Johnny Depp Interview in USA Weekend

I'm not sure if this is more appropriate here or on the debate board. Johnny Depp's interview appeared in USA Weekend today, ostensibly to promote Pirates of the Caribbean, opening next week. He spoke eloquently of the joys of fatherhood, and then spent some time talking about the US's anti-France sentiment. I think his comments were mild (at least compared to some others), but they might be political enough to create a furor. He spoke of the "freedom fries" renaming, "it was tragic and embarrassing. At the same time, I was happy it was exposed, and people knew that a bunch of congressmen - big people, the upper-drawer people, made that decision". He goes on to say that the real reason America went to war in Iraq is economic "What's it really all about? It's about dough; it's about money. That's ugly."

I firmly believe in freedom of speech and Depp's right to say whatever he thinks. However, the timing of this interview is to promote a movie that he was paid millions of dollars to make. I wonder how Disney likes this one? Future film contracts may include a ban on political statements for a certain amount of time during the movie's release, with a penalty of salary forfeiture!

Edited to say that the last statement is purely an opinion, not a fact!

MMMMM...
I am not sure what to think of this. He is entitled to his opinion.
I understand the interview was to focus on Pirates, so why did the interviewer stray off the subject?

Everyone has an opinion, unfortunately, we are exposed to "movie stars" opinions more than anyone elses.

Johnny prob. should not have discussed how he felt about the war. JMHO.

I have a 17 y.o.DD who can't wait to see the movie, no matter what he has said about the war.

In Miramar Fl. I believe, and has sinced moved to France with his Wife and Kids....he likes the "lifestyle" of the french!

I see nothing wrong with what he said. I thought renaming french fries as freedom fries was an embarassment too. It seemed so childish.

I also think that since the war is more or less over we should be more open to all opinions. It got a little scary during the height of the war when everyone was so quick to bash anyone who was the least bit critical of our government.

i love the johnny! this is why he is so awesome! he's not like the rest of the mindless celebrities...he has strong opinions and doesnt care if the public likes him or not. Their are times when he thinks he'll never get another role...and he's totally fine..but then another job rolls around. He only takes roles he likes..not just any big role to come around...yeah, and he lives in france, so his kids wont have to grow up around the paparazzi...which is sweet. Yeah, im a biiiggg depp fan.

He's certainly entitled to his opinion and it won't keep me from seeing the movie. I'm looking forward to it big time in fact and Johnny Depp being in it just makes it better IMO.

I do wonder about him moving to France to avoid the papparazzi though. I keep thinking about what happened to Princess Diana and that makes me wonder if the situation is any better in France.
