We are thinking of flying out of New York JFK airport from the 1st time.

We will be driving from Montreal, Quebec (seats are about 650$ cheaper then would be out of Burlington), anyways I would like to know how the parking works, how far is it from the terminal and if there is shuttles (free?),

We would be flying with Jetblue (don't know what terminal?)

Can someone confirm: long term parking 18$/day @ lot 8

If the flight is at 7pm what time should we plan on arriving to the airport?

how much time the whole thing should take :confused3

We are used to flying out of Burlington a very small airport, so we are not sure to plan for such a big one...

Thanks in advance for helping :)

I can confirm that long-term parking at JFK is $18 per day. JFK has the "airtrain" which is a light rail shuttle service that has two spurs: one that runs a loop from the long-term lot, around all the terminals, and back, and a second that runs a loop from the nearby commuter rail station, around all the terminals, and back. The airtrain is free for guests parking at the long-term lot, so you will be able to take the airtran from your car directly to the Jetblue terminal, which is terminal 5, or T5 as they call it. It should take you about 10-12 minutes from when you get on the airtrain to when you arrive at the terminal.

You will like T5. It is JFK's newest terminal and has only been open for approximately a year. How long in advance you should plan to arrive at the airport depends on what day of the week you are leaving. If your 7PM flight is on a Friday, Sunday or Holiday, I would plan on getting to the parking lot no later than 4:30 PM. Any other day and 5PM should be fine.

Thank you, that helps alot.

We would be flying Saturday Oct 8th (Columbus Weekend) so I guess we should plan on being there at 4:30pm to be safe. :thumbsup2

when we park at JFK we us Avistarparking. It was $14.00 a day and they shuttle you to the airport. We do this instead of long term parking. I find it so much easier and less money. You can make a reservation and pay when you pick up your car. when you get home you pick up your luggage call the 800# and they pick you up really quick. Hope this helps. Michelle

THe last 2 times i flew out of JFK, I used JFKsmart park. I think it was $14 a day plus there was a free day if it was a week long stay. Great thing about JFK smart park or avistar is they have your car ready and waiting for you when you get to their lot.

Interesting... Didn't know there was other options.

are they like valet services? you give them the keys and they park it for you?
Do you have to wait a long time for the shuttle? How long in the shuttle ride?

Avistar is was about 15 minutes but it is door to door. I like it better because it is like Valet. They park your car and keep your keys when you get home you will call them and your car will be waiting for you to put your luggage in. Going to the airport there is always a shuttle waiting, when you arrive home we never waited more the 5 minutes to be picked up. I used JFK parking one time. It was easy getting to the terminal but I found it very confusing going back to find your car. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Michelle

I don't know if they've gotten better but a few years ago Avistar (JFK location) had a lot of issues with damaged cars.

OP--Check flights out of Albany.

JFK smart park is closer to the airport than avistar, by a block i think. You pull in give them your keys and the shuttle takes you to the airport.
You give them a call after you have claimed your luggage and the van comes. I think we waited about 15 mintues last time. It seemed like longer since it was after midnight.

If you are thinking of Jet Blue, may want to try Westchester County Airport (HPN). Direct flights out of there to MCO. Prices about the same as JFK and Bradley (Hartford, CT - perhaps another option for you and also roundtrip). HPN is a small airport with few perks, but security is a breeze, and flights are usually on time. Aside from the traffic to get to/from JFK, the runway traffic can be horrible. One bad thing at HPN is that parking is $25 per day, but I've used a LaQuinta Park and ride in Armonk just a few miles a way. Price is about $10 per day to park and includes free shuttle to/from the airport. I live in between Hartford, CT and NY airports and HPN has turned into my new favorite for any place I can do a nonstop flight out of (used it for Cincinnati, and Orlando multiple times).

I did check the price for HPN and it's about 260$ more than JFK and the times don't work for us.

We usually fly out of Burlington, VT as it's the closest US airport to us. But the rates are much higher than what we have paid in the past :sad2:

When I reread your post I realized I hadn't checked the rates for Hardford, CT. Turns out that it's about the same as JFK but it's much closer to us and saves us time, gas & 2.5 Hrs in a car with bored kids :thumbsup2 I think the parking is cheaper too!!

That is awesome, Thanks I would never have thought of that. Booking this afternoon :woohoo:

If you are committed to Hartford, check out the Park and fly from springhill suites or fairfield inn in windsor locks. I have never used them for airport service but stay there when I visit Six Flags NE. They are nice hotels and close to the airport (Like at the end of the runway) I cant vouch for the shuttle service but see plenty of people who stay there and are clearly using the airport. There is also an off site car park near there and a really good 1950's style diner

Awesome. I'm glad I could be of some help. I didnt know your return date, but I checked all 3 airports for the 8th returning the 15th, and all 3 were about the same. Catch was instead of Jet Blue out of HPN, they had Airtran for their lowest price. But agreed, Hartford is closer, and parking is cheaper. As Elmo007 said, park and fly option is solid. I've used it a few years back before I started using HPN. I think it was the Fairfield Inn. Even though we are a little over 1 hour away, we had the first flight out with a 2 year old and a wife that cannot commit to packing on time. Anyway, back then, the cool thing, was that you could park for free in the hotel lot OR the secured offsite lot for up to 10 days free of charge with a paid night stay. I chose the offsite and after we arrived at the hotel that evening, I dropped wife and son off and I took the car to the offsite lot, got a shuttle back to the hotel, and scheduled the hotel shuttle to the airport. PS: Jet Blue just started flying out of Hartford in Oct 2010 I think...

I didn't even look at any other carrier... We like Jetblue and the fact that the suitcases are included in the air fair. I just saw the new rates that were released for Jetblue for the rest of the year and it looks like our airport we usually use BTV (Burlington) the rates have all increased a lot. Looks like our new Disney airport will be Bradley!!

Thank again for the tip
