Listening to Sixteen Tons.
Who else likes the man in black. He just never stopped being cool, and this from somebody who can never ever listen to country music.

LOL! I love Johnny Cash too. :) :) :) His daughter was on the radio last night, talking about her father and the impact her step mother, June Carter Cash, had on her as a young girl. Way cool...there is just something fascinating about this man, and his family. :-)

"I fell into a burning ring of fire....."

I agree, an interesting man. :)

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

I like Johnny Cash too and had the pleasure of seeing him in concert in the early 90's.

But when I hear Sixteen Tons, I think of Tennessee Ernie Ford!

I agree Alabamaalan! :) My parents played 16 Tons by T.E. Ford a lot when I was growing up, and I still like it! I know all the words...shall I start singing it....;) :)

Yes? Okay...here goes...;)

Sixteen Tons
Tennessee Ernie Ford

Written in 1947 by Merle Travis

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake* by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't a-get you, then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

You forgot the "Weeeeeelllllll...." at the beginning :p

Cash and Ford (Sounds like a car dealership for bad credit) both have wonderful voices.

Me, too! My kids (ages 4 and 6) love that recording. :D

Anybody like his cover of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt"? I thought he did an excellent job, except he consored himself about the crown part...

I absolutely LOVE Johnny Cash and met him ages ago in Atlantic City's Steel Pier. He was so sweet to me. I was a teenager back in the early 60's and he talked to me while giving me his autograph several times. LOL I have all of his albums.

Just heard Ring of Fire on CMT's Top 100 show. He is truly a legend. That deep voice of his can never be mistaken for anyone else's.

I stalked Johnny Cash! An old boyfriend was so
enamoured that we went to Nashville and hung
around the end of the lane that led to his ranch
until we finally saw him. We yelled,"Hey John!" until
he paid attention to us and had a very nice
conversation with him. What a great guy! That was
in the 70's. Great memory. I was afraid to read this
thread since all you hear about him lately is how sick
he is.
