Jon and Kate Plus 8, Official Thread--Part 7

I don't think Amy goes around giving speeches. Kate and Jon speeches were for themselves and about how 'inspiring' their life is and for collecting.

Ummm--yes she does, quite a few times now.

In fact the whole episode a week or two ago about the Trip she couldn't go on that Matt planned without checking the schedule for Spring Break centered around that.

She couldn't go b/c she planned to do a Speech at that time and did that b/c she didn't want to interfere with the kids schedule.

Then Matt went anyway and 2 of the kids stayed home in protest.

So she does give speeches. They did not show this one.

Her first speech (well they said it was her first) was a year or two ago at her alma mater. To prep for it, the episode prior centered around Matt taking her to a Public Speaking Seminar. They showed a few bits of the speech she made.

So yes, she does give speeches. However she was born with her reason to give speeches while Kate gave birth to her reasons to give speeches.

True.

BTW, I felt really bad for the kids on that episode because they felt like they had to choose sides. After watching ever episode of that show, it was probably Matt's fault on that scheduling screw up.

So was Discovery using TLC to use J&K to help them get out of some of the debt that they have?? This could make sense if they were able to sell ad space during the show for much more than other shows. It would also explain why they're holding on so long and taking such an interest in Jon if he's "pulling the plug" on the profit they so desperately need.

Anytime a business gets a moneymaker of any kind--it behooves them to try and retire what debt they can with that.

Repayment of debt comes out of profits--so if they have major success with something, it is in their shareholders interest to improve the position of the company's balance sheet.

Does that mean they were doing something sinister by producing Jon and Kate at the magnitude they did in response to ratings?

Absolutely not.

In fact it would have been irresponsible of them from to abandon a success and would have not fit their corporate mission at all.

Now we can go into the ethics of the kids--but it has not been determined that there was anything wrong with what they did and the family was on board the entire time and were paid handsomly (though not individually).

This would be like Coke ignoring customer response to regular coke (as they did) when they came out with New Coke then ignoring that New Coke sucked and most of their client base hated it and thus they developed Coca Cola Classic aka the old coke.

We (general) tend to forget that the media is a business just like your local grocery store, your power company and the well known Proctor and Gamble and Coke.

When they are publicly traded companies, they have a responsibility to their share holders.

AT anytime a company can push another product/tv show--but you don't stop what has been on fire if you are able to keep it going.

Matt and Amy Roloff have remained adament that they have the final say in how much is filmed, and what makes it to the final edit. I think Jon and Kate had say so too, they just like to blame TLC. Who would sell their soul with eight kids to protect? The Roloffs don't do publicity much at all, and I don't think they have any reason to start. They have been on now for years. Since the twins were about 14 I think, and they are 19 right? They seem to have used the show to further awareness about dwarfism, adoption of little people, lpa, etc. She is doing some speaking now. She says she trys to keep it to one trip per month or less. I also read they have filmed about 1/2 of the episodes J&K have even though they have been around a good bit longer. I still like them so much. She is just a very cool mom to me. They have handled things like Matt's drunk driving arrest and the loss of their best family friend Mike with class imo. She never announces they have a lot of faith, she just prays. She doesn't announce that "what you see is the real thing", they just live. Sometimes they have fought to the point of me being uncomfortable watching. Their relationships with friends and family have always made them seem so real to me. But, "reality TV" is indeed an oxy moron!

+1

Good assessment.

Just so I'm not misunderstood, I'm not saying that LPBW is real by any stretch of the imagination. I know that pretty much all reality shows on TLC since their reality era began are staged in many aspects. I was moreso alluding to how J&K seemed to be more staged. Is it J&K's fault? I don't know, maybe TLC was using them as the test case of how to "influence" what occurs on their reality shows.

I get it, just those other shows are growing increasingly staged. (heck, table for 12 is just going straight to some staged ops.)

Anyone care to share any tips with me that I would have gotten from Kate's cookbook had it come out on time? :goodvibes I need to make dinner for my boys at work - something VERY easy that I could just throw in the oven or crockpot and forget and go back to my desk as we're having a very well known speaker come in that day to the station - to thank them for letting my little one come and play on the fire trucks next week for his birthday (or the guys are bringing the fire truck to the house...haven't decided yet!). It's doesn't have to be organic like Kate (I'm trying hard to follow the new "rules" and keep it on topic! :upsidedow), just something a group of about 12 firefighter would like to eat that's not going to make me go broke feeding them. I still have to pay for the birthday party the next day!

Kate?? Is that you??

:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

PS. for those who might not get the joke, Kate often answers questions to questions and then answers that question. LOL.

Thanks for the explanation, b/c I was like...huh?:lmao:

you don't watch much of the show or other interviews?

it really is sort of fascinating to watch (at first ;) ) The interviewer will ask a question, and Kate will answer that question. She'll further expand on the answer by continuing to ask herself questions, quite often starting off using the word absolutely. LOL

When I read your explanation, I got it--but without it I was like--I had no idea what you were talking about.

Got it though with the explanation and read my post in Kate-voice.:rotfl: Complete with rolling head bob so that my head looked like it was saying no with my not.

Anyone care to share any tips with me that I would have gotten from Kate's cookbook had it come out on time? :goodvibes

Contrary to Kate's most recent statement that it will be out "early next year" - don't hold your breath waiting for it - it's still on hold "indefinitely".. And I believe the recipes are not original either.. Just stuff she googled like anyone else can..:goodvibes

In fairness, recipes are not copyrighted and there are many cookbooks on the market with unoriginal recipes. However, sometimes people make their own and sometimes they don't. Nothing wrong with that.:goodvibes

Most everything nowadays has its roots in some other dish somewhere. Tweek an ingredient here or there and voila, original unoriginality.

Try www.recipezaar.com

It has reviews for most of the recipes and more variety than you will find in any cookbook.

Umm.. Yes - many, many recipes are copyrighted - depending on the source.. A book; a web site with copyrighted original recipes; recipes that are published in a compilation; original recipes that contain the originators names; etc.. Of course you can use them (create your own cookbook to sell) "if" you contact each source for each recipe and get written permission.. Otherwise you have to make 3 "major" changes to the recipes (ingredients) - as well as reword the instructions.. How do I know? I had to do the research for an organization that was publishing a cookbook for sale to the general public..:goodvibes

A number of years ago there was a big fuss about "stealing" recipes and publishing them as ones own and there are much stricter guidelines that must be followed now..

Well, I have the printed information I was required to obtain - as well as a very recent book regarding what the law requires in order for you to publish a cookbook for "sale" using "others" recipes, but unfortunately it's not here at the lake - it's at my DD's..

As has been said many times here on the DIS, you can find many different answers to the same questions on the internet.. Weren't you just trying to explain something about cats here recently - with internet links to back it up - that was strongly disputed by someone else? Same sort of scenario.. For now we'll just have to agree to disagree.. I'm sure the J&K thread will still be going (hopefully) when I return to my DD's and I'll share that info with you then if the subject of "Kate's" cookbook comes up again..:goodvibes

It likely won't though - as I think that's another "dead project" - at least according to the correspondence I've received from the publishing house..
Time for her to start really pushing for that "talk" show..:thumbsup2
