Joining a boarding group question

This may have been covered already but if you arrive and get a later boarding group can you leave the park for a dinning reservation in another park or back to your hotel to relax. Or do you have to stay in the park to keep your boarding group?

You can leave.

Thank you guys so much, with it opening at 6am, I was hoping that we would be able to get a break during the day

I am here now, and was able to ride yesterday, Friday.
I got to the park for the “9am” opening, only to find out they opened at 6am. I attempted to join the queue from the bus, the lot, bag check and was unable. The Join Boarding Group button only activated AFTER I tapped in at 7:30am. I was boarding group 77, which was called at 5:30 pm. We were off the ride by 6:20. I know today so many more people knew about the queue and the earlier opening times. I suspect it will only be more difficult. Disney texted about a 6am opening tomorrow morning as well. Good luck to everyone! It really was AMAZING!

I'm not an expert, but I have some limited knowledge about this topic. I'm in Orlando now, and I was able to do ROTR yesterday (and it was great fun) and my conclusion is that Disney is using a technique called "geofencing". The simplest way I can explain it is to say that Disney can detect when you are actually in the park or almost in the park by seeing which cell towers your phone is connecting to as well as your current IP address. It's not tied to your Magic Band or your ticket.

The best example of this is how New Jersey has online gambling, but only for people who are physically in New Jersey. That's how they do it, and it seems to be very effective.

Here's a link to a story in Esquire magazine that has a little more depth on the topic.

If you don't have a cell phone they may have other options for you when you're in the park, but let's face it, 98% of visitors to Disney World have cell phones.

You have to be close to DHS but not necessarily tapped into the park. Also if you are traveling with a group of people, EVERYONE has to be near the park in order to be added to your boarding pass party in MDE.

Does everyone immediately begin trying to get a boarding pass? Unless they are planning to avoid the ride, yes :)

Reports today were that all boarding passes were booked by 8am, and that was WITHOUT advanced notice of the virtual queue being used. I wouldn't be surprised if the next few days book even eariler, as word spreads that guests should be checking for the VQ.
Sorry if this is clear to everyone else but it’s actually the magic bands that need to be near DHS, right? If I wanted to get up at 5:00 am and take everyone’s MBs with me over to DHS, I could get everyone in a boarding group.

No.

Disney tweaked and each person wishing to attempt to join a BG MUST BE in the park.

Trying to follow this thread but its too busy, lol. We'll be there in Feb. and don't have a cell phone. Can we still do ROTR?

Once boarding pass group is called...how long is the window of availability? I though I had read 4 hrs....trying hard to force the kids up early tmwr morning

It is two hours. While YMMV, guests have reported some leniency in the case of ADR or other material conflicts.

Yes. After you're in the park, just approach someone from Guest Experience and they will give you a boarding group. They should be easy to find. Wearing black and carrying a little tablet.

To join a boarding group do you have to select everyone on your account or can it be just those that are in the park at the time?

Anybody use the boarding pass for RR yet ? Do you have to wait till the day of your visit to book it ? How does it work?

Let's say you got a boarding group in the 30's, but you wanted to press your luck and try to get a later BG to mesh better with evening plans, are you able to cancel your assigned BG and then try to grab another one? Or are you stuck with whatever the first BG you are assigned?
