Jim Hill podcast

How about, "Well that's where things get interesting..." Apparently they get interesting A LOT!!!:goodvibes
Regardless of the flaws, hands down I think Jim Hill is a great Disney historian and he really knows how to weave a fabulous tale. Most of the time, I hear the stories from Jim Hill first and then some other expert will confirm the info.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love listening to Jim Hill. I was so glad when he and Len Testa started doing the Disney Dish Podcast after his other podcast fell to the wayside. His repetitive phrases are just funny. I've often wondered if anyone played a drinking game while listening. :goodvibes

Not necessarily.

I can only speak for the merchandise aspect of things as this is what I primarily cover, but there are often times when we actually break news on the blog before other sources. For example, when Vera Bradley announced its partnership with Disney Merchandising, we were the first to have it up. The same holds true for news related to Magic Bands, Dooney & Bourke bags, and even the Main Street Bakery changing over to a Starbucks. The blog is often a resource where you will find information immediately as is The DIS's FB page and Twitter account.

With all of this being said, it's important to keep in mind that whatever information we put out there needs to be accurate and well-researched. Could that lead to a delay here or there? Of course, but then again, it's not a race. It's about providing confirmed information to help others plan their Disney vacations.

OK, I guess my generally speaking was to broad of a statement...I didn't mean The Dis gets scooped on every story...YES the Dis breaks news sometimes...AND is not in a race to get it up first waiting for verification to make sure it's correct before reporting..and I completely understand your need to defend The Dis

BUT that said reporting breaking news IS a race because it drives web site hits and ad-clicks and it is MY observation that The Dis social media accounts are behind others in this matter sometimes..just as an example the FP+ only line at TSM this week...many sites had it out before 7am on Monday, there was even a thread about it on the parks board before 7, but @TheDis didn't tweet it until 1pm...again, I do not think this is a bad thing because as I said The Dis is a great travel site and probably even knew this was going to happen but wanted to protect sources and get it right then get it first BUT to some it does make them look like they are behind the 8-ball on some stories

I've always imagined -- I say imagined because I have zero proof of this, only feeling -- that there is quite a bit of enmity floating around the Disney podcast/blog-o-sphere between the big players. There's such a notable lack of call-outs between everybody. It's always "other sources", "other podcasts", etc. (And this seems especially true with the dis-gang, or maybe I'm imagingin things again).

I think the thing we, as listeners, don't necessarily think about is that each podcast group isn't just a bunch of friends getting together to talk with us virtually, but it's really the marketing arm for their very real Disney related businesses.

In various forms, most of these podcasts are direct competitors (I don't think enmity is really the best word) - not necessarily for our listening time, but our dollars when it comes to travel agencies, ad-revenue earning eyeballs on their forums, planning tools and "meets and cruises". While we will listen to multiple podcasts in a week, we will generally choose one travel agent to work with or spend the majority of our time on one message board or even go to one meet.

Given that, I don't expect (or care) to hear Lou on the Dis Unplugged (though he did do an episode of WDWToday when he was promoting his book). There are definite exceptions (thinking mainly of the Parrish brothers - but I don't consider them as commercial), but thinking of them in terms of competitive businesses, I'm just fine with it.

Regarding the rumor thing - I couldn't care less who broke a story first, I'm happy to listen to each group talk about a news item and get their unique take.

Agreed. I don't care about the breaking news unless it will impact an upcoming vacation. I listen to certain podcasters for their unique opinions. The exception being Lou Mongello, who loves everything Disney.

Lou is an interesting person, Lou has some special perks with Disney and speaks as if universal doesn't exist and that Disney can do no wrong and has no problems.

Regarding breaking news I don't really care who has it first but when it comes down to it I follow all the major disney/ theme park news/fan sites.
Micechat
The Dis
Wdwmagic
Orlando theme park news
Screamscape
Allears

I tend to find that wdwmagic has the news first in most cases and one thing I like about them is they post not just the big breaking news but smaller things like construction updates, certain permits that have been filed, and things that will affect the area such as a gas station refurbishment coming next week near the boardwalk. None of these other sites do a lot of that really. I do love the blogs on the dis and each site has it's own perks. In my opinion I think the dis has these podcast out of anyone.

and YES to everything you said too

I've always enjoyed listening to Jim. He's a great source of historical information. And I've always understood his speculations are "might-be"s.

I love Jim Hill on any podcast but I start counting every time he says "you know".

This is very true. While some of the podcasts may have started as purely a fan based venture, there is no question that the major podcasts out there are a tool, to promote/market/drive the podcasters real business. Its no different than any other media where there is a competition to reach a market base. Podcasting as a whole as changed into a very real business platform.

As far as Lou, goes, I know the over the top rose colored tone turns some people off, but once again this is a business, and he figured out who his core audience is and how he wants to market himself to them. It seems to work for him.

That's the great thing about the different podcasts. Everyone can pick and choose who or what they want to listen to. I will say that I love Lou Mongello's interview shows with the various Disney legends. I learn so much Disney history, its great. I just can't take his everyday shows and I feel that way about a lot of podcasts.

My favorite podcasts are: the DisUnplugged, Disney Dish with Jim Hill, and sometimes WDW today. The first 2, I never miss.

I used to feel like he was just throwing everything on the wall and seeing what stuck, but he totally nailed FastPass+, so I'm not as much of a skeptic of his as I used to be.
