JetBlue New Carry-on Size Limit in 2015?

I read some news stories recently about some of the major airlines changing their carry-on bag size limit to 22" x 14" x 9" (including wheels, etc) but many of those articles also noted that JetBlue still had a generous size limit of around 24" x 16" x 10".

DH and I typically collect our own bags at baggage claim and use a town car service when traveling by ourselves so we only carry on a small, under-the-seat, tote then. This fall, however, we will be traveling with additional family members, including a 3-year old, and we will be using DME with the luggage delivery service. We will be spending check-in day at the pool. Since we won't have our luggage right away, we each want to take an "over head bin" carry-on bag so that we will have swimsuits, shorts, and other items we will need for that first day.

Here is my concern: I decided to double-check the JetBlue carry-on size limits; their website now says their limit is 22" x 14" x 9". Our small wheeled bags are 23.5" x 15.5" x 10". Has anyone seen the JetBlue gate agents making passengers gate-check bags recently that likely met the previous requirements? We really don't want to delay our DME departure by having to go to baggage claim to collect carry-on bags that may have been disallowed on board (MCO baggage seems to take a very long time to come out). Thanks for your thoughts!

Sometimes you have to gate check bags anyway if the overheads are full even if within size requirements. I would take one bag that will fit under the seat with your needed items and then put the DME tags on the bags they make you check (if they do).

Your bags are too large to carry-on and probably won't fit in the overhead bins. There are usually bag sizers by the gate. Whether or not you will have to have your bag checked in the sizer is unknown. I suggest that you purchase a cheap carry-on bag which meets JetBlue's size limit.

They were checking baggage sizes the last time we flew jetblue out of Reagan. They were tagging bags that didn't fit. Also some of the last passengers had to get their bags tagged as the bins were full. It was one of the smaller planes, not the Airbus. Check to see what type of plane you're on. If it's the embraer those fill up quickly and are not roomy at all.

To the best of my knowledge JB has had the same measurements for years...if you add up the height, width, and depth...you get 45". As long as your bag adds up to this you should be fine. I have an LL Bean rolling duffle that I've used for many years...at least 8 or so. It is the perfect size to fit in JB bins, wheels in. If its one of the smaller planes, maybe the Embraer 190, the bag won't fit wheels in and has to go sideways.

Yes, there is talk about making carry-on allowances smaller.....but that seems to be for foreign airlines, not American ones. It will be awhile, I imagine, before we see that happen. I do have to say though, that I have been amazed at the bags people bring on board with them. I'm not sure, I. What lifetime, they felt those bags would fit in the overhead bins. And once they finally got a bag crammed in, it was almost impossible to get it out upon landing!
So please, try to stay within the guidelines.

Thanks, everyone. I'm not typically a rule breaker, and I do try to stay within established guidelines, but seeing different numbers in print, plus the fact that my current bags did seem to meet the guidelines at one time, had me second guessing whether I need to readjust my packing plans. I really don't want to buy new carry on bags for this trip, but I didn't think about duffle bags - I will look around. Either way, I'll be sure to stick to the 22x14x9 limit. Maybe we don't need as much stuff as I'm thinking and backpacks will do. And, I agree - some of the items we've seen people trying to bring on board were crazy - I don't want to be that person!

A bag which only fits sideways is probably depriving another passenger of bin space.

The newer bins are designed to accept 6 bags, on their side. The depth dimension is now important.Edited to add. OP is correct current max bin bag size has been reduced. The max size for bin bags isn't listed as total linear dimension s. Each side must comply. Under jet blues old rules legal sized bags would only fit sideways. The current rules are fairer

A picture is worth a thousand words. http://www.boeingimages.com/archive/Boeing’s Space Bins Make Room for More Bags on 737s-2JRSXLJ82S6I.htm

It should be noted that the new Boeing bins fit 9x14x22 bags as shown (the website even says so), and that they have been flying that way for five years on the Dreamliner, with next gen 737's getting the Dreamliner bins. It's the new Airbus bins that when on their side require the smaller limit.

Jec. The bin was introduced 5 years ago but existing planes are getting the bins as planes are updated. Put it simply, new cabin configurations feature space saver seats. Less padding means additional rows, but with the same pitch.

As the number of aircraft with the new bins increase some airlines will be enforcing smaller max bin bag.

The next gen BSI interior cannot be retrofit to older aircraft. Only the 787 and 737 next gen will have it. The also fit current larger bags on their side.

The trouble is with the A320neo, which requires the reduced width and depth bags.

The OPs bags exceeds Jet Blue current limits by over an inch in 2 sides and at least an inch for the third. The OP is in trouble if jet blue enforced their policy

Erm, yes. Reading those dimensions, the OP's bag is as large (within 1/2 an inch) of my favorite *checked* bag.

My bag research, including this thread, has been a bit of an eye opener. When I bought my current "carry on" bags, I searched the retailer's website specifically for carry-ons. Even now with the new size limits receiving some press, searching that way could get travelers into trouble. Some sites list inside dimensions and not outside, and many sites don't have a search dedicated to 22x14x9. It takes some work to find a compliant bag, especially if you want wheeled.

I agree. We fly united a lot and they have always had one of the lowest allowances. I have one bag now that works within the guidelines.

This is untrue. The size limit of a carry-on bag on United Airlines is 22x14x9 inches, the same as Delta, American, Hawaiian, etc.

I thought United was one of the only domestic airlines to actively enforce size limits.
AA does as well, although their sizers are about 1/2 to 1 inch bigger than the limits, and it's rare you'll see an elite dipped into the sizer, I've seen them force a dip into the sizer at least a dozen times on my flights recently.
