Join a gym or take walks

Ohhhh it's that time of year where it's 90 + degrees outside and yet again I've regained the weight I lost. I'm contemplating joining a gym so I can get out and meet more people. Of course I could take a walk around the neighborhood BUT just don't think I get a lot of interaction with that.

Anybody have any thoughts? :confused3

I think the gym is an important part of fitness. A lot of people look at only cardio (whether it be running, walking, biking, or a class) when trying to lose weight but resistance training is just as important so I'd join the gym.

I was VERY reluctant to join a gym. In January, I decided I really had to do something. I tried out a few local gyms (most give out a pass for a free week). I found one I love and am so glad I did this! The trainers are so supportive and I have met alot of people in a similar situation as my self. My advice would be to try out a few gyms and see if any of them "fit".

I agree w/ FireDancer. I didn't join a gym until this summer, b/c I realized that I couldn't be a successful runner on just running alone (how ironic does that sound?!?) - this is b/c I desperately needed to work on flexibility and strength training.

I usually hate gyms, but I was at the point where I was willing to put my biases aside to make this work. I do actually like my gym, b/c there are tons of different classes to take like Athletic Conditioning, Yoga, Pilates, Strength Training, vs. just having cardio machines and free weights.

I used to be a gym rat, and now as a result I haaaaaaaaate the gym! I think I spent too much time there. Lately I have joined a local running club, which helps you meet people and shames you into finishing that last half a mile! Oh and it's also free. I keep weights at home for strength training and go to a yoga class twice a week. I've met a lot more people there than I ever did at the gym, but I always kept my head phones in, so your mileage may vary.

Now for the middle of the road ....

First, I support the need for a gym specifically for the coaching aspect one gets. Most folks who yo yo on weight loss are not taking a holistic approach concerning fitness & nutrition. It takes matching the correct Kcal in with the Kcal burned. Balancing the ins so that one does not feel hungry but more importantly to supply the needed nutrients for life. The outs are a combination of body strength and cardio. You must do both to keep everything level.

As previously posted, look at several gyms. It is not exclusively a cost issue but one where you feel welcomed and appreciated. It should be within you daily sphere of life....i.e. if working on the way home or to work so it is convenient to use. Work a deal if you decide on one that includes 3-5 sessions with a trainer... a trainer that you can select once you get to know them. Gyms can be a social outlet, but use common courtesy while on the floor and don't be too social. Classes and other activities offered by gyms are a good way to meet others.

I am like Ms. Toad.... I was a trainer, cycle class instructor, running class instructor, endurance coach and overall gym rat all on top of my real job and life.I quit the gym in 09 and have a personal gym in my house where I now workout, run with one of my old groups and avoid the gym like a plague. I am thinking of joining a new one that is a nice little 5k run from the house, but the thought of making payments bothers. me. (one benefit of working at a gym is no dues).

While I have a personal place in my house, I and I bet Ms Toad would caution a newbie on going to a fitness store out of the blue. No fitness equipment at the house will help with fitness if it stays unused. You would be surprised at how many treadmills turn into expensive clothes hangers. My gym is relatively inexpensive. I have Power Blocks & a bench for weight, a treadmill for running, a trainer that I put my outdoor bike on for cross training and a TRX system for instability work.

Good luck in your decision. Sounds like a gym may help bring your motivation levels up. Do try to get a deal on training before signing up so that you have help understanding the bscis of what you need to do.
