on CNN now... Southwest flight landing from Baltimore

More details:

Plane crashed through a barrier and onto a street hitting a car. Although noone in the plane was injured, someone in the car was seriously injured.

Awful! Imagine how scary that would be! Which street did it go onto?? Was the runway slippery/icy??

Wow- that is just awful. I can't even imagine being in that car and seeing a plane coming towards you.

I could be wrong but I think I heard Central Avenue??

Reminds me of the Air Florida flight from National Airport :( Though not as bad since it seems everyone on the plane is okay.

The weather here is pretty bad. It has been snowing since 2 pm, as fast as they clean the streets and salt it is covered again. I wonder why they tried to land?

I have flown out of midway tons of times and driven that intersection hundreds of time.

I hope it all turns out for the best

They are saying it's 55th and Cicero, no one on plane injured, several cars hit on ground with injuries.

More details on msnbc.com

2 cars--2 occupants in cars seriously injured. Also stating person on the ground injured.

None of the 98 people on board Southwest Airlines Flight 1248 was reported injured when the plane slid off the runway about 7:15 p.m. But a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department said there were “serious injuries” for two occupants of two vehicles struck by the aircraft, near W. 55th Street and Central Avenue.

NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV reported that one person on the street was also injured.

The flight, a Boeing 737, had departed from Baltimore en route to Chicago, according to the city’s Department of Aviation.

An aircraft mechanic at Midway told WBBM-AM radio that the plane’s nose gear had collapsed, at least one of the engines was damaged and the jet appeared to have been hit by a vehicle.

I can't believe they tried to land in that. I've flown when we've been denied landing for a lot less. Poor decision and I imagine someone will have to answer for it.

I do think its funny how sensationalized this is due to media. I had to laugh when the reporter asked ( while looking at live feed of the snowstorm there) is weather could have been a factor...

Why? because airlines are under pressure from people that want no delays. They lose money from people who can't comprehend that something could just go wrong.

That is scary. I remember the same sort of thing happened at the Burbank airport a couple years ago. The plane broke through the airport barriers and went onto the streets stopping just short of a gas station. Imagine your standing there filling your tank and look up to see a plane pulling in next to you!! :earseek: I don't remember why that happened then, but I'm sure weather was not a factor. Just one more reason why I hate to fly.

The first time I saw Midway, I couldn't believe how close to roads the runways were. And, when you stand out on the road, it almost seems like you can touch the planes when they land and take off. The airport really freaked me out.
