and future grandchildren. You are smarter than us and bought earlier in life. And I agree with you; the people on these boards are very nice and helpful. :-)
