Did any on you sample any of the wines at Jinkos? If so what did you have and what did it taste like?

ILUV,
We had a marvelous wine experience at Jiko a year ago. As luck would have it, our server was Ron, who is also the sommelier for Jiko. He has a passion for introducing people to new wines and especially for surprising you with something you might not think you would like.
Actually, he had also waited on us on a previous trip, when he was still at Spoodles. That night, we had told him that chardonnay was by far our favorite white wine and that we seldom liked other whites. He proceeded to bring out some non-chardonnay whites he wanted us to try, and we totally fell in love with one of them (martin kodax from Spain).
Same thing happened at Jiko. I went on an on about how pinot noir was too "thin" for my liking, and that I by far preferred merlot or cab sauv. Well, he brought out a few bottles and placed them on the table such that we could not see the labels. Guess what--we both fell in love with a Meerlust pinot noir. Awesome wine. And, once again, Ron was delighted to have surprised us.
Our experience at Jiko has prompted us to be the occasional bottle of South African wine when we are in a specialty store.
So--moral of the story--go to Jiko, request Ron as your waiter, and if he isn't available in that capacity, odds are he still might make it to your table in his role as sommelier. Have fun!!
Janet

Thanks, Janet. DH and I love trying new wines, but I read on another thread that someone had African wine in Epcot at the Food and Wine Festival and hated it.

You've put my mind at rest and look forward to this new experience.

Wonderful wine at Jiko (along with everything else we tried!) Our server (don't know who) asked us what kind of wine we liked and then poured a small amount of three different bottles for us to try. I picked what I liked the best and he filled up the glass.

I just love this service. You can get pretty much any wine they have by the glass. They did the same thing at California Grille. Takes the risk out of ordering a bottle of wine.

My DH had a lovely glass of white wine with his fish dish when we were there last May. I was pregnant at the time, but I did get a chance to sample the bouquet. After I did that, I was wishing that I could have had a glass myself. He thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've been to Jiko's several times (and will be there on Sun. night too!!) and yes, we've had many of the wines. I can't remember which ones at the moment, but I *do* remember that they were all quite good. The servers are very knowledgable (especially Ron) and more than happy to help you make a choice. In fact, they will often bring out samples if you can't decide.

Jiko has the largest selection of South African wines outside of Africa. :) I'm sure you'll find one that you like.
