Hi all,

Thought you may be the best to ask as we are from the UK and have no idea of timings.

We are travelling to Disney in August with a few days in New York before hand.

We are staying in Mahattan, near Penn Station, and need to get to JFK by 8am (1040 flight) being extra prepared. What is the traffic like in New York at that time to get to JFK airport? Google says 43 minute drive but knowing London we would always take that with a pinch of salt during the morning

Thanks

Jess

As a New Yorker, I'm going to tell you that that trip by car could take half an hour or it could take three hours and there's no way to know for sure until you're on your way to the airport!

If you're near Penn Station, the easiest (and depending on your party size) cheapest thing to do would be to take the train! You can either take the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) to Jamaica (there's a 6:58am train M-F not sure about the weekends) for $5/person with a City Ticket and then transfer to the AirTrain JFK ($7.75/person). The whole trip should take about an hour.

You could also take the A train (subway) from 34th St-Penn Station to Howard Beach-JFK Airport ($2.75/person) and then transfer to the AIrTrain there as well ($7.75/person). This would take about an hour and a half.

Personally, I'd take the LIRR option as it's much easier to navigate with luggage. If your party is 4 people or fewer, it will be less than an uber or taxi. If you have more than 4, it will be about the same cost as an uber.

OP has an 8am flight so 6:58am would not be a good choice.
There are plenty of trains going to Penn - Jamaica which is a 20-25 min trip.
Airtrain from Jamaica to JFK is about another 20-25 minutes.

From Penn M-F there are trains leaving 4:51, 5:11, 5:26. Sat/Sun 4:54, 5:55.
These options will get you to JFK about 1.5-2 hours before the flight.

Be aware though... with new service that just started to Grand Central these time may change slightly in the coming weeks as the LIRR has not finalized their new schedules.

Taxi is going to close to $100 with tip. Uber the same, maybe more.
https://www.carmellimo.com/ is a car service. They're about the best price and you can schedule it in advance.
Still going to be close to $100 with tip.

Rail should be the cheapest.

if you think you have too much.luggage to handle on the train you probably have too much luggage for a taxi or ride share. Carmel can supply a larger vehicle, for.a.price. Tell carmel you want to get to JFK by 8a. Let them suggest a pick up time.

Again rail is likely to be cheapest and possibly fastest.

Edited to add the fare is slightly higher then quoted by PP.
Airtrain fare is $8 the LIRR fare might be slightly higher

Dial 7 is another car service, very similar to Carmel. We use either one, depending on what coupon I can apply.

Given the violent attacks that have occurred in the New York subway lately, I would steer clear of it.

The LIRR fare with the City Ticket (which is why I bolded it) is in fact $5, not many people know about it. I didn't realize they raised the AirTrain fares again, I've been doing most of my flying out of LGA these days...

Over 2.5 million people use the subway each day, for a system that size there are always bound to be incidents but the likelihood of that happening to you is very small. Of course, it's a personal choice to accept the risk but statistically, the subway is still much safer than it was in the '70s-'90s.

Twenty-five people have been shoved onto New York City subway tracks in the past year. Nothing like that has ever been so problematic before. Feel free to read the Daily Mail article on this topic:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11357789/TWENTY-FIVE-victims-shoved-NYC-subway-cars-far-year.html#:~:text=Queens saw one-,Twenty-five people have been shoved onto the subway tracks, while others narrowly avoided death.

You might have been more likely to get mugged in the past, but getting pushed onto the tracks is a much more severe event, so saying it's "much safer" now is not true.

You might have been more likely to get mugged 30 years ago, but getting pushed onto the tracks is a much more severe event, so saying it's "safer" now is not accurate.
Not to nit pick but the suggested routing does NOT include the subway. The LIRR is a commuter train. The train from the Jamaica station to the airport is express.

OP can't receive private messages (conversations).
If the OP is reading this thread:
1) If you're staying within a few blocks of Penn Station LIRR to Jamaica Station then air train to JFK should be the cheapest and probably the fastest way to go. Figure an hour from Penn Station, maybe a little less. Unlike London elevators (lifts) should be available in all stations. Ask or look for the signs

2) If you have too much luggage to handle, ate too far from Penn Station or have safety concerns book carmal or dial7. You can wait umtil you arrive in NY. Tell them number of pax, amount of luggage and time you want to be at JFK. Let them tell you pickup time.

Weekday some of the tunnel and maybe bridge will change some of the outbound lanes to in bound. Instead of 2 lanes in the midtown tunnel there will be only 1 lane leaving Manhattan.

Manhattan to JFK isn't too bad, there is generally traffic to Queens but from Penn to JFK may be closer to 40 minutes, an hour to be safe. You can use a service like Uber, or a more dedicated service like Rideline in NY who will likely manage the timing and flight planning for you.

Personally if you are planning to leave for a 1040 flight, you should be in the airport around 7 in the morning. JFK is insane if you don't usually fly from there.
