Job Applicant's (Rant Inside)

Do you post this crap in an effort to insult or are you just the most tactless person on the planet?
I don't know a single SAHM/D that doesn't at least have a bachelor's degree. They all serve on several volunteer boards at a time. They are willing to "get their hands dirty" and do whatever it takes to get something done. They have unbelievable organizational skills and have taught themselves all about computers because somebody on the volunteer board had to do a monthly newsletter. Through their volunteer opportunities they have made great contacts in the community that would be an asset to any company.
Are you this condescending in real life?

I don't find this condescending at all. I'm basically a SAHM without a degree. I work very part time at Barnes and Noble while looking for a job. I'd be more than happy to be a file clerk. I can't even manage to get a job in a call center for an outdoor equipment company or airline. This is despite having 2 years experience working in an airlines call center handling reservations. I was told "I don't meet their qualifications."
I will admit it is my fault I don't have a degree. I made some poor choices in the past and I'm feeling it now.
I will say I'm pretty surprised that you don't know a single SAHM/D that doesn't at least have a bachelor's degree.

Some people do learn their lessons. Are they not allowed a second chance?

they need to apply for jobs in california-our labor laws regarding this are insane (case in point-high profile case many years ago involving a man who had been documented as harrassing and threatening to his supervisors and managers. he ended up brutaly killing his immediate supervisor over a minor reprimand and served 15 years in jail. he gets out of jail and wants to re-apply for the same type of job he had previously held and successfuly sued a government agencie for denying his application! his lawyer argued that california does not preclude felonie convictions of murder from precluding a person for re-employment!-i feel for the person who now supervises that guy!).

as for applying for jobs you don't meet all the minimum qualifications for-while it may not apply to all jobs, the ones i hired for (entry level into higher promotional) were reliant on reading and following instructions in order to complete forms and document to the "t". if an application somehow got past hr and ended up with those of hiring and we found this to be the case, we would do the interview (cuz we had to, hr had set up the initial ones) but we were already of the mind set to question their skills in what we felt was a key area. we also questioned applications that were not correctly completed or vague (some career counselors will advise that if a person has something that may appear to be odd or detrimental to put in the answer field "will discuss at interview" or "personal-decline to state"-this was a major red flag and often kept the applicant from ever getting interviewed).

now i'm sure i'll get flamed for this, but in all honesty-the only consistent issue (problem) i ever had with returning to the workforce sahm's was their getting upset that i could'nt make accommodations vacation or sick leave wise for their children. my employer had a strict sick leave usage policy and it was'nt my call to give special consideration if the sick person was someone's child (and i'm not talking fmla stuff-the usual ear infections, sore throats, flu bug stuff that goes around and around...). they also had an established work force with a policy on senority driving vacation request approvals. it was very difficult for some of the returning sahm's to be faced with the fact that they would not likely be able to taylor their vacations around school holidays. on more than one occasion i (and my co-sups) were confronted by recent hires who would complain "but you knew i had kids when you hired me and so you HAD to expect i would need to take sick leave/vacation around them"-um, no-labor law says i could'nt ask you any questions about your family status nor could i use it as a consideration in hiring or administering company policy.

I think that will be my neighbor in another year. She is determined it is going to be very easy to get a job after getting her degree 14 years ago and never working. She wants a job that is only during school hours and school calendar, will allow her to stay home w/ any of her 3 sick kids, take vacations etc. when she wants and, oh yeah "make enough to make it worth it".
The funny thing is her DH is looking for a secretary. She mentioned it to a neighbor who has stayed home quite a while and now that her youngest is entering Kindergarten she is ready to hit the workforce. I mentioned to her that the woman is most likely going to want the same criteria she wanted and she said "No way my DH is going to pay for her to not be working". ie.stay home w/ sick child. HELLO!!!!!

Anyway, Anne I knew what you meant and did not think anything bad or negative in any of it.

I'm glad I am not the only one. I read the OP a couple of times trying to figure out what was so horrible. The impression I was left with is that some people have a problem with the OP and were looking for things to criticize.

I'm getting the same feeling, there must be some kind of history I don't know about since I've only been on the CB for a few months. :confused3
