January 2014 discount watch!!

^ This. The cheapest points rental I find is $ 11 and it's usually not enough points for me since I need 11 nights worth. The basic I find for 11 nights at a DVC is like $ 3800 for 299 points.

We were looking and even though we only needed 7 nights its was crazy. If you're going to pay to rent, you might as well buy in because that's close to a down payment. Just my opinion. I'm happy with my moderate and sometimes deluxe rooms and discounts. :)

DVC owners have to pay a yearly maintenance fee that is $5. - $7. a point.

I'm renting for the 2nd time, a 2br @ bwv. We use about 230 points. That would be over $1, 200 a year for fees on top of the contract fee. That just doesn't seem worth it. Yes, it's annoying that you can't call about ur reservation when ur renting but if you buying ur locked into going every year. (I wish I could go every year)

We looked into buying. For GFV it would have been (based on 160 pts) $900 plus a year for yearly fees, plus the buy in which I think was around $20,000 (don't quote me I don't have the paperwork in front of me). My thought is, unless you're dead set on staying in villas, renting isn't worth it. You get no return on investment (tax deductions) and in terms of the actual buy in, that's 50 years of vacations. All I'm saying is... In my opinion renting isn't worth it because by the time you rent the points you could have paid for the rooms, meal plan and hopper passes. You also don't get the discounts and can't change your reservation. We looked into regular booking and rental and until we are buying in, I will stick with my regular bookings. In theory, if you book using rental points every year or even every other and do that 10 times over your lifetime you've paid for the 50 years of vacations if you bought in. From a financial standpoint, in my opinion, renting points (kind of like renting any real estate) does not make much sense.

Anyway, back to the when do the January discounts come out?!!!! -- impatiently waiting...

I guess it works for us because we do want to stay in a villa at the boardwalk and we don't want 50 years of vacations at Disney. I love Disney but there are to many other places I want to see.

Does anyone know if the Stay/Play/Dine deal in January excluded any resorts last year on the moderate level?? From what I remember they were all included but they were also only for certain level rooms at certain resorts like POFQ you could only book garden view or above. Just trying to plan so if anyone knows this for sure it would be a huge help!!

I don't know how you pulled that off unless you were going to pay the per night rate for the villa room. I looked into renting points and people wanted $12-$14 per point and depending on how many people that definitely wasn't saving us money...

Um, yes I was comparing it to paying the per night rate for a villa room. Apples to apples.

Amen! For those of us who go once or twice a decade, renting points makes perfect sense.

Planning a completely amazing (albeit short) surprise trip for our two kids between their 7th and 4th birthdays (his Jan 18 and hers Feb 4). We last went down in the fall when daughter was 4 and son was 20 months. Saw crowds are minimal this time of year and knowing my kids and their lack of patience, this is key to success. Planning for January 23 - 27/8 with 3/4 park days at WL bunk bed. Goal is for low key FUN. Cannot wait to pick the kids up from school and head right to the airport!! Debating RO and SPD now as we wait for the discount, but I should book the room now before the promotion is released? Yes? No?

I booked a RoomOnly already on a AAA discount (not through AAA just did a AAA discount myself). I figure if nothing comes out that fits my trip than I already have a room.

But if you book a room only and a package deal comes out you can not apply your RO deposit to a package, you have to book your package put down a deposit then cancel your RO and wait for a refund for that. They say it can take awhile but in Oct my refund showed up one week later. This also applies to the opposite. If you book a package and then later a RO discount comes out that you want to change too, you have to make a new reservation and pay a new deposit, then cancel the old and wait for that deposit to be credited back.

If you modify the same type of package than deposits can be transferred. RO or Rack Rate undiscounted can be modified to a RO discount. Undiscounted packages can be modified to Package deals (SDP or Free Dining, etc).

I was so excited to get Mickey mail today and even more excited to see that it was a RO PIN!!! ...for the same dates as the current GP promotion :sad2:

Guess I'll just wait for the winter GP offer in a month...

We were at the WL the first week of Feb and it turned out that a RO discount was a better deal than the SPD plan. Since your children are already going to be charged children's prices, the only discount is for the adults. But you'll have to crunch the numbers, to see what works best for your family.

We booked our room in July and then when the discounts came out in early October, they applied the discount to our existing reservation, probably because the resort wasn't full and there was availability.

RO saved us more last year than S/P/D. If anyone is aware, can you please if any resorts are specifically excluded from the 2014 offer?

Specifically interested in WL, but just a regular room not a Villa.

Thanks!

What is the AAA discount? Thanks!

It's a discount for members of American Automobile Association. The discount amount varies depending on resort, but it's 20% off POFQ for our dates in January. The discount amount may also vary based on the time of year as well. I'm not sure.
