Jogging & Lung Pain?

I began exercising in December 3-4x a week. Use to exercise using the Treadclimber until my gym decided they had enough of the repair bills, and they took them out :sad1:

Now I'm using a treadmill and the elliptical. The problem that I'm having is trying to jog. Whenever I try, the pain when I breathe is unbearable. Each breath in and out gives me a terrible sharp pain in my lungs.

This pain does not happen on the elliptical or doing a fast walk on the treadmill. Only while jogging...no matter how slow, no matter how much I have warmed up.

Is this normal or something that will go away? Am I doing something wrong?

Can't think of why this happens only while jogging if you can do the other aerobics w/o this result.

Might be one for your doc.

This happens to me too. Not necessarily a sharp pain. But very uncomfortable. I just assumed it was because I'm not meant to run!!! I do still try. I just do shorter bursts. And I try to focus on taking really deep breaths in and out. I find that helps. Kudos to you for still working at it.

I'm not having pain but it seems to be very difficult for me to breathe while running. I used to run with no breathing problem so I'm guessing it is because I am older (and a bit heavier too LOL). I haven't given up though and have been running then walking then running then walking. I am looking to build myself back up but I guess it will take some time.

Thanks for the responses everybody. I was not sure if the pain was normal, since I can't really ask the person on the treadmill next to me, "Does it hurt to breath when you run?" :)

I'm not a smoker, but I'm still quite heavy. Maybe I just need to get in better shape.... :confused3

You might want to ask your doctor about it. I still have a lot of weight to lose and am not having any pain so it could be the sign of something serious going on....perhaps a stress test would rule out any significant issues.

It could also be exercise induced asthma. A simple puff of an inhaler will make it go away, but a doc needs to prescribe one.

I used to have this too, so I never seriously tried running. In the last year I've really been working out like a crazy woman (1 - 1 1/2 hours a day of exercise 5-6 days a week, usually an hour on the elliptical) and now I can suddenly run. :confused3 I think maybe I just had to get my endurance up or something? I've recently been running 3 miles every other day, and usually it's my legs that get tired, not my lungs. I did just turn 30 too, maybe it's a :wizard: age?
