Hello! I have been wanting to try Jiko at AKL for the oak grilled steak on mac and cheese. That is the one thing that I wanted to try, but recently someone posted a pic of the menu and it wasn't on there. I am not sure if it was at the bottom of the menu and that part of the menu got cut off :confused3 or maybe it is no longer offered.
Has anyone been there lately that can confirm if it IS or IS NOT on the menu.

Many thanks!

The mac & cheese went off the menu in October. The filet is now accompanied by a potato gratin.

We were there in mid October and while it was not on the menu you could still ask for it. I imagine that will not last long. Bummer because it was soooo yummy. The new potatoes are not so great.

It was roasted fingerling potatoes instead of potato gratin when we were there on November 4th. The broccolini had also been replaced, by green beans. The red wine reduction, which I've always thought was the best part of the meal, remains unchanged.

I was so bummed to hear the mac and cheese went. I too was waiting to get it next time. :sad2:

Does anyone think it will come back?

What are the chances they will make it if you ask.:confused3

The chances are low, I think. When I was there last month, a man at the bar ordered the filet as the bartender and I were discussing it. He asked for the mac and cheese when he heard us talking about it. The bartender said that the kitchen would bring it out, as a side dish. He made it seem like the kitchen wouldn't actually plate it the way it used to come.

Maybe it is the constant changing of Chefs. Many of the chefs that they hire to replace existing ones don't understand African cuisine, so the food becomes Americanized. Now, I don't see how it can get any more American that good ol' mac & cheese, but this is just an assumption. But they have gone through many chefs in the last few years. :confused3

Just ate at Jiko last night and the mac & cheese has been replaced with the fingerling potatoes. My DW had the steak and it was delicious. There has been a change in chefs and I think for the better. I had the same entree in September and was verfy dissapointed in the quality. Last night was different, the new chef has added his own touch and with good results.

I liked it too but honestly it was just Mac and cheese.
As long as they still have the filet, I'm good.
Hey it's a chance to try something different.

Really? What's your source of info on that?
What was the previous Chefs resume?
What's the current?
How do you know to make a statement like that?:confused3

We were there the first week of Dec and the filet was served with fingerling potatoes (as a number of people have said here). The filet with the red wine reduction was amazing, but the fingerling potatoes were just okay. Kind of wish they had paired the filet with the truffled mashed potatoes from the delicious braised short ribs. The truffled mash had more flavor than the fingerling potatoes, and they added something special to the short ribs that I felt was lacking with the filet. Maybe you could substitute?
