John Denver

While reading all the posts, I got stuck at this one and could not get past it. I was scanning through my mushy brain trying to remember John Denver having a drinking problem. He always came across as more of a "pot aficionado" to me. :3dglasses

He was thinking of Glen Campbell, like he said later in the thread.

I love John Denver! His concert was one of the best I've ever been, too, and also it helped my mother and I with our then rocky relationship.

I love so many of his songs, I couldn't pick a favorite.

Used to listen to my folks' John Denver Greatest Hits record a good bit as a kid. Love Poems, Prayers and Promises.

<font color=navy>I'm another John Denver fan. I remember going to one of his concerts in '77, I think.

Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains
Shenandoah River -
Life is old there
Older than the trees
Younger than the mountains
Growin’ like a breeze

Country Roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

All my memories gathered ‘round her
Miner’s lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine
Teardrops in my eye

Country Roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice
In the mornin’ hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And drivin’ down the road I get a feelin’
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

Country Roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

Country Roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads
Take me home, now country roads
Take me home, now country roads

I love a lot of his lesser known songs even better than his most popular ones....like "The Flower That Shattered The Stone"

Hmmmmmmm...... I have alot of memories about John Denver but one question comes to mind "whatever happened to all that gas?!" :smooth:

I first saw John Denver in concert at age 13 at Madison Square Garden. My friends and I got to go in to NYC ( with an adult Chaperone of course) and we had a blast. It was our first concert for all of us. My sister and I then proceeded to see every single one of his concerts that we could possibly afford/get to in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area. He sang many concerts at a small intimate theater in the round here in NY called Westbury Music Fair that was like listening to him sing to you in your living room.

Not only was he a fantastic singer, he was a brilliant songwriter and I share the feeling of a previous poster about his lesser known and later music. "What Are we Making Weapons For?" and " Flying For Me" come to mind immediately, but there were so many more.

I had the good fortune to spend a few summers in Aspen just before he died. When he was home he would often come into town to get a muffin at one of the great bakeries in town and just listen to the classical music being played in front by the students of the Aspen music school. I know people sitting on the benches listening recognized him, but nobody made a fuss.

I also had the opportunity to meet him just before he died. I was coming home from Aspen and he was going to Aspen and I saw him standing with his Mother and his youngest daughter waiting for an elevator. I went over and said hello and that I admired his music. We shook hands, the elevator came and he left. About a month later he died.

The world lost a great person, a fantastic singer and humanitarian
when it lost John Denver. I am so glad to hear that young children are still being introduced to his music.

I like John Denver. About a month before he died he was doing a concert outside of Baltimore. DH and I were at an Orioles game the day of the concert and John was there as well. He got on top of the dugout and sang during the 7th inning stretch. It was neat to see him but took on new meaning when he died so soon after that.

Thats funny, because I always associate John Denver with the Orioles. I grew up literally blocks from Memorial Stadium, so we were always there at the games. They always played Thank God I'm A Country Boy during 7th inning stretch, always. For many years. They might still do it at Camden Yards for all I know. It was sort of an odd song to sing in Baltimore City, as far away from the country as one could possibly be, but a fun one just the same.

Oh, and to answer the original question, yes, I liked John Denver's music -- he was a gifted singer and songwriter.

I was in Denver, CO recently and the singing of the line "Rocky Mountain High, Colorado" kept running through my mind over and over:o

More John Denver fans here. DW and I both were fortunate to see him twice in concert. 1st time he did a Christmas show in Chapel Hill at the Dean Dome. That was great! He did all his standards in the 1st set. Then he came back and did all Christmas songs with trees and trimmings adorning the stage. This was in the early 90's.

We saw him again at Walnut Creek ampitheatre in Raleigh. We had 2nd row seats. I remember him making a comment on what a nice venue it was and how he enjoyed playing outside.
He died a few months after this show. We still love to listen to his music.

I am old enough to remember when Country Roads was a huge hit on the radio. I had a music teacher in Elementary school in those days who MADE us sing his songs. It was later in life before I truly appreciated his music.

I really liked John Denver too. I can remember going to sleep to one of his albums every night the summer I was about 13 or so.

My nearly 11 year old DS is a big John Denver fan. I think he has 3 or 4 of his CDs.

Whenever we're sitting around a campfire or on a hayride, if I can't think of anything else to sing, I'll start a John Denver song, and it just gets things rolling in my mind.

Okay....Now I'm curious as to who else likes/liked John Denver b/c of the thread about who you'd go back in time to see.

Love John Denver. Saw him at Redrocks a few times. Worked with a woman in Denver that lived next door to his parents for a while and I actually got to meet him in the late 70's (at least I think it was the 70's....hard to remember). Ah....Take Me Home......... ;)

Huge John Denver fan here. One of the only "stars" that I ever cried when he died. I love his music.

Hey thanks for the link now I can have him at work.

I like John Denver, listening to "Sunshine on My Shoulders" right now. Very pretty song.

After every home victory by the WVU Mountaineers football team, the team gathers in front of the student section in the end zone, and Country Roads is played over the stadium sound system while everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) sings along.

After a big win, this can be about the coolest thing you'll ever see ::yes::

Snoopy,

Yup, they still sing that today. I was really neat to see/hear John Denver sing it live.

I am a John Denver fan, my parents use to listen to him when I was young. I have a few of his CD's.

DH and I are huge fams of John Denver's music. We always bring his CD sets for our drive to Cape May from Ohio. We saw him in concert a few times, including at the Fraze Pavillion in Kettering.

We passed along our love of his music to our sons, they each enjoy his CD's as well.

I have all of his record albums and enjoy them at home the old fashion way, on my record player as well.
