January/February 2018 discounts, who else is in?

You know, in looking at availability, I really hope Disney held back a bunch of rooms, because otherwise, why would they bother with a discount? At least for my week, there is very little available, and almost none of it low cost rooms.
Agreed.

I'm not sure how this works, but economically speaking, there's little benefit to Disney to offer discount only rooms on sold out weeks, but it could benefit them to offer blocks of SPD since that's not clear to me it's actually a better deal than ala carting your trip.

We are booked at POFQ, but are watching for the discounts. If a great room only discount comes out, we are debating about switching to another mod or possibly upgrading to AKL. If we were to switch to another mod it would probably be POR (I just don't think we want to give up the boat ride to Disney Springs or to deal with the construction at CSR or CBR). But, you never know. If we could save a chunk of money by staying at CSR, maybe we would consider it.

I just can't decide how much money we would need to save to make a switch worthwhile. Anyone else debating something similar?

This may be a very freshman question, but I can't figure out why SPD is a better deal than RO. Is it based on whether you think the Dining Plan is financial good for your family/situation? For me, the cash in my pocket from RO seems like the way to go but maybe I'm missing something? (FYI we are two adults, two kids and one infant staying in AoA suites end of Jan.)

To effectively analyze it you need to compare the following:

1) Rack Room Cost
LESS Room Only Discount
PLUS Tickets (from your cheapest source...i.e. Undercover Tourist)
PLUS total expected out of pocket dining cost (can be estimated by looking at menus online and knowing what you'd order)

VS.

2) Rack Room Cost
PLUS Tickets (directly from Disney)
PLUS Dining Plan Cost
PLUS out of pocket Dining expenses (tips, meals not covered by dining plan, etc.)
LESS stay play dine savings (which typically is a % off the cost of the dining plan).

On the surface it can look like Room only should win but depending on your eating habits and family size the SPD can beat it (especially for larger families, families with most adults, and those staying at the cheapest resorts since the % off Room is less in that instance).

Everyone vacations differently. Dining is not a huge priority to us and we just don;t eat enough to make the dining plan worth it. I think they have smaller levels of dining plans now so I have not looked into that but I know the original plan was not worth it for our family and the RO discount was better.

Yes, RO could be better. It depends on the resort and your family makeup. We will probably do the dining plan. I could save a few hundred without it, but we'd get things with the plan we wouldn't buy otherwise (desserts, drinks that aren't water with our meals, and the refillable mugs). So, it's probably not worth it to me not to do the dining plan. Unless I can't get a decent discount- then I'll take the savings of a few hundred.

:tigger:And alcohol is included now starting 2018.:figment: DD (26) & I are going in February.....normally we wouldn't do the dining plan, but factoring in alcohol, we've decided to add it to this trip. So hoping to grab discount when they release tomorrow (oh please yes Disney powers).

Can anyone confirm whether mods would are QS or TS?

If a discount is offered tomorrow, does anyone have a guess as to what time it will be released? I may just have to be stuck to my computer all day.

Um.....apparently I missed this. Alcohol is going to be included? What? On which plans and what will be included?

Thank you. Heading over to the dinning plan section to read up. I am glad I saw this tonight. This might change if we do SPD or RO

It really depends on which is the better value for you. I stay in a value resort which normally means a 15% room discount. If I pay $150 for a night it's about a $22.50/night savings.

In comparison the DDP for my child and myself is about $100/day. If the SPD ends up being about a 40% discount as it has been in the past it will be about $40/night savings.

In my case the SPD discount will be a greater savings.

Each person needs to run their own numbers to see what works best for them but there are definitely times when the SPD discount is a bigger savings especially for value resorts (not sure about suites though as those rooms are often 2-3 times more expensive than a standard room)

Aha. Ok, that's a good way to compare it. Thanks!

I am in a similar situation only we are booked at POR. We booked a royal room hoping it would be discounted but I'm wondering what my back up plan should be if it's not a great discount. I agree about CSR and CBR construction.

My favorite is when club level rooms become cheaper than regular rooms- had that happen at the beach club a few years ago :)
Wow! Really? That would. W awesome! I'm hoping for an Epcot resort this trip so I'll be crossing my fingers!
