OP even budgeting 2.5% of the purchase price beyond £390 for the duty it would still be much cheaper and more choice buying in Florida than over in blighty xxx

Unless it costs over £630. The 2.5% duty fee only covers goods up to this amount. A engagement ring could cost considerably more.

Also remember that anything bought here in duty free on the way out counts as part of your allowance for when you return to the UK. My DH had to buy a shaver last time we went to WDW as his broke that morning at the airport hotel and it counted as part of his allowance - which he did declare but we've always been lucky and been let through.

I have just done some calcs and the fact that I would have to pay £24 on a ring were it to cost £1000 doesn't bother me that much.

Its the VAT on the ring that bothers me.

I have to say my Mrs would prefer something smaller that came from Tiffany's in Mall at Millenia or another reputable dealer than larger from an outlet store but that's maybe just my Mrs.

Also don't worry about repairs and valuations etc anyone can do those admittedly at a fee but given what you'll save buying outside this country it's worth it.

I got the Mrs a diamond eternity ring from Tiffany's in New York years ago at half what I'd pay for the identical ring over here and a pearl necklace and earrings from Tiffany's in mall at millenia a couple of years ago again for a fraction of the UK cost.

I asked my Mrs to marry me without a ring which we then went and chose together as she knows shed loads more about diamonds than I do. There are diamonds and there are diamonds. A small but high quality one will appreciate in value, whereas a large but flawed one will be worth little in years to come. Not so much for selling it on as everyone would hope that doesn't happen but even for insurance purposes, if stolen the insurance company will give you a pittance for a lower quality diamond ring regardless of the valuation.

i just got a new engagment ring last week , wish i had waited now !! Will have to have a look at some wedding rings while we are there , or maybe another engagemnet ring as although my new one is beautiful it does have a small inclusion in the diamond

You could always get a cute Disney ring in WDW and propose with that, and then go and pick the ring together?

Then she can try it on and know about sizing etc.

I don't think having the exact ring is really a big deal at the engagement moment, and she get sthe excitement of ring shopping!!

I must say I disagree with that.

I know the sizing and type of ring, I think it would mean much more by buying it myself and putting the thought into it.

I think the Disney ring is a wonderful idea x I helped choose ring and so knew a proposal was en route. A cute Disney ring and the prospect if a ring shopping trip in tye happiest place on earth would soooo make any girls dreams come true x

Sorry should have said, the element of surprise was gone because I knew what was coming BUT I was very grateful to have a hand in choosing my own ring as would have found it impossible to say I really don't like it and then would have been stuck with it forever!

Andy, there is so much thought already in the wonderful choice of venue and way in which you propose x I would think any woman would appreciate full input into the ring choice but don't know your soon to be df so could be completely wrong x

That's great as long as you know exactly what she likes.

I'd been dreaming of my perfect ring for years so was very happy to choose my own and will be over the moon to wear it for the rest of my life. Wouldn't change anything about my proposal or my ring - hence the suggestion.

I have to say, I agree with what Andy has said. If he already knows the kind she likes and he knows her size, then I think it is lovely if he does the whole thing. The proposal in the venue that he wants to do it with the ring that he thinks she will love!

My husband decided on the day he proposed that he would do it that day, he hadn't planned to do it so he didn't have a ring and we chose one together, I would have been more than happy if he had picked one of the kind I liked and asked me with it!
