Hi All,

This might be a silly question, but can anyone tell me if there is a place to jog while on the ship? I am not looking on disturbing anyone and it would probably be early in the am? Has anyone done this before and if so where would be the best place if it is allowed?

TIA

Deck 4 is a continuous loop on all ships. On the Magic and the Wonder, they may periodically close the forward area during docking. But you can cut through the forward most doors. It is recommended to not rely on GPS for your on deck run, since the ship is moving it will not record your pace or distance correctly. If you do not feel like running outside the Senses Spa and fitness center has free treadmills available for use as well. In addition, if your ship stops at Castaway cay, you can partake in the Castaway Cay 5k, visit guest services to sign up. There are multiple threads on the subject if you need more information. Happy running.

Thank you so very much!! I really appreciate this :)

I recommend going in the morning. Any later and there's simply too much foot traffic you have to dodge. I ran last year on the Magic on a sea day, which was my first time running on a ship (I didn't run on our first cruise on the Dream) and it was WIERD. I packed it in after 3 miles (9 laps) because I couldn't handle running against the movement of the ship. Running the same direction the ship was moving was fine, but running aft was totally bizarre.

Just a quick note for scheduling your runs: Smoking is allowed on deck 4, port side from 6PM - 6AM. Just in case you don't wanna run through clouds of smoke, should they be present.

I can count the number of times I've seen smokers outside on Deck 4 any time that the bars aren't open to adults only on one hand. I can actually count them on two fingers. It's just not a popular place to stand and smoke. Most people go up to Meridian since there's actually a place to sit down.

That is your experience. We have actually seen smokers on deck 4 more than that. Plus not all the ships have Meridian.

You can also use the treadmills in the gym. I found i could not run on the treadmills..it made me dizzy. Deck 4 wasn't too bad, but 4 out of 7 mornings were way too windy. I didn't even know smoking was allowed on Deck 4; never seem it either...

Another "hazard" are the shuffleboard areas on deck 4. Kids running around wildly swinging those long poles oblivious to folks walking--or jogging--by. Most have no thought as to keeping score--just hitting the plastic discs as hard and as far as possible.

Are they generally out that early in the morning?

We were just on the January 16th Fantasy, and mornings 6-7 were very quiet. I was either alone or just saw a couple of other people that early. I'd say after 8am it got busier. Lots of morning walkers that I didn't want to try dodging.

And the person who mentioned the GPS was correct. I tried mine once and it reported I was running 3 minute miles (in my dreams). It's surprisingly tough to keep track of laps in my head.

Run as early in the morning as you can. The later it gets the more kids and walkers you will find on 4. I typically like to be done with my run before 7-7:30. I was training for a marathon last year and actually did a 12 mile run on deck 4 of the Wonder on a sea day. By the 30th lap the maintenance guys working in the front of the ship would cheer for me each time that I passed them. Make sure that you run counter-clockwise and watch out for wet spots.

One quick note, on sea days your running watch, if you have one, will be useless in tracking pace and distance (an obvious observation, but I know many who have been confused about this), so I turn my GPS signal off on the watch and hit the lap button each time I pass a certain location. This helps me keep track of the number of laps that I do and the ultimate distance, based upon which ship.

I don't try to remember how many laps running on a cruise deck, instead I run for a set length of time. I know pretty much know how long it takes for me to run 4, 5 or six miles. I figure that even if my runs are a bit shorter, I'm happy just to be getting a run in on vacation.

You never know. Usually busier later on--but folks know that so some come early and try to beat the crowd--I think there are only 3 such shuffleboard areas on deck 4(?)

I also found the treadmill to be dizzying, but also fantastic (at the same time?). I REALLY enjoyed the Castaway Cay 5K--it felt nice to be running on solid ground after my few runs on the treadmills and also through a beautiful tropical island :)

I ran every morning of our last 2 cruises (mexico and carribean), saw the sun come up every morning. It was awesome! I plan to do the same for Alaska if I can stand the cold. I eat so much, I have to burn some calories!

On the first day of our first cruise I tried the gym. It was completely packed!
