Just booked Jiko for me and hubbys first anniversary dinner!

I've heard of the mystic filet on Mac and cheese. I am bummed it's not on the menu anymore. Has anyone tried the new variation recently and if so what are your thoughts?

What are some of the other delicious dishe's you love there?

We have always been able to get them to substitute the mac and cheese to accompany the filet (every year, often multiple times a year, since it has been removed from the menu), even after the most recent menu and chef updates. My husband hadn't even gotten the request fully vocalized, and our waiter knew exactly what he wanted, and said it was absolutely no problem, and still one of their most popular items the last time we were there.

Additionally things we enjoy include, but are not limited to:

Taste of Africa
Wild boar appetizer
Fish in tomato-butter sauce
wine

Really? I might have to give it a shot and try and order it! :) My husband wants the wild boar appetizer so bad!

My server suggested the combo without me asking. It was good. Not outstanding.

I think my expectations were too high- Jiko gets a lot of rave reviews by folks here. If your expectations of steak are along the lines of a real steak house- like Bavette's in Chicago- you'll be disappointed. But if you just really like steak, and are expecting an average cut of meat with decent preparation, you'll enjoy it. Jiko's is beautiful and if you like wine, the wine list was awesome. Have fun!

I read here this week that they were no longer allowing the substitution for the Mac and Cheese.
I don't know if that if fact or not, I just mention that I read it

That would be a shame. We have ordered mac and cheese ever since it came off the menu and have always gotten it.

I tend to agree. Jiko is a great restaurant and will be good regardless of what you order. IMHO, ordering steak at Jiko is kind of missing the point of the restaurant. If you want great steak go to Shula's or Yachtsman.

I agree that Jiko's filet isn't as high quality of a piece of meat you'd get at a high end steakhouse but it's the wood grill plus the rub that makes us come back.

If there's no more mac and cheese substitutions it more than likely will be off the itinerary for us this time.

Can anyone confirm that they were denied being able to sub out the pumpkin pap isidu for Mac and Cheese?

I ordered the filet at Jiko when I was last there about a year ago. Ordered it medium rare. The first time, it came out black and blue (seared on the outside, raw on the inside). I sent it back for a refire and had the same problem. It was a particularly thick hunk of filet, so maybe the person at the grill didn't know how to do it right. The third time, they butterflied it and cooked it until it was leather. I couldn't eat it at all.

It always struck me as funny and odd that people revere the steak and mac & cheese at an African fusion restaurant.

I wholeheartedly agree with the opinions that you should get something more themed but If I could get both the Filet and Mac and Cheese anywhere else I would. I'd love to try other things but can't without doing two visits to Jiko on the same vacation. The combination is what gets me Rub+Wood Grill+their specific Mac and Cheese. I'd feel bad not getting it because the times we've had it in the past were pretty much perfect.

I'm wrestling with getting the short rib instead of the filet but would still go for the mac and cheese instead of the pap that comes with it.

I'd also be interested to see if Disney is using Liver in the Pap isidu which comes with the Filet which is traditional. However, being Disney I don't think I'd see liver out of anything other than part of a pate or terrine on a charcuterie plate.

To be clear if the Mac and Cheese sub option for the filet is no longer available I'm 100% going for the Elk or Lamb Tagine

I get the Manti Dumplings/Boar/Charcuterie for the African fusion cuisine for apps to share along with dessert when I get the filet.

This is how DH feels as well, he is a huge steak person and the only time I ever see him even order filet is at Jiko, he just likes the combination of the flavors. At other steak restaurants he would never even consider filet as his cut of choice, as he generally just doesn't like it compared to say a porterhouse. Thankfully I have no desire for filet so I get the more themed items and we are both happy.

He was still able to get the mac and cheese as a substitution in January which is about 5 months after the new chef joined.

There is an article on today's Disney Food Blog that the MAC and Cheese option is coming back to Jiko tomorrow 4/7/2017. But it's Mac'n Cheese " Bobotie" with all kinds of added ingredients and spices like the Bobatie at Boma. They report that the 4 Cheese version is only available on the kids menu.

Their short rib is very good. 10 years ago they had a kona rub on the short ribs and it was amazing. None of the variations they've had since, while good, are as good as the kona one.

Seems like you can still order it though its just whats on the kids menu

From the article

"By the by, if you would prefer the standard Mac and Cheese… the answer is yes, you will still be able to order the Kids’s version (without the Bobotie elements) to accompany your filet!"

Good to know! Thanks for the info!

Wow how ironic that it is one of the main pages on DFB!
