I'm deep into the planning stages of our 01/23-01/30 trip. I've read lots of threads here, and many of the travel books, and advice on allears, etc. Everybody keeps saying it's a must to go at rope drop in order to fit in all the stuff you want to do. It seems to me, however, that most of the references in the books and postings usually seem to cater to summer travelers or people who are planning trips when park visitations are at their highest.

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who's gone in mid-winter like we are, how pertinent is it for us to get to a park at rope drop in order to get a decent amount accomplished?

We will be there Jan. 23 - 31, but off property. I am really hoping that it isn't going to be too busy. From everything I've read, we should be alright. As for rope drop, it cant hurt, but it could be a little chilly some mornings. I noticed some speak of quite cool temps in the early morning and after sunset. We have never seen to a rope drop, but we arrive right around 9:00-9:15. I guess we'll know when we get there! Happy planning! :cheer2:

Well, we will all be there at the same time! I went last year the same time and we didn't see a single rope drop on purpose. Now granted, we STROLLED through our trip, and we are not commandos. I do think, however, that you should plan to make at least one, just for the experience.

My DD6 (now DD7) had a very hectic morning when we wanted to meet Tink before our 1030 Akershus visit. It was a Mommy and girl morning, just the two of us. SO we got up early to meet her at Toon Town (which by the way, doesn't open till 10!) and we HAPPENED to get there at rope drop. We didn't plan it, we just wanted to be early. It was pretty cool, everyone welcoming you in, big Mickey hands waving. She loved it!!

So maybe go for the experience, but still take your time through the parks!

Lots of us going that week. Under the 90 day mark, WooHoo!

I do plan to take our time to enjoy it! I plan, plan, plan before hand, but I'm not the type to have to dot all the i's. We are doing an early breakfast at Tusker and will probably see AK rope drop -- altho I'm wondering if it's as big a spectacle as I've heard MK is?

My husband really wanted to do another cruise b/c his idea of a fun vaca is relaxing (can't blame him there). He's already told me not to plan on any early mornings except the AK one. That's mainly why I was worried.

So Toon Town rope drops at 10am, separate from the entry to MK? That's a good tip I didn't even know! Thank you! I learn something new every single day on these boards.

When we took our oldest son(he was 9) we were at DHS for rope drop and it was the coolest and most exciting time. Its really hyped up but thats what makes is exciting the music, crowd and the CM's are soo much fun. Our first stop was the Tower of Terror and I told my DH and DS that we were not going to run but we ended up running there and we laughed the whole way just because you get sooo pumped up waiting for the rope to drop! It was fun and still a great memory.

Now would I do that with DD who is 4 probably not.

Depends on the park. I went the first week of February last year and it was UNBELIEVABLY packed (I got back last night and it was way more packed in Feb than it was last week). Don't forget that a lot of international school groups go at this time and the cheerleading competitions are going on at that time as well. The issue with these groups is that they hit the FP machines in huge groups and wipe out the FPs for the day. SOOOO, for MK and DHS, I would be there for rope drop. MK is not a one day park anyway so assuming that you are planning on multiple days there, you should be able to finish everything w/o being a rope drop. But if you are only going for one day and plan to hit just the highlights- be there at rope drop. DHS is still a mad dash for TSM. We were there for rope drop and still didn't get FP returns until 1:30pm!!! They were out for the day about 2pm. Even at rope drop, the standby line was at 30 minutes!!! It's nuts! If you want to ride TSM, I would definitely plan to be at rope drop, grab a FP (you WILL want to ride again later the in day) and then hit the standby line before it gets too long

I second the PP's suggestion to be at rope drop at DHS in order to ride TSM. Rope drop is not what it used to be. The CM's from TSM and HTT are there to WALK you to your destination. The same process exists at Epcot. They will not let you pass to arrive at your first ride ahead of them (they are the CM's for the most popular ride, and the ride cannot operate with them there). OP if your DH is not into early mornings, bring cell phones so you and your child(ren) can go for rope drop. DH can sleep in and meet up with you. The busses run all the time and if relaxing is most important to him, have him relax and meet you at the park. If this is not a realistic option for your family, there will be rope drops on you next trip too! TSM has massive lines as it is still fairly new and the most popular ride at DHS. Be there for rope drop, get FP's and then get in line. It will likely be a 30 minute wait or a bit longer by the time you get your FP's. But it is worth it to go through the queue and see the fantastic decorative elements throughout. The view is amazing and the time will pass quickly. If you only use FP you will not experience all that the entry queue has to offer, as you bypass the majority of that through the Fastpass entry door. I love going in January. The crowds are definitely lower but let's face it....It's Disney World and there will always be a lot of people there no matter how you look at it. I am going with my DM(mom) 12/14-19. We try and go every year for those four days. It is our special time together. I went this year in May also for DGS and my birthday celebrations. TSM is currently our most favorite ride so you will want to attempt to be there one morning for rope drop. You could try to go for morning magic hour entry, which will allow you to enter one hour before they open to the public (as long as you are staying on Disney property). Be sure to print out the park hours from this web site as it lists all of the times for park openings to include EMH's, parades, fireworks and special events. PP also mentioned being at "rope drop" for Mickey's Toontown to meet Tink. there WILL absolutely be people there. I did this with DGD(2 1/2) in early December of last year. We were at rope drop, but I had to park her stroller and then head in. The line was already jumping to 30 mins!! The reason is that they only take a small group of people in each time, but it is absoltuely worth seeing. Have a wonderful time! Just do what works for your family.
One more thing. Toontown did not open until 11 when I went last year (or it may have been the year before that). That may have changed due to Tinkerbelle lines now that she and her friends are there. Just be sure to check the park hours schedule to determine this.
Also, smesmer, your DD 4 would do fine with rope drop as the changes have made it less hectic and they strictly maintain the crowd control. The running that used to happen is now a fast walk instead. My first trip with DH, DS, and DD in 1997 was different and I am glad we experienced those old rope drops, but I like what they are doing now much better.

My sons and I have been at rope drops in AK and MK at Tomorrow Land. I thought they were the greatest experiences! At the AK, they pulled a family that was coming to the rope drop to join in the performance. That family got to be the first family to ride the Safari ride.

We ate at the Crystal Palace at 8:00 when the park opened at 9:00. We got to walk in the park with hardly anyone there. Then, when we were finished eating, we walked over to Tomorrow land to ride Space Mountain. They had a small rope drop with only 10 people! My three sons along with the other family we were with got to throw confetti and dance with Stitch!

And the nicest part was the fact that we rode all of the rides with long wait times over and over again because no one was there! We went around Labor Day.

All very good suggestions. Thanks, guys!

I had no idea TSM was that popular! DHS is our first park, and the one my oldest daughter is most excited for (it'll be her b'day). If any day I can talk DH into going early, it'll be our first day.

I intentionally choose the week I did b/c it's the week after MLK day and as far as I know there are no big conventions that week (altho it is wedged between two).

One of the reasons it was so packed that week might have been that Super Bowl was in Tampa the previous Sunday. We went the last week in January last year and it was a little busier than normal, but I heard that lots of people went to the Super Bowl and then spent some time in Disney

Rope drop during that week will not be required except perhaps at DHS. If you can put in more than seven straight hours at any park and you close it you'll get in more "than a decent amount" of stuff!

Easily.:thumbsup2

We have been 4 times in late Jan. It is one of our favorite times to go. The wait times for rides are much less than other times of the year when we have been. We find the crowds to be low during this time of year. We always use Tour Guide Mike for every trip and Jan. is no different. We are not ones to go to EMH mornings or nights so I feel we avoid crowds that way too. We try and get to the parks around opening time no matter when we go. The temps can be all over the place though. We always start out with light jackets and usually take them off by noon and then need them again in the evenings. One year we needed gloves at night. Some days you can even wear shorts. So be prepared for the fluctuating temps. :goodvibes

If you are there at rope drop, you will be able to do more in the first 2-1/2 hours than you will for the entire rest of the day.
