job for felons

Have him try the restaurant biz. You can start off in the kitchen without much experiance. Plus, restaurants tend to hire from within for managment, so he could work his way up to a decent job with benefits.

He has been looking at many places. The construction business is terrible here so he can't get a job doing that. His parole officer told him that there are no jobs out there. He did get a job cleaning rugs but then the place did a background check and found out he was a felon and he lost the job. It seems a little unfair that people don't want to give young people a chance. He did all of these things when he was 18, so he was charged as an adult not a juvenile. He did the crimes, drugs and time before he was 21. He is just turning 21 now. It just seems that the system is set up to make them become repeat offenders. Thanks again for everyone's advice.

I was wondering... what about trucking companies?
It seems some discount stores like Big Lots, Garden Ridge, WalMart, SAM's... will hire people with a record.

Also... ask him who he is using for current references... sometimes having a minister, lawyers, local business people that will give him a good reference will help in his job search.
Best wishes!

jmho...
I believe that non-violent crimes should have a process to be wiped off a record if there is not a history of continuous crimes- Especially for kids who did something stupid before they turned 21 and have been able to maintain a clean record.

Dh works for biglots at a distribution center and he said they DO hire felons as long as you do NOT lie on your application. I am not sure about the store's Good Luck to him!

My brother is a felon a few times over and has been very successful finding employment in the trades. He builds houses these days but has also worked in sheetrocking and carpentry. He has been out for almost 4 years now, and has maintained the same job just as long. He works for a small company. They treat him well and looked past his record. Hopefully your nephew will find somewhere the same..

It's tough. I think that's why there are so many reoffenders...people get out of prison, nothing is available for them as an opportunity to work, drive, live....so they re-offend because it was easier on the inside..

I work for the department of rehabilitative services in my state. In a nutshell, I help people with disabilities get back to work. My particular caseload is substance abuse. Everyone on my caseload has to have a SA disability (they almost always have other disabilities as well) and be in or have completed a treatment program. Also about 95% of my clients also have felonies.

Here is a link for the CT voc rehab dept. It should give you the info you need. Contact them, they are there to help. Good luck! http://www.brs.state.ct.us/programs.htm#What is the Vocational Rehabilitation Program?

Well at least he is trying to get his life together and that is great, I wish him the best of luck.

Restaurants might work out best for him. I befriended a server at a local chain restaurant and after about a month or so he told me about his background. He had a bad family and got into drugs and did wind up in jail for 5 years. He has been clean and sober now for 4 years and doing great. He has his own apartment and is saving up for a car. He works really really hard. I give me alot of credit and some of my friends were upset that I was friends with him because of his past and I felt that he is trying to get his life back together and he deserves a second chance. He proved to be a better friend then some that I had for years.

I don't know if they have "fixed living" where he is, but his probation officer should also be able to assist him in finding residence and also work.

I truly wish him the best, tell him to have faith it will all work out :flower3:
