Jon and Kate Plus 8, Official Thread--Part 7

And what would most people here on the DIS say if someone posted, "I still have a mortgage on my old house, I've put it on the market but it hasn't sold yet, would I be foolish to go out and buy a 1.12 million dollar estate at this point in time?" :lmao::lmao::lmao:

not only that, our income potential is unclear. we expect to have a substantial income (some of it might be in cash, do we need to tell the IRS about that?) for a few years, after that ... we're not so sure ... oh. did we mention we have 8 children?

the budget board would have a big time with that! :lmao:

I was watching Entertainment Weekly last nite and Billy the host said something about Kate and Jon wanting to be on tv in some kind of way making a living to support their kids. His co-host, said, "be careful" we are on tv and making a living. Don't shoot the horse that is feeding you.

So for Barbara to comment that the Gosselins should find a different way to support their kids-it's a stupid comment to make, since she and the rest of the women on The View are on tv supporting themselves. The only difference is they are not exploiting their kids on tv.

Same thing on Anderson Cooper last night. They were talking about Balloon Boy and Anderson was sort of critizing the father for wanting to be on TV so bad and Lisa Bloom also said it was funny how so many TV commentators were being so critical of him when they are all making their living on TV.

I think Barbara's comment was more about how J&K were using their kids to provide an income, not Kate trying to break off and do her own thing apart from them. Personally, I could care less if J&K find some kind of media outlet so long as it doesn't feature the kids. Although, truthfully, I can't imagine what either of those 2 could offer in the way of TV. They are both pretty annoying on camera and don't seem to have what it takes to make it on a media platform. I wish they'd just sink out of the limelight and get regular jobs, something they're good at that doesn't involve a camera or tabloid magazine.

The ladies of The View weren't so kind today ... they all agree that children should not be on reality shows, under any circumstances.

And, Barbara Walters just said on The View (specifically of the Gosselins) that if you're gonna have alot of kids, find a better way to support your children.

OT: Elizabeth is back. Yuck. LOL

Too little and too late! What about all the boo-hooing with Kate and I know they said several times that Kate had to support her children with the show. And they go on about how horrible Jon is, but he is the one who stopped the filming of the kids!!

I'm guessing he won't get credit for that, since he did it for the wrong reasons allegedly. Jon has admitted the show hurt his family and Kate would never admit that. No one will ever have to guts to say such things to her face.

It would still be wrong even if there never was a balloon boy. It looks like his is the real whistle-blower however.

Really?? I won't consider watching the view unless Elizabeth IS on!!

add in the elements of "i have'nt worked in my field for several years because childcare costs are prohibitative, and my husband's employment history is spotty at best with a termination and several job changes and quits because i've needed him to help me with the kids at home since IT'S IMPOSSIBLE FOR ONE PERSON TO TAKE CARE OF THESE KIDS ALL BY THEMSELF:sad::sad:, and since he does'nt have a degree in his field and has been out of it for an extended period he's not exactly marketable...":lmao::lmao:

the house purchase has made me think for quite a while that the financial situation kate is presenting is not as it seems. she contends that if the show stops the income stops, but i suspect that as an enticement to continue the show-especialy with a contract provision that prohibits the party from engaging in other forms of financial gain (without employer approval), that even if the show no longer films the gosselins have a guaranteed salary for the life of the initial contract and potentialy through the period in which tlc has the option to utilize them. it might read that the payments stop if the gosselin family chooses to exercise the supposed 'end the show the kids want to stop' option or the show has to be cancelled because of a wrong doing on the gosselin's part-but tlc is'nt saying that's why they are ceasing filming-they continue to contend that it's a hiatus for the good of the family:rolleyes: in which case kate could easily argue the payments should continue (and would'nt tlc look the bad guy if they've been publicly saying 'poor kate, poor kids-we love and support this family and want to help them...' then they use a morals contract clause on 'evil jon' to stop payments to kate/kids whove done nothing to breech it.

it would make sense-when they signed their last contract the show was still extreemly popular, j&k could have easily solicited other networks to pick up the show (or a facsimilie of it under another title) if the contract tlc was offering was'nt lucrative.

so it would be in tlc's best interest to continue the show no matter what a train wreck it becomes because they would have to continue paying for it-so they might as well milk it for all it's worth.

imho it's either this kind of situation that garnered the gosselins (with all the issues that have been posted re. financial ability/history/existing home obligation) the ability to swing that loan OR tlc is some kind of silent co-signer or guarantor to the loan.

they bought that place AFTER the housing market crashed and lending practices started tightening up. they had to provide something that showed they could pay that mortgage/property taxes/insurance, and their existing mortgage along with the basic costs of living for at minimum the 15 years of the life of that loan (the days of lenders figuring they can repo, resell and recoup were already gone by then-esp. with million plus dollar properties). the gosselins claim their monthly expenses are $15,000-and that does'nt take into consideration what they don't have to pay for because tlc covers it. i don't know about anyone else, but when we purchased homes there were formulas that the lender used to figure out the minimum expense we would have for certain things-proving to them in our case that it was less or covered by an employer did'nt fly, they had to use the formulary in the event we lost that benefit or our cost rose to the minimum norm (i went round and round with a lender on this to show we were well below their 'norm' for a family our size but they still had to use the formulary minimum amount). so figure $15,000 minimum per month in expenses times 12 months in a year equals $180,000. i highly doubt any reputable lender looking at their income preceding the show, with a contract that only pays IF the episodes anticipated are filmed, with no guarantee of continued income if the show ends would fathom extending credit to a couple whose pre celeb marketable skills as an rn and a lower level computer tech could in no way provide for that (and that's even if both worked which would change the formulary to have to take childcare for 8:scared1::scared1::scared1: into consideration).

kate whines that if she 'has to' she'll work at macdonalds to support the kids-sorry but if your only source of income has TRULY been cut off, if your ex has robbed the bank account such that you have less than 10% of what you need to pay THIS month's bills (and while you're hoping a judge will order him to put it back you can't be guaranteed he even has anymore or you'll be seeing it anytime soon) you are'nt zipping across the country to whine about it, and you're not putting all your eggs in one basket hoping to get your 'dream job'- you're actualy putting in applications and interviewing at macdonalds or any other place that in this economy is actualy hiring.

Man, this is a tough crowd LOL!

I assume when they bought their house, they thought the other one would sell. I also assume (yep, I know what assume could get me) that they had a contract that was shown when they got the loan, that they would make enough money to make the payments. No job is guarantee'd for 15 years. Many many people lost their houses when their jobs went south. Banks take chances. At the very least, after the down payment, the bank would have a nice house to foreclose on, so they weren't about to lose. Looks like it was a good downpayment, so they must have saved some of their cash for that.

Didn't Kate say that she thought buying the house was one of those things that would make Jon happy? It might have been a mistake, but if, at that time they were looking, she thought it would help the marriage, well, people have done stupider things.

I can't even imagine how much of the money they have now, is going to pay legal fee's.

And at some point, Kate may go back to nursing, when her 15 minutes (or in her case, an hour) is over. But for now, it looks like they are both hopign to stay afloat with TV. Prob isn't going to happen, but I understand the fight they are giving it. They had it all as far as they were concerned, and it's quickly tanking.

As for the 'lies' they both have been caught with. I wonder how much is how they see it (perceive). As someone said..there is her story, his story, TLC's story and the truth. Just like when any couple break up (minus TLC, of course). I've 'heard' people on the Dis talk about the break up of their marriage, and when more comes out, it's not exactly as they portrayed it. They are both dealing with a lot of feelings..neither respected each other during the marriage, and I wouldn't expect they would now, they have a truck load of kids, and there has to be fear, and worry, beyond the smiles and joking with the paps, that we see...from both of them.

I feel sorry for them and the kids, even if they brought it on themselves. I doubt this is what they started out doing. The show was a hit, so something seemed to be right at first. I don't think (well, I know it isn't) this is the first reality show to tank, and I think there will be more. We started out thinking this one was fun, just like Table of 12, The Duggars, Roloff's. Even if Kate hadn't been nasty to Jon, the kids were still being taped, just like the kids in the other shows. Even if a different privacy was shown with K & J..it's still privacy, that is shown with all the shows. I don't know the answers, but as long as we watch them, they will be shown.

The title of Monday night's episode was ''Butterflies and Bottle Rockets,'' which would be a good name for a punk rock band. Kate took Alexis, Hannah, and Leah on a vacation to Florida, and to the wildlife park Butterfly World. One dark-hued butterfly befriended the young girls. ''We should call him Black Velvet,'' said Kate, ''Because he looks like black velvet.'' ''Will he stay with me? Can we keep him?'' asked Alexis. Kate reached out to pet him, but Black Velvet flew away in fear.

Jon was running the asylum back at Casa de Gosselin. ''The little girls are in Florida, so I just have the boys today,'' he said, forgetting his two older daughters. ''We're gonna do destructive man stuff.'' That meant pulling out a fancy new bottle rocket. ''Forget the instructions, we'll look at the picture on the box,'' Jon said. Long minutes passed as one man and five children stared blankly at the picture on the box. Collin asked a perceptive question: ''Do you have the instructions?''

Inside of Butterfly World's bird sanctuary, Kate fed three birds. ''I need eight. I'll feel complete.'' That's pretty funny. Kate-haters, you have to admit that she's at least self-aware enough to poke fun at herself (unlike Emperor Bling Bling, Lord of Manly Earrings). Sure enough, the tour guide placed eight birds on Kate's shoulders. ''I'm telling you, they better not poop on me,'' Kate warned.

Next on the tour was the Bug Zoo, filled with creepy-crawlies and arachnids. The girls were like kids in a candy store. Kate freaked out and fled through the Fire Exit. Then, get this, Alexis followed her out of the Fire Exit, waving around a ginormous Millipede. ''I love how old they're getting, they can torture me,'' said Kate.

The Bug Farmers said they had never seen 5-year-olds get so excited about holding all the bizarre denizens of the Bug Farm. We tend to assume that the Gosselin kids will suffer all kinds of psychological problems because of their role on this show. But what if having to undergo such an intense level of scrutiny at such a young age has actually turned them into battle-hardened super-people? We need to send these kids into space or something.

Jon's Icarus-like quest to send his bottle rocket to the moon hit some stumbling blocks. The first launch only went a few feet in the air. Jon noted sadly, ''Even the paparazzi were like, what the hell is he doing?'' I get your plan, J.G.: you've already lost the kids, but you're trying to win the publicity war by performing elaborate stunts to impress us media vultures. If that's your plan, it's not working.

Up, up and away
Fortunately, the rocket was soon soaring through the air. Satisfied that he had at last conquered the sky, Jon led the kids in a water balloon fight. We didn't get to see too much of the fight, but I assume that Joel cried.

That brings up an important point: this week's episode continued the trend of barely paying attention to the kids. When she took her trio on a hot air balloon ride, Kate gave us a nonstop charm offensive. She told us how hot it was in the balloon, and how hard it was to wake up early, and how silly she was for her choice of footwear. ''I had heels on,'' said our gal. ''It doesn't surprise me, I really only pack heels.''

Tee-hee! That's real cute, Kate! But save it for your talk show! Meantime, the cameras practically didn't notice her three children. I mean, come on! They had to wake up at dawn! They went a billion miles up in the air! In the old days, this would have garnered some fun moments, or a great Alexis line, at least. Instead, the camera paid so much attention to Kate's (fake?) self-deprecation vamping that we didn't even see which of the girls said, loudly, ''It's not fun! At all!''

This isn't just a problem with Kate: Jon's last few segments have basically been him playing with matches while the kids watch in awe. But just because the parents are paying less attention to their kids doesn't mean the show should ignore them, too.

All that said, I thought the end of the episode, with Jon teaching his kids how to swing a baseball bat, was pretty moving. Like all guys, I always cry over the combination of fathers and baseball.

Best sextuplet malapropism: ''Going in an air hot, air hot balloon.''

Worst moment for Kate the scientist: ''Whatever causes the thing to fly, it's hot!'' said Kate, regarding the hot air balloon.

Best moment for Kate the scientist: ''To keep up that many butterflies,'' Kate informed us, ''There has to be this lab, where there's gazillions of chrysalises.'' Another great punk rock band! And perhaps the title of Kate's autobiography?

I'll leave it to you to decide which parent came off worse Monday night. (I realize that Jon never necessarily comes off well, so it's really a question of whether Kate came off bad enough to make Jon look good.) But you have to admit: Butterflies, bottle rockets, balloon fights, balloon* rides and baseball? Those are all pretty fun.

*Yes, I think it's weird that both parents' segments involved some kind of balloon so soon after the brief wondrous life of Balloon Boy, but TLC wouldn't have cobbled this episode together at the last minute to take advantage of that. Would they?

Man, this is a tough crowd LOL!

I've just spent way too much time at the Budget Board... and having a little fun at Jon & Kate's expense.. :rotfl:

I assume when they bought their house, they thought the other one would sell. I also assume (yep, I know what assume could get me) that they had a contract that was shown when they got the loan, that they would make enough money to make the payments. Looks like it was a good downpayment, so they must have saved some of their cash for that.

and you are right about these points. I'm sure when they bought their house, they had every reason to believe that the other home would sell quickly. They continue to lower the price and it hasn't sold. Unfortunately, that's a very common tale these days. They also had every reason to think there would be substantial income coming in over the next few years.

And as long as we're assuming :upsidedow I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the shorter loan term indicates that someone (Jon or/and Kate or their financial planner) realized that much of their income is in the immediate future, making it paid off while they still had money coming in. Smart move, I think.

Are these the things they chose from people filling out their survey, because I didn't choose any of those. I'm not even sure all of those were on the list :confused3

Seems more like they want us to remember good things so we'll look forward to Kate + 8

I've been out there exploring the blogosphere. I must say, the Vanity Fair article did some real damage. Sure, people still don't like Jon (but now he is just referred to as an idiot, not a criminal) but people are coming out of the woodwork to say how much Kate's personality in the article reminded them of what they had seen in the show. The comments about TLC aren't much better -- looks like their timing on the lawsuit didn't help them at all.

And now people are talking about The View -- between that and VF, I'd say Kate is not having a good day.

Same thing on Anderson Cooper last night. They were talking about Balloon Boy and Anderson was sort of critizing the father for wanting to be on TV so bad and Lisa Bloom also said it was funny how so many TV commentators were being so critical of him when they are all making their living on TV.

I think the point that Anderson Cooper and other are trying to make (and you would think that as TV commentators they would have a better grasp of the English lanuage to actually MAKE it) is that it is not so much that it is sad these people are looking to TV to make a living, but that they are putting that desire above all else. The Gosselins desire to be in front of the cameras trumped their childrens privacy and all common sense of decent parents. The Heenes, well his desire trumped staying with in the law, common decency, common sense, suppiorting his family in other ways. Neither of jthese families said "well, lets keep our day jobs and do this as an extra while it lasts" THey threw everything (including thier own families) to the wind to make it happen.

The TLC PR machine is fighting back today ... there have been 2 youtube videos released on Twitter this afternoon. On one of them, this is the caption:

Mady and Cara show the audience how much they love to perform.

I predict we will see outtakes in next week's show ... showing how much the children LOVE the crew and the filming.

Seriously? You can probably count on you hand, the "moments" that Kara "maybe" enjoyed filming. Mady? That would be the day she went with her mom to a spa, and got her mom's undivided attention.

I'm just reporting on what's in my Twitter feed, LOL ... and predicting what I think will happen next week.

TLC has taken a hit this weekend with the connection to the balloon people. even though they turned those people down, there have been many connections made between TLC and that family, and that family and the Gosselins.

TLC has also invested a lot in Kate, they obviously believe she's the key to their continued high ratings. I believe they'll continue to leak this type of behind the scenes footage until Kate's tell-all next week.

I'm sure we are going to get a lot of,
"I'm not discussing this, that, etc."
She was reading pages and turning them over.
We are suppose to believe that she is going to comment
without any coaching, "please" .
