I may have the chance to switch jobs in the next few weeks but am still trying to weigh up the pros and cons of sticking with the current one

I've been working part-time in local government for the past 14 years, starting with just a few hours and increasing to roughly half-time. I more or less fell into the job initially (right place, right time, etc.) and the job suited me very well in the early years as it was very convenient for childcare / home committments, and it's been great that I've managed to increase my hours a little as those committments have changed. However, it's not something I actively want to continue doing until I retire, although I wouldn't hate it. I am curently on secondment into a different post in the same department and am enjoying the change, although it's due to end in a few weeks anyway. There may be a possibility of a permanent post here in a few months time, but I don't know what chance I'd stand of getting it if I applied. So, at the moment, once the secondment ends, I'll be back in my old post.

Over the last few years I've applied for a couple of things that appealed to me, but not been successful :(. I've also tried for promotion within my current field but that's also been unsuccessful and I can't see much chance of that changing :sad2: .

Meanwhile ... for about 18 months I've been doing some freelance work elsewhere, on and off, in addition to my 'proper' job and now have the opportunity to apply for a more permanent contract there. Obviously nothing's guaranteed, but I think I stand quite a good chance of getting the post. I would be able to choose my hours from anything between half time and full time, and the job description has been written around the work I've been doing for the past 6 months. Trouble is, do I want it?

If I'm successful, and if I accept, I'd be leaving a secure, fairly mundane job with only a vague prospect of change until I retire (14 years hence) for something short term (2 year project) and an unknown future after that contract ends.

The new job would be better paid (although we're not talking huge sums!) and I could choose my hours, but I'd have higher travelling expenses and slightly less holiday entitlement.

Any thoughts?

sorry this has turned into such a long post!

Thats sounds like a hard one. I work in local government and the holidays are very good. For people like us who want so many holidays this has to be an important issue as well.

I wish you luck in your decision.

Given the choice I would rather do a job that I really enjoyed for less money that a job I hated for more.

Sounds as though you are ready for a change and I would suggest doing what would make you the happiest. If the worst comes to the worst and in 2 years the job does end I'm sure you could always find something else.

Hope this helps?

Ooh Hilary

This is a tough one, I can only advise you in a 'If it was me' way

First, I would definately apply for the jobs, there's no harm in applying and once you've got through the interview etc, then you have to make the decision

Secondly, it really depends on how important having a steady, even mundane job means to you. Personally (though I don't know your financial situation) I would go for the job that will bring the best out of you, the freelance one sounds to me like you really enjoy it ~ so that would be my choice

:wizard: Good Luck in whatever you decide :wizard:

:wave2: So many variables only you may know about. Taking a chance on a new opportunity if only for 2 years, sounds appealing, but not if you'll be on beans on toast at the end of it ;) I doubt that, but you know what I mean.

How do you really feel about your secondment job? Is it just the change you enjoy, or could you see yourself doing that longer term if you did hang on in local government? Is there a manager who you could sound out about your chances of working in that department in the future? Do you feel appreciated more in one job than the other?

From the tone of what you've written, I'd say that hanging on to you 'mundane' job isn't that tempting and you should choose between your 2 other options.

Isn't giving advice easy? :surfweb:

Do let us know what you decide to do, and good luck if you do take the leap :)

LOL!

Thanks for all your input :grouphug:

It's been helpful just setting things out on 'paper', and I think I will definitely apply for the new job, even if only to give me a bit more thinking time.

I suppose the fact that I've been looking for something else for a couple of years should tell me that I'm ready for a change - it's the uncertaintity of the potential new job that is making me drag my feet, I think. I'm sure I would kick myself if I get offered the new job but don't take it, but I don't know if I will be kicking myself two years hence if I do get the new job and am then left high and dry when it finishes.

Of course, if I don't get the new job, the decision will be much easier for me! ;)

The "life's too short" adage comes to mind . . . but what do you need to set you up for your retirement? Do you want the relative stability and job security that local government offers (no such thing as job security really these days, though!), or do you really fancy a change and not worry about what happens at the end of a possible two-year contract. With your CV I'm positive there will always be something out there for you :thumbsup2

Sorry, Hilary, probably not helping much here, but in my mind I've always got that piece of paper that has the "pros" on one side and the "cons" on another - and it's a hard decision to have to make.

Of course you've got to apply for both jobs, nothing to lose like people say, and for your own curiosity and peace of mind.

Good luck in whatever you decide :wizard:

I'm sure you'll make the right decision, but applying can't do any harm can it? Good luck.

I dont have any new advice to give you Hilary that has not already been given, however I do wish you good luck on whatever you do decide to do :goodvibes

Well, I officially resigned today, having been offered a new job after my interview on Tuesday :cool1:

I'm very excited now it's actually happening and, although I will miss my colleagues, I now feel I have made the right decision to move.

I'm sure all your good luck wishes must have helped ;)

I missed your intial post (whilst I was away enjoying myself in the Caribbean :teeth: ), but I think you've made the right choice. I know you were overlooked for promotion recently and I'm convinced that selection processes are illogically and stupidly skewed in favour of outside candidates. I know I'd stand a much greater chance of achieving 'promotion' by applying to a competitor organisation than I do within the company for which I've worked for 26 years. I do a really good job for my employer, but they'd rather take on someone about whom they know nothing than promote me because the assessment process is fundamentally flawed. I'm frequently approached by head-hunters who tell me they can furnish me with all the details of the assessment centres to which I'd be subjected. No wonder outside candidates come across better in interviews than I do - they've been able to prepare for the role plays, questions and presentations, whereas I have to go in totally blind! Crazy.

Very best wishes in your new venture - I'm sure you won't look back for one moment.

Well done Hilary. I knew you'd make the right decision - for you.

Great news Hilary - congrats :thumbsup2
