I'm not sure if this is more appropriate here or on the debate board. Johnny Depp's interview appeared in USA Weekend today, ostensibly to promote Pirates of the Caribbean, opening next week. He spoke eloquently of the joys of fatherhood, and then spent some time talking about the US's anti-France sentiment. I think his comments were mild (at least compared to some others), but they might be political enough to create a furor. He spoke of the "freedom fries" renaming, "it was tragic and embarrassing. At the same time, I was happy it was exposed, and people knew that a bunch of congressmen - big people, the upper-drawer people, made that decision". He goes on to say that the real reason America went to war in Iraq is economic "What's it really all about? It's about dough; it's about money. That's ugly."
I firmly believe in freedom of speech and Depp's right to say whatever he thinks. However, the timing of this interview is to promote a movie that he was paid millions of dollars to make. I wonder how Disney likes this one? Future film contracts may include a ban on political statements for a certain amount of time during the movie's release, with a penalty of salary forfeiture!
Edited to say that the last statement is purely an opinion, not a fact!
