January 2009. . . Calling all Snowbirds ~ Part V

Letthewookiein~ I too, need to look for luggage!!! I want a really good carry-on for me, and for my dd. She could fit all her stuff in it and I wouldn't have to check a bag for her. We paid to check 5 suitcases last time---but we packed a lot because it was January. Those jeans/pants take up some room!
I looked at the Vera Bradley carry-on, it has lots of extra storage space with little nooks/crannies...but I had a lady that carries her stuff tell me last week, that she wouldn't carry the luggage/carry-ons anymore. She said that she has had several people recently bring them back because they fell apart during travel! That's a lot of money for it to tear up that easily. she said she thought maybe they were filling them too full, but she really didn't know what the problem was. That made me nervous.
I like the red paisley carry-on by American Living, it's the cutest one, but, I am not really a red girl. Oh well, if I can't find anything else better that'll be what I get.Anybody else have any good luggage?

finished scrapbooking? Ha! I'm so far behind, I have two trips to do plus my girls' books!! I tend to do the trip books first - way more fun!!

I only have about 6 1/2 months til I can get my CDs!! I'm not thinking twice this time!

I thought twice and put the CD back in 2007, I made them all mine this trip!
Scrapbooking - :rotfl:I now have 2 trips and my DDs to get finished, well the 2009 isn't even started- actually I have the book- does that count? Funny thing is I have templates all planned out, photos printed, all i need to do is crop and paste- oh to find the time :sad2:
My goal is to get the Jan 2009 trip done before we leave for Jan 2010. Although I probably should scrapbook my son's 4th birthday and his Age 4 Album and my daughter's Age 1 Album. He turned 5 in April and she turned 2 in February....talk about being behind! I'm just more motivated to do the WDW Album:goodvibes
Sad news - the voice of Mickey Mouse has passed away. Wayne Allwine has voiced Mickey Mouse since 1977. He died of complications from diabetes at age 62.
:flower3:
His wife, Russi Taylor, is the voice of Minnie Mouse. How perfect!
Join me in a moment of silence...
It was so sweet that they were married. How sad. He was so young.:sad2:
We sold the house today. We actually sold it for more than asking price, so we are very excited and thankful. Did I mention we just put it on the market last Thursday? God is good!

We signed the execution contract (???) this afternoon and we should be closing at the end of June. We have no clue what we will do and we don't LOVE anything on the market right now, so I guess we will be at my parents a little longer.

I'll keep you all posted. At least I have something big to keep me busy instead of obsessing about ADR's all summer.:lmao:
Yeah for you!!!!:yay: I hope you find the perfect home for you, G and Belle!
OK, so January experts....what do I need to know about going to WDW in early January. We are looking at January 8th - 16th(hopefully). Are the Brazilian tour group really that bad? Should I bring ear plugs for my DS10 in case they start chanting in ques? What about packing? Are shorts totally out and I need to pack pants and coats? How are crowds?
We did layers. Like Shelly said the weather shifted dramatically overnight while we were there. One day we were in shorts and the next in jackets. Nights were chilly too. I tend to run cold so I was comfy in capri's and jeans with short sleeve shirts. DH wore shorts all week except for the last couple of days when it got colder.

We ran into the Brazilian tour groups at HS too. They were chanting and screaming really loudly in the Toy Story Mania line which is all enclosed and made it THAT much louder. It sent both my kids into tears holding their ears. My DS isn't autistic but is really sensitive to noise and it really sent him over the edge. He didn't even want to ride at that point. I think the combo of being in an enclosed crowded area and the noise was too much to handle. We had some nice people around us asking them to stop and they did. We had a few nasty looks from some of the Brazilian guys but a couple of the girls apologized. It wasn't one of our more memorable moments. Me holding a screaming 2 year old and DH holding a screaming 4 year old! I'd bring some ear plugs or whatever you think he may need to comfort him just in case.

Also, we were thinking about going to Universal for a day to check out the new Harry Potter section. HP is the only thing that can get me to loose time with the mouse and get me over to Universal. I tend to get motion sick on big roller coasters and my DH spends the day begging me and making me feel guilty about not going on them b/c of being afriad to get sick. I'm just thinking that January would be a bad time to check it out since it is suppose to open late this year. I think it will be way to crowded over there in January. Oh well, maybe I can plan a trip for 2011 to go to Universal and Disney. Depending on how many days we go for, I may change my mind and go ahead and go for one day.
I'm not sure if HP will be open by Jan or not. I heard it was pushed back to early 2010 but no exact date. I don't know if early 2010 means January or later. I've never had any interest in going to Universal but I'm a HP dork and would definitely go just for that.

Well I guess we'll have to wait and see on the Universal side trip then. I am almost as much of a HP dork and I am a Disney one. We take our boys to see every midnight showing of the movies, and then the next day they are "sick" from school. Actually DH and I need to get reading. We always like to read all of the books up to the one the newest movie is about. Since DH wants to read them at the same time that I do. Instead of having two copies of each book I read them outloud so we can "read" them at the same time. We do that anytime a new book came out too. By the time I finished reading Deathly Hallows (after reading all the others before it) I could barely talk.

I have a friend that I play World of Warcraft with that lives in Brazil. We've been talking b/c he want to practice his English for his Disney World trip sometime next year. He had always wanted to go to New York, but after hearing the way I talk about Disney World he wants to go there instead. I may have him teach me some portuguese to use on the trip.

Hopefully you all will have a great day. Mine is looking to be a great one. I had Chick-fil-A for breakfast, and in a couple of hours will be in a movie theater watching Christian Bale in the new Terminator movie.

:hug:I'm praying for you today!!!!

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family

:flower3:Meghan, sorry to hear about your Grandfather. Know that we are praying for your family---be careful in your travels.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Meghan--so sorry to hear about your grandfather. Condolences to you and your family. :grouphug:

Meghan- I'm sorry to hear about you Grandfather. Travel safely and hugs!

I'm so sorry Meghan! I hope that your happy memories of your grandfather will help you through the rough times.

Thank you all so much. Yesterday was a very hard day, but the weather was just gorgeous. My dad gave the eulogy (is that how it's spelled?) and it was just amazing. My dad has such a wonderful way with words.

In other news.....I cannot WAIT to buy some Disney cd's next month. I just have to get Wishes and I'd love Illuminations as well. Other than that, I don't really think we'll buy much on this trip. Madison wants to get into pin trading, so we've bought a few small lots on ebay. She's going to save up her money so she can buy some while we're down there as well.

Soleil- That is so awesome that you sold your house so quickly. :goodvibes When we bought our house, it had only been on the market for a week and we were the first people to come through and see it! The former owners must have felt what you're feeling right now.

This is me being COMPLETELY transparent. Please be nice back. :goodvibes I just need to vent.

In regards to selling our house - I'm really just sick to my stomach over it all. I'm worried that it's too good to be true (selling so soon) and I'm also a little sad, because it was our first home -too bad we have totally outgrown it. G is being wishy washy about buying something else because he will have a bigger mortgage to worry about. I'm terrified, too.

The last bit of the 20 year old in me is saying, "Growing up is scary.":sad2:

Since we will need to bring a mix of clothes I may have to go buy some new luggage. Darn it!! I know the horror, right?? If I can't convince my DH to let me get some Mickey Luggage, I found some really cute luggage at Sam Moon that is red with white dots that reminds me of Minnie Mouse.
I really want some new luggage, mostly because we're doing strictly carry-ons this next trip and I need a better one for myself and my DH.

Ok, so it looks like we'll have to make sure to get to DHS way before EMH rope drop to make sure to make sure we are close to the front. I've been kicking around the idea of getting a treadmill to help loose weight for the trip. It looks like I really need one to get conditioned to be the family TSMM fastpass runner. Honestly, if it weren't for TSMM (and RnRc) we would just skip DHS this trip.

Also, we were thinking about going to Universal for a day to check out the new Harry Potter section. HP is the only thing that can get me to loose time with the mouse and get me over to Universal.

I think if you get there during EMH you'll probably be fine. I don't think the Brazilian tour groups were staying on the property.

I agree that growing up is scary! Just take a couple of deep breaths. I'm sure your worries are just because it's a whole new situation for you.
I've been going through growing up anxiety a lot lately, and I just have to remind myself that I'm intelligent, and as long as I properly think through my decisions I should be just fine.

OH, you sweet thing! It's so hard to make such a big change. Just take your time and I'm sure you and G will know what the right move (pun intended) is for you. It's all so exciting and scary, isn't it? I still have nostalgia for our first home too, even though it was DH's first and it was a mobile home!!! But it was where we started out, dumpy as it was!! And we were only there together 6 months! Then we moved in with my parents while we finished building our house that we're in now (it's been 11 years!) Have faith, it will all work out fine!

The first thing we bought was a mobile home too. I miss it because it was our first home to purchase and my first sweet baby came home from the hospital there, learned to walk and talk there. I STILL miss it!! But, we've came a looooong way since then. Things like this are bitter sweet, but the Lord knows what you need. Just have faith and keep praying about it...You will know when you come to the right thing!!!!

I agree growing up is scary which is why I put it off as much as possible. However when I have to be an adult, and I'm unsure of what to do, I remember a quote my DH told me one time. "Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amatuers built the arc, professionals built the Titanic." I know bigger house payments stink. We went from paying about $800 monthly to almost $1,400. However if it's for a home and a neighborhood that you both truly love (and you can afford it), it will be more than worth it.

The first thing we bought was a mobile home too. I miss it because it was our first home to purchase and my first sweet baby came home from the hospital there, learned to walk and talk there. Ours was as well. We didn't think we could get a loan for a regular home when we got ours. We were 20, and had very little credit. When we bought the mobile home, the guy that sold it to use talked us out of the extra insurance that covers payments if you are unable to work b/c of illness. He said he used to sell it, and it was a waste of money. Well lets just say for him it's a good thing there are laws that project him from me hurting him. At the time we bought the house I was pregnant. A month later I was in the hopital and the doctor said it was a high possibility that my baby and I could be dead by midnight. My blood pressure was really high. It was something like 236-ish/148-ish, and I had toxemia. Now we are in a rental house and I go by the old house just to see if our tree that we planted it still there. For us it was an easy choice to get out of the house b/c the stove, one toilet, and A.C./Heater (which the repair guy said should have burned the house down b/c all the wires caught fire) didn't work and there was water damage and what looked like black mold. I love the house we've been renting for the last 3 years. We actually have a little more room than we use. We are a family of 4 living in a 4 bedroom house with an office. My DH gets his room to play World of Warcraft in and the boys have a playroom with all their toys, Xbox, Xbox360, wii, and t.v. for cartoons. I just wish the monthly payments were less, but in our school district it's hard to get anything close to $1,000 (which is where DH would like out payments to be).

Growing up is definately scary! We lived with my parents for 2 years after we got married. When we moved into our apt, I cried for days! Now, we only moved 5 minutes from my parents, but I had never been away from them. I lived at home while I went to college. It was a very hard adjustment for me. Then, when we bought our first house last June, I was an emotional wreck again. We definately needed the space, but it was hard for me again. I know you'll be just fine.

:hug:Soleil, you have only written what so many of us think! Purchasing a home is scary and exciting all rolled into one!
The trials and triblations of life and growing up can be very emotional. I think I have too many stories to share! If you ever need to vent or talk outside of the boards, PM me! I'll be happy to listen and share if needed!

Thanks everyone! Gosh, I love ya'll so much!:grouphug: I'm so happy that one year later we are all still together!

Our townhouse is a nice place, great location, great neighbors (an FBI agent:lmao:)....... it was just too small.

We have so many amazing memories. Our first kiss, falling in love, coming home after the Honeymoon to our home, decorating it up to suprise G when he came home from touring (he was a pro-musician pre-baby), putting together the baby nursey and bringing her home to it. Oh, I could cry just thinking about.

On to the next chapter.... I'm glad you guys are here to cheer me on.

BTW.... I just talked to Jenjolt on the phone. She's in DTD right now buying my princess a Belle dress. (I'm JEALOUS!!!!)

Can you guys say a prayer for her? She's having a rough time in life and sounds pretty bummed. She really needs a vacation and I want her to enjoy it.:goodvibes

Soleil~
Thanks for the update on Jen... I have been thinking about her. I will definitely pray for her.

Totally OT: Ya'll are gonna think we are crazy. I thought we decided to not go on vacation until the next Disney trip. WELL.....we are back on the New York City thing. Mike's business is being tremendously blessed right now. God is good!!!:worship: If we don't go somewhere by mid-June there will be no way we can go anywhere til dec/jan. We don't usually take the summer trips, but we really need some time away as a family. those of you with teens will understand. Saylor just turned 13 in Dec, and he is an AWESOME kid!!! I know he will be gone before I can turn around. He is at the age, he really needs to be with his dad. Mike is good about taking them to work with him when he can! but, we just need "family time". Not family/work time. He is an unbelievable dad--I am soooo blessed to have him. He enjoys time with us more than any hubby/dad I personally know. He also needs a break---we are both super busy, self-employed, homeschooling, and we both work in ministry at church. So, we need a small bit of time away. I love my Disney trips, but we want to go where we can see/do some things without a totally planned itenerary!!! So, we are looking at NYC!!!

main concern..where do we stay? We are thinking times square area--not sure. Heard the marriott marquiess is fab and $$friendly. What are (besides the statue of liberty) ya'lls top 3-5 must sees? I want to see MP on Broadway, and run Gracie to the AmericanG store. Kipp wants to go to the Museum. Fire away ladies-----I would like to go around the 10th or so of June.

My parents recently spent some time in NYC and they said their fave thing was hanging out in Central Park! They went to the Zoo and strolled around and ate ice cream! They also paid a visit to Ground Zero! :)

Soleil-congrats on selling the house! As a homeowner, I know exactly how you feel. Our first house was very small, but it was adorable!! We had it decoraged just perfect and had a very "cottage-y" feel to it! I didn't want to have a baby in that house (although it had two bedrooms, you had to walk thru the 2nd to get to the bathroom-not good for a nursery)! We were there for 3 1/2 years and hubby said we could either get pregnant or buy a new home. I voted home. At that time the interest rates dropped and we were actually able to build a small 3 bed/2 bath house in a great subdivision, so we lived with his mom for the three months for it to be built. Two weeks before we closed I found out I was pregnant with Drew...oops! :confused3 7+ years later we're still there and growing out of it. But both of my babies were born there and it's hard!!

Now, as a Realtor, I tell everyone, pray for the best but prepare yourself for snags. But even when those snags happen, the professionals should be able to work together to get them ironed out!! God is great and He will guide you thru this!!

We just stayed at the Hilton Grand Garden at the beginning of May. It's about a block off Times Square, has friendly staff, it's own parking garage (right next door), is in walking distance to everything, and with our AAA discount the room (King size bed and huge for the City) was only $136 (Total! For the night we were there). The Disney Store isn't a very far walk (close to Trump Tower) and every other site you could wish to see is literally a stones throw away. If you don't mind walking, you can get to everything with out so much as taking a cab. We have new favorite hotel in NYC.:thumbsup2

I've been to NYC once and I was 15 years old on a school trip. I LOVED going to Ellis Island. So much history! We also went to the Empire State building and it was awesome! We didn't do a whole lot because we were there to perform. We stayed in NJ, so I have no idea about hotel room!

I have never been to NYC- but would love to! That hotel sounds great that it is so close!

We're heading north to our trailer. yep we're trailer folk ;) Last year we got our park model travel trailer. DD loves going up and exploring the woods!
This weekend I plan to relax and read! I'm hoping the weather will be nice so we can enjoy the beach! Count down is on now - only a few more hours! It's not disney, but it's a nice little oasis.:beach:

Aww... poor Jen!

As for New York... I've only stayed in a hotel there once, and it was for a choir field trip, so I really don't remember which one. It was somewhere only a couple blocks from Times Square. Other than that I've only stayed at my Aunt's in Queens.

I love Times Square. It's just so much fun to be able to walk through all the cool stores in there. The last time I went I got to ride the Ferris Wheel in the Toy'sR'US, which was so much fun for me. The Hershey Store is also really fun, especially since it smells like chocolate.
See about getting some Broadway tickets while you're there. You could also consider trying the lottery. I've had friends that have gotten to see Wicked for cheap that way.

As for other attractions...most things cost money, so I'd definitely check with your family to see what they definitely want to do, and plan accordingly. We did the Empire State Building, the ferry between Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty on our choir trip, and both were fun (though it was cold at the Empire State Building).
I particularly enjoyed Ellis Island.

However, when Logan and I stopped in NYC on our way to Prague we just wandered around and took pictures. We WALKED a lot. The only thing we paid to do was the Ferris Wheel at the ToysRUs and some subway tickets.

They also have CityPass, so if you're planning on doing a lot of things, then that's a way to save some money.

Thanks ladies!! I knew I could get a few tips froms you!!!
Drakes..I miss our camper! It's so cozy and fun to pack up and go! I would love to rent one and just spend weeks going up the East coast and back. Wouldn't that be awesome!!! I love the little people coming out of the little RV!! Ha!!!
