Hello all..

I’m working on a project for my political science class. I wanted to get some opinions from those who have Jessica’s law ( or a version of it ) in their state. Do you think it helps, do you think it makes things worse, or you can just share your feelings about it.

This is not a debate. If you don’t agree with the poster(s) above you please keep it to yourself. In November California will be voting on Prop 83 ( Jessica’s law ) that’s why I am doing this report.

Thanks for your time..

Would you please explain what Jessica's Law is?

I don't recognize any Maryland legislation by that name, but that doesn't mean we don't have something like it. Thanks.

It's a law that would requie registered sex offenders to wear an electronic tracking device at all times.

How anyone could think this is non beneficial is beyond me. I think an electronic device is too kind.

These bracelets can literally be removed anytime the perp sees fit to take it off. I'm certainly for doing all we can, but I'm just not so convinced that the expense justifies the means so to speak. If it saves one child though, it will have been more than worth it.

Personally, I'm much more in favor in having a national database with all known violent offenders listed for ANY ONE to access. It should include a photo, name, address, place of employment, and offense.

I see Lilly did answer what the bill is, but I wanted to add that it's named Jessica's Law after 9 year old Jessica Lunsford who was sexually assaulted and murdered by John Evander Couey last year in Florida. Remember the case where he buried the child alive? :sad1:

Actually, I believe it's called, The Jessica Lunsford Act, and shortened to Jessica's Law.

With the current debacle in the John Mark Karr case, I cannot fathom Prop 83 will fail in California. I certainly will be voting yes, even though I think it's lacking in some key areas.

It's horrifying that John Mark Karr may walk away with no criminal record. :sad2:

No, I'm not. I don't like the idea of the government tracking people. If these people are truly dangerous, flippin keep them in jail.

The case of the little girl that was buried alive is the most horrifying one I ever heard. There just isn't ANYTHING they could do to that guy that I would say, "Oh, now that's too harsh." Put him on the rack, tar and feather him, burn him alive, I don't care.

I just don't like tracking devices on citizens.
