Jock straps on their faces halftime show lol

Not as famous? Maybe to you.
Oh, he’s plenty famous to me. I’ve already mentioned that he’s a big deal around here and I think he’s very talented. :confused3

But the truth is, it seems he’s just not as well known in The States. Plenty of Canadian artists who are considered famous and have big hits just aren’t as well known in the States. It’s just the way it is.

I thought the jock straps where actually plastic surgery recovery bandages.

Everyone in my family immediately recognized the "masks" as plastic surgery bandages. I also thought having the masked performers appear right when he was singing "I can't feel my face" made that connection even more clear for anyone who wasn't familiar with what the bandages look like.

I thought it was a clever way to incorporate masks into the performance. Never entered my mind that others would think they were jock straps or underwear.

I Youtubed the show just now as I wasn't watching the Superbowl last night.

Never had heard of them but to be honest I listen to mostly country now. To be respectful of my Canadian DISers; the show was interesting but won't be in my Top Ten.

That's fair. The Weeknd played a concert but there wasn't much spectacle to really wow people.

In the past some groups - Prince and U2 come to mind - have just played music and it was excellent. Perhaps because it was Prince and U2. And I appreciate that The Weeknd's performance harkened back to those concerts, as a full blown spectacle might be a bit much considering the pandemic and all. But still, I think a little more glitz would have served him well.

I thought it was a decent performance -- not the best halftime show I've seen, but not the worst either. (I know several of the Weeknd's songs and don't mind them, but I wouldn't call myself a "fan.")

I did appreciate that he performed his songs. I prefer that to the shows where they have so many "guest stars" that each one gets less than 2 minutes and tries to incorporate a costume change into that time as well. At least this one felt relatively cohesive.

Wasn't a fan of the masks though. Didn't recognize them for what they were (I knew they weren't ACTUALLY underwear but they reminded me of underwear) and they seemed kind of creepy.

I like The Weeknd's music. If he comes on the radio I am not switching the station. That said ...

The show was a bit lackluster to me. One of the songs I like, "Can't Fell My Face," was ruined by the jockstraps and the camera angles. Now that someone pointed out the reasoning behind the jockstrap look I appreciate it. But it still looked like jockstraps. Sorry. Jockstrap was the first word I said to my husband when the dancers came out.

Was it the worst halftime? No. Just a tad boring. The worst for me is still Maroon 5. Wowsa, that was bad, and I like that group as well. And then Beyonce back 2013. A lot of people loved that performance, I didn't. I thought Beyonce was beyoring. (Yeah I made that quip on Facebook back then, and it came up on my Memory news feed today. Gave me a chuckle.)
I swear you and I must have been separated at birth. LOL. I recognized his name, but couldn't tell you what songs he does (I'm bad at matching artists & songs). I recognized the songs when he started singing.

That being said, I agree the show was "meh" to me. The production elements were kind of impressive, but they didn't really "blend" or add to the show IMO. It was like they were there just to be there. I mentally tuned out after about 5 minutes.

I like high energy shows/music for halftime. Whether that's rock (preferred), country, metal, whatever. Last night just wasn't it.

I did the dishes during halftime per my usual. Can’t say I have ever regretted that use of time.

I never thought they were literal jockstraps, but when I first saw them that’s instantly what I thought of. Not for one second believed The Weeknd said he wanted his dancers with jock straps on their heads, but that’s definitely what they looked like to me.

As I don’t watch music award shows, I had not seen him fashion the plastic surgery bandages. Definitely appreciate his meaning behind it. Very true that a lot of youth in our world idolize Hollywood and unattainable images on Instagram. One more reason for me to like him! 👍🏻

He’s popular around here. He’s always on the radio. We all knew who he was. My 14 year old was really excited for the show. I thought it was good. I understood the bandages.

Not a fan of the singer, but I thought the show was the best live concert I've seen...since last March.

I thought it was good up until he went into the tunnel with the jockstrap guys - then I lost interest. Apparently Miley Cyrus made an appearance too? yeah, missed that.

Exactly what I said to my family. I watch for the music. Flying thru the sky or strange costumes don’t appeal to me.

Well the great news is that some years it’s more about the music and some years it’s more about the spectacle. Sometimes it’s an older artist sometimes it’s a newer artist. It’s wonderful that it’s not the same old thing every year.
