Can we take a quiet moment to think about Gary Coleman?

He died today, aged 42. He was a child star who earned a lot of money. He grew up to be something of a wreck of a human being.

Under the Coogan Law, and Gary's work fell under that, his rights were still insufficiently protected. Even the CA Coogan Laws are flawed. He sued his parents because they failed to protect even 15% of the money he earned while portraying Arnold.

His parents exploited him. For cash. He struggled in adulthood because there was no money left after all his hard work. His parents had used it all.

The Gosselin kids have so far lacked the protection of even a Coogan-type law in PA, although better legislation is pending. Will it be enough?

Gary would support legislation to protect them, I am sure.

So sad. RIP Arnold.

Agreed, we will agree to disagree. Although I can say that if proof is needed for one of my 'outsider looking inside' opinions, I don't think I will be able to provide that. Although if Kate +8 decides to do a field trip to Orange County NY I may take a stroll and of course bring my camera phone. Hmm now what is worthy enough in my area to get them to come here, no water parks, no characters, no kid museums, hmmm I'm going to sleep on it and see if I can think of something in the morning. Good night!
Maybe they'll come to Rhinebeck for the air show..or is that Columbia Cty? Close enough. I"ll come down for that and bring big lenses..LOL.

cha-ching. it's alllll about the money. you've said it many times -- sponsors and ad space. if you didn't know who she was before DWTS and got sucked in, you need to know how she got here. and what better way than to show the 2 ugliest JK8 episodes?

My guess is that Kate will spend the first 30 minutes of the 2 hour show explaining how alone the aloneness is, so people can get caught up, too.

I can't believe that sponsers still want to be associated with this mess. I know I for one will never look at vanilla ice cream in Disney World the same again as it will remind me how nutso some parents are about appearances. Even the thought of a "Crooked House" makes me immediately depressed, and I wouldn't want one in my yard, lest I think about crazy Kate trying to control the world. That episode was just sad on steroids. I can't even llook at a Juicy Juice can. Even paper plates sitting in my cabinet casue me to cringe sometimes, thinking how Kate is too lazy to stack plates after a meal. I can't shop in Toy's R Us without cringing at the thought of a woman verbally abusing her husband in front of the nation in front of her kids. I can't pass Gymboree without thinking about 8 little billboards for the store and their sad little faces in all the family photo shoots of a couple years ago. Those kids were miserable.

If I was a sponser , I wouldn't want Kate within 100 yards of my product.

Wow. This show really has had an impact on you. I think I'd stay far away from any TV show that did this to me. I wonder how common this is?
Things like this don't cross my mind. I'm a coupon user & I don't think of the coupon episode as I'm doing so (or not doing so!)

I did block VH1 from my TV last might because they had a reality show on about people needing treatment for OCD problems and I decided I did not want my DD anywhere near a show like that one.

I agree..that really is a big impact. I never even connected paper plates with Kate, even when watching the show (and I camp a lot, so that's good, since we use them often). I figured she was prob saving water by not having to run the dishwasher as often (she still stacks them when collecting them from the kids, I never once thought it was because she was too lazy to collect real plates). The other stuff has never been thought of either, once the show was over...at least not as part of my life or enough to make me cringe or upset. It certainly wouldn't depress me.
I think it will be smart of you not to watch this go around (which I guess you had no plans to). Do any other shows upset you like this?

As much as I dislike Kate, I do joke about being just like Kate when I use paper plates. In fact my kids just finished eating eggs on paper plates with plastic forks. WE had so many kids over last night for pizza that all my dishes are in the dishwasher and I forgot to run it.

I also understand (to some degree) about the ice cream stuff and her being so neat. I am not this way but my ocd thing is about the doors being locked and stuff being turned off. She truly can't help herself in that area, I know that I would love to not be this way. It takes me forever to go to bed because of my OCD. Hubby can't stand Kate but teases me that he wished my OCD would turn like Kate's and I would become a clean freak. Oh well.

My dislike of Kate involves her putting her kids out there and mostly her attitude of poor mouthing like she is just a mom living on limited means. I don't begrudge her the house or the trips, just admit that yes they aren't normal and yes they get huge amounts of stuff from TLC and sponsers and quit acting like she is just a normal average mom, because she is so far removed from that it is in her words, "just plain rediculous.

Like DMRick, I hate the other boards that are nothing but Kate haters. I don't have a problem with what she wears, shoot< I didn't even really have a problem with the bikini she wore at Discovery Cove, as long as she is covered I don't care. More power to her. I actually think that she is an attractive woman. Also, I agree that until people stop watching she won't go away, but just like the news, train wrecks sell, and she is a train wreck.

Well looks like Kate can't make ends meet without pulling her kids back on tv. So sad that those kids didn't have a normal childhood because there parents were to dumb to protect them. Looks like Kate got some backlash from DWTS due to the fact that she made a fool of herself, just like the kids get backlash when they have a meltdown on camera (probably after the 10th take).
Is Discovery cove hurting that much for business that they had to feature the Gosselin family?? Big deal, so they have 8 kids. On my street we have 2 families that have 8 kids, one in fact has 9. I don't see them getting any freebie vacations to air their dirty laundry.
Doesn't Kate realize that her kids are growing up and aren't babies anymore?? After all the turmoil that this family has gone through, she needs to wake up and move on with her life without exploiting her kids anymore. Shame on TLC for promoting another trainwreck involving this family. I wonder what room in their house could be made over--maybe the laundry room??:confused3

If they had 6 or so of them all at once, they prob could get stuff for free. Even those not on TV much, like the Dilly's got stuff for free (recently they had their birthday party paid for by the Food network, along with the cake). Seems like it's very popular right now to have a bunch and put them on TV. I'm trying to figure out why the couple with the 6 on WE are on TV. She must have a pretty good income as a doctor. Her husband has a job. I would have thought she could have gotten a professional discount for her 'girls' lift and tummy tuck, and not had to have a tv show pay for it. They aren't pushing their religion, none of their children were born with problems they might want to bring attention to. None of them are 'little people'. She has gotten some criticism for the way she talks to her husband (about his weight and his lack of helping), did they never see the K & J and wonder what could happen to their marriage?

Obviously these are popular... they are adding yet another multiple birth family this coming season.

I haven't seen these people much, but I do find it odd. I saw them once on a morning show and they showed clips. It seems to me that a lot of these shows are trying to imitate Jon and Kate, right down to the things that the wives say. It is so copycat. There was another show about the little people that had a normal sized baby, and she sounded just like Kate. It is almost like they see Kate being a big draw and so they try to copycat the show. It is very strange.

I am not familiar with any of the other shows that have been mentioned, except I have seen previews for the Duggars. It must be a trend or something but it did get me thinking.....

Is it just me or does it seem like these networks are making it appear that have multiples is like winning a game show? Tell them what they've won- exotic trips and freebies all you have to do is give up your pride, privacy and the self esteem and well being of your many children!

TLC is getting ridiculous. They seem to be treating these people like circus side shows...multiple children, little people big world, little chocolatiers, multiple children, multiple children, children with physical issues (like mermaid girl, rapidly aging child, etc.) hoarders, one big happy family and toddlers and tiaras. I wonder how they come up with ideas for shows like these? And isn't there a new family of quintuplets on TLC now? I saw a commercial for it and the dad was complaining about having so many kids, he misses his wife and said that people say children are blessing, ya right. His words, not mine.

Now my only exception is that I love Cake Boss! Weren't we all laughing over that a while back and saying we were going to do the drinking game for every time he said modeling chocolate:laughing:

I agree totally about TLC and their circus freak show. If the Gosselin parents were smart (but they weren't and never will be) they would of had a lawyer draw up a contract and work out all the finances, etc....before they decided to get divorced. They would be sitting on easy street right now and would have the money to pay for the years of counseling those kids are going to need. I'm talking that this should of been done before any filming took place. Child stars rarely catch a break!:sad2:

If I remember correctly she wasn't a physician, but a physician's assistant.

I believe you are correct (it's the little couple wife who is the doctor, right?), but around here, PA's are very well paid. I still wonder why on earth they would have any need to go on TV with their batch of kids. She's not staying home with her kids, so I assume they both have paychecks.
According to a google search (and I don't know what it is in Florida where they just moved to, but it's higher in this area):

The median expected salary for a typical Physician Assistant - Medical in the United States is $82,968. This basic market pricing report was prepared using our Certified Compensation Professionals' analysis of survey data collected from thousands of HR departments at employers of all sizes, industries and geographies.

It's also been discussed that Kate could be earning a paycheck but for the amount of kids, cost of childcare etc it was stated right here on the dis that it wouldn't make sense. This other family (and I admit I am not familiar with them) are both working outside of the home and are still choosing to be on TV.. Makes me think that maybe they are doing this to see if at some point one of them could stay home, if it's good enough for the Gosslins then this other family should go for it.

I never got the idea the mom had any interest in ever staying home with her kids (she loves her job), and she complained in the teasers about the amount of money her husband made with whatever he is doing now that they have moved, so I doubt he'll be staying home anytime soon (plus he complained when she complained that he should do more when he got home taking care of the kids..he complained he did a lot and he was tired). They do have grandparents who babysit for them, (and one show showed her interviewing a sitter, but I never saw that person sitting again, but she did have one other person) however, so that must help what they would pay for sitters.

I doubt Kate as a begining nurse would make anything near what this women is making, unless she worked double shifts. I thought her husband had a good job too, but I think he might have changed when they moved.

All of this is from memory, so it will be interesting to see if there are any changes. People don't seem to be upset that they are on TV, so I assume there will be some talk about it. I don't feel she watched her kids very well, and I was always talking to her through the TV to watch out...one headed towards the road, one almost fell down an embankment, they get on the wrong side of the fence when they had a pool, etc. They also seemed to always feed them frozen chicken pieces like MacDonalds sells. No worries about paper plates, since if I remember right, she just put the food directly on their little table LOL.

I think this mother is smart enough not to give up her career to exploit her family on tv. I thought when they interviewed her they don't even tape once a week. Her and her husband are both educated with good paying jobs, they can support their kids without the kids having to work. Is she a bad mother because she worked hard for her career and schooling and wants to be in the work place?? Don't forget Jon & Kate started out begging for money to support their family. All the good will collections at church, neighbors chipping in to pay the electric bill, all the free babysitting, etc.......This family has grandparents to help and thats great. I don't think you can tell from one episode the whole story behind this family!:happytv:

I've watched several episodes. Why would you think I only watched one?

In each one, as the husbands diet failed, as the dad didn't jump up to take care of the kids the mom made more and more remarks. She does a lot of picking on him, but I guess it's ok, since they both work?
So then, I guess it's ok for these kids to be on tv, because their parents both work also? And it's ok for the mom to talk like she does to the dad (and sometimes the dad to the mom), because..um, because....
And it's ok for these kids to be on tv and they aren't being exploited because it's maybe just once a week that they tape? How the heck did they show several days in a row (as she ordered the Holloween outfits and then they were delivered and then they went trick or treating..that was one of the episodes, and only tape once a week? They also had an episode about their addition, again over several days. I don't get the taping once a week.
The grandparents do watch the kids, although they have said the kids were very active for them, and yes, it shows that too.

Masche Fun Facts
• The Masches go through 20 loads of laundry every week (about 3 loads a day).
• The Masches go through 8 gallons of milk every week.
• The Sextuplets change clothing approximately 2-3 times a day.
• Bryan studied approximately 275 hours for the Series 7 exam (55 hours a week for 5 weeks).
• Jenny drove close to 10,000 miles to and from work while the family was living with her parents! [The math: 220 miles each way = 440 round trip. 1-2 trips a week for 18 weeks, or 440 x 18 = 7,920. Add a few more trips, for the times she worked twice a week, and it amounts to approximately 10,000.]
• 25 = Number of shoes the kids have lost since they've been born.
• 105 = Number of diapers the Masches currently go through in a week. That's 3 diapers a day for the 5 kids who aren't potty trained.
• 168 = Number of diapers the Masches currently went through in a week one year ago. That was 4 diapers a day for all 6 kids.
• 3 = Average number of tantrums one Sextuplet goes through in a typical day during their "Terrible 2's" phase. Times that by 6 and Bryan & Jenny are faced with up to 18 tantrums a DAY!
• The Sextuplets have been in 13 states before the age of three: NY, AZ, NM, TX, FL, ID, CA, UT, LA, AL, MS, CO, NV.
• The cross-country road trip used $2,000 worth of gas (one SUV, one van, two moving vans).
• The cross-country road trip took 5 days.
• It took approximately 1 week for the Masches to pack up their home in Arizona.
• It took about 1 month to unpack in Florida.
• Nothing major got broken during the move, however they did lose all of the wiring for their entertainment system, and the glass top for their dining room table.
• The Masches have seen Dr. Debra Mandel (their relationship counselor) for 3 sessions since they've been in Florida. They regularly see a counselor about once a month.
• Bryan & Jenny had 3-4 date nights per week before kids. They had 2 date nights per month for the kids' first year, and in the past year the average went down to about 1 date night a month, because they were separate so much between Arizona and Florida.
