How closely do they monitor the age limits on this? The site says 12 and under, but do they check magic bands for age or is it more an honor system (I have a child who will be slightly older but really wants to do it and could pass for the age) when you sign up?

At signups, they'll ask the kid a few questions - including his/her age.

I didn't realize it was 12 and under. Good thing we are going just a few months before my 12 year old turns 13. He's always been too shy to get up on stage and now that he's a little older, he's really excited about it!

They asked my kids their ages. I suppose an older kid could fudge it, but my little guy was very proud of being three! (He didn't make the cut.)
