January 2009. . . Calling all Snowbirds ~ Part III !!!

Soleil there is a cool thread over on the theme park attraction site called "fashionistas even at Disney World" I immediately thought of you!! LOLprincess: Its pretty funny check it out

On the phone again with the CMs at Disney...going to keep trying to upgrade if I can...Phillip totally Okayed it LOL!! I'm not quite sure what the music I'm listening to is right now...I think it might be Soarin' ...hmmmm....I wish it was The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast LOL!!!

Shawna...congrats on the good deal on the airline tickets!! That is fabulous!!!

I hope you get something!

We were not our usual chatty selves today I see. I'm pretty tired from my very busy day. I'm not looking forward to working tomorrow, but I'll survive. I hope that you've all had a great day! Good night!

I think everybody got their codes (or lack thereof) and are now focusing on other things. I know I am... my course work and house work has been slacking lately...:rolleyes1

It was a weird day for me today Snowbirds.

My troublesome co-worker came in today and handed in her letter of resignation. I was shocked. She quit as of yesterday. No notice, nothing. Not very professional in my mind. Supposedly she has 32 years experience in my profession but I don't think it showed. Anyway, this means more overtime for me and my co-workers. It does make you think it wasn't us, when every co-worker, when they heard the news was relieved and did a happy dance.

It is such a relief knowing that one trouble is now gone but you become stressed again when you realize the workload has just become larger. Oh well, only a month and half until our other co-worker returns from maternity leave.

With every over time hour I will be looking at it as extra $ for Disney. Our Canadian $ did a nose dive, which is not great for my family. We have been putting off paying for our trip, as our travel agent thinks a deal may be coming and I don't want to cause her extra work by redoing something. Does any Snowbird know how much trouble it is if you have made payments on your package to then switch something? I should go email her this question. I know I will feel 100% better when it is all paid for and I know we will be officially going to Disney. Right now, I don't feel this way, as it is only a deposit.

I hope everyone has a great day tomorrow. My mom is getting me really worried, telling me that it looks like a large recession may be coming our way. I hope not. I would think my job is pretty much secured but my DH may not be so lucky. Let's all hope everything gets much better. Sorry if I brought anyone into a sour mood.

Have a good night tonight.

Remmy

If it's before your 45 day mark, then they'll give you a refund within 10-14 business days. If it's after your 45 day mark and you would like to apply a code, then you have to pay a $50 fee (I think it's $50) However, I don't think they usually release discounts for times within the 45 day mark.

Sarah and Kayte, hope tomorrow goes well for both of you, and you both have speedy recoveries.

As for me, I haven't been around to much...DH hit me with I am about to be unemployed. He is the mayor breadwinner in our house. I teach plus work a part time job. Not enough to support our family of five that is for sure. My oldest is in the middle of filling out college applications, and I have twins who are 12. Christmas is coming up and thank goodness I am almost done and it is paid for in full, no credit. My trips are paid in full, so most of it is non refundable, so we are going.

The thing is DH is a proud man. Last time he was unemployed he was out of work for 18 months. He would not take any job that did not have a title. He will not work more than one job. He won't work one job that pays him less than unemployment and two jobs like I have is out of the question. He is to proud to work a menial job. I think this maybe the final blow to our marriage. It almost killed us last time, we came within weeks of losing our home and at the time my kids were 3 and 8. I am a wreck to say the least.

Today I signed up to every survey site known to man. I know he is home, but other than looking at Monster.com or the paper, he will do nothing else, but complain.

I have been feeling sick to my stomach since yesterday. I feel awful...

Yes, Jen I will be there with my crew at midnight :) I hope others join us :)

Aww man... I'm soo sorry! Maybe he'll back away from his pride and step up and take any job this time?

I hope a great opportunity comes up for him...

 and prayers for your family. I don't know what else to say other than I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason, it may take a while for us to figure out what those reasons are, but we do eventually.

Hugs to all the snowbirds who need it today- health reasons, work situations, and unfortunate economic reasons.

I'm getting really worried about the economic situation we are headed for and I even catch myself wondering if going to Disney is the right thing to do at this time. I really want to enjoy a worry free week of magic with my family. And who knows what tomorrow may bring- I don't want to look back and regret not going. This may be the last trip with my parents and I want my children (and me) to have those memories and pictures to look back at one day.

I think you just stated why you need to go. My family can't really afford to go on most of the trips that we do, but we need to. They are some of my greatest memories. Most of our nicknames for each other have come from our trips (I'm fire eel from a ride on the tea cups actually). I've said it before, and I'll repeat it, the laughter and memories can never be replaced.

Glo, I agree 100% I hope your husband sees the situation he is putting you in and really surprises you by stepping up to the plate with the job-hunt. I am praying for you! There's a little hug from me to you!! Let us know how you are doing--we are here for you!!

Hello Snowbirds! Meagan here and I'd love to jump in on the fun. :goodvibes

First, let me say :welcome: to the Snowbirds and YEA for another Meghan!

Well I probably won't be around much this afternoon. So I just wanted to say Good Luck to Sarah and Kayte tomorrow. The Snowbirds will keep you lifted up in prayer. Check in when you can. Get lots of rest for a speedy recovery! :goodvibes

I was thinking that since all this code business is over that it's getting to be time to start thinking about some Snowbird Meets! :cool1: I'm not sure what all everyone has talked about or planned for the beginning of the month, but I know that there has been a lot of talk and PM's about some meets later in the month. . . Right now we are looking at possibly meeting for the 3:00 parade at DHS on Jan 22nd. . . And possibly sometime in the afternoon at DTD on the 25th. . . There was some talk about a CBR meet. . . And an All Star meet. . . Nothing is set in stone yet. . . If there are anymore meets being set up please let me know and I will get a list going. It would be nice if we had at least one for every week in January so that everyone has a chance to go to one if they want to. And if you don't feel comfortable going to one that's totally understandable too. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate or time consuming (I know we all have schedules we like to keep :) ), just enough time to stop and say hello and maybe take a few pictures.

Please give me your thoughts and I will get to work on that tomorrow! :goodvibes

I can't wait for some Snowbird meets! I think that Shawna and I are going to try to meet up at DTD on the evening of Jan 25th. Right Shawna?? :) Of course, the more the merrier! I know that I have some ressies that coincide with some Snowbirds as well. I have to start keeping better track of these things.

It is a yucky, overcast and rainy day here in the B-lo (Buffalo). I had to work today and it was actually pretty fun. We were working really hard and my manager gave us all $10 itunes cards! Oh yeah! I have dance practice tonight, so I'm just relaxing and catching up with all of you right now.

Sarah I'm here I just haven't had much time to post. Tues was crazy w/ pre-op stuff & then I've been trying to get the shop as up to date & ready for my help as I can while I'm off. But good news is they pushed my time earlier so less time with out food. But I still have to do the ALL LIQUID diet today no real food. Thankfully Mc Donalds now has Egg Nog shakes my mommy is being nice & bringing me one for lunch.

What a nice mommy you have! And Egg Nog milkshakes - yumm...I'll definitely be visiting MickeyD's in the near future....

Sarah and Kayte, hope tomorrow goes well for both of you, and you both have speedy recoveries.

Hey Disney Friends!

My name is Kelley and we're going to Disney in Jan 09!! We're getting very excited. It's actually a "last minute" trip planned and I'm starting to panic!

We are staying in a timeshare in Lake Buena Vista, so we won't actually be on Disney this time. This is my son's first trip though and he's very excited. (He'll be 3 in December).

I still have SO much planning to do so any advice would be great!! Please give me any advice or direct me to some great resources! Couple questions though:

I keep hearing about discount codes for theme park tickets? We haven't purchased our tickets yet and I wondering if we could find some discounts.

How many meals to you make reservations for? I'm trying to decide if I should make reservations for more than one meal a day or leave some plans open.

I feel like I'm so far behind, but looking forward to meeting each of you and getting lots of ideas!!

Evening snowbirds. I did not get to dis at work today that much. I usually keep it down the bottom and read all day anymore. But I had some field work to do.

Catch up trees I won't decorate our house for Christmas till after Morgan's birthday I don't want to get those two "mixed up" I also won't do the one present for both thing to her either. So we decorate the house after Dec 7th. The shop has to be done before thanksgiving. I honestly think the merchants in town would come after you with pitchforks if you didn't. We have tons of holiday stuff starting the day after.

Will catch up more later gotta go to do paperwork & write out bills.
I love egg nog milk shakes! Hope everything goes well for you tommorow Kate. You will be in my thoughts. FYI- I will be sending an email on saturday about the photoshare. I know I wont here back from you in a bit, and that is ok. The one person has still not got back to me. I am looking for someone else to fill her spot.
Good morning Snowbirds! :goodvibes

It was a long morning of meetings at the school this morning. I can't believe it's time for me to schedule and call all the volunteers for Santa's Workshop already. :santa: I guess time is flying by!!!! :cool1:

I have to take DS7 to the pediatric ophthalmologist this afternoon.
Santa workshop, I miss helping out with that. It will be two years since I ran one. We did items from the dollar store. We only charged a dollar and the PTL footed the tax. It made it so much more reasonable for the children. Shopping for Christmas in August in the back room of the dollar tree store was priceless.

Sarah and Kayte, hope tomorrow goes well for both of you, and you both have speedy recoveries.

Glo, sending you hugs dear. My sister goes through the same thing with my BIL. He is now 56. He left THIS job now (he is a certified welder) because a foreign company bought the company. So he just quit. I was like :scared1:.
I send you pixie dust dear, I could not put up with it. DH said last night if he has to he will go back to being a mechanic, working on the machines. He says he misses working with hands and hates pushing papers, and numbers and all the stress that goes with his job title now. He had goals to meet and is meeting them, but now no raise for all his hard work.:headache: :sad2:

I'm at 53 days!!!! Let's have a PARTY:cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:     :yay: :yay: :dance3: :dance3: :cheer2: :cheer2:

I got an A+ on my Disney paper! My professor even wants a copy for his files.
I thought it wasn't very good. I was so stressed last week while I was working on it, and I was worried that he'd know.

Now I'm waiting for the rest of my group to arrive so we can work on the visual part of a group project. I'm going to be so happy when this group project is over....

Hi Kelley:goodvibes :welcome:
I would only make one ressie a day for a meal. It takes up much of your time.
Since you have a small DS, it could be too much for him also.
I have not heard of any codes for tickets, but I think you can purchase them online.

That is a good Mom. She won’t have all the birthday hang ups I have from my Christmas/birthday gifts. :lmao: My Mom tried, and we always did something special. I did not have parties because only a couple would be able to come. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WITH A DECEMBER BIRTHDAY WORST THING TO DO IS GIVE THEM A GIFT AND SAY HERE IS YOUR CHRISTMAS BIRTHDAY GIFT!EVEN WORST WRAP A BIRTHDAY GIFT IN CHRISTMAS PAPER!
Really, I am over it all. :cool2:

Disney usually doesn't release discounts for their tickets, but the current discount for next year is Buy 4, Get 3 Free. However, you have to be staying in a Disney resort to take advantage of the offer. There are a few vendors that sell discounted tickets though.

As far as ADRs go I've never been in January before, so I have no idea if they'll be needed or not. However, I made an ADR for every day of my trip, 10 total. I would have done more, but couldn't justify the cost. We're on the Dining Plan though, so we'll definitely use all the TS credits.
Think about how your family eats. If you think that you'll sit down to 2 meals a day, then by all means get ADRs for them. If you wake up that morning and decide you'd rather eat somewhere else, then you can call and cancel.
Also, I only wanted to schedule 1 meal a day, because I'm not sure exactly where we'll be every day. I have a good idea, but I didn't want to schedule every meal, and then realize we didn't get up early enough for breakfast, and were out of the parks by dinner time.
I scheduled a variety of meals as well. I have 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 4 dinners.

Remmy, I was watching the Canadian $ as well :scared1: We're still going because I spent far too much time travelling with work this summer, my family deserves this time. We're penny pinching and I am putting in the overtime. Every cent of overtime goes down on this trip! Appreciate it and it will make you a better person. :goodvibes I don;t think you'll have any trouble doing that from what I can tell about you already.

Hi Kelley, :welcome: to the snowbirds!!

There are places to order park tickets at a discount, but most of the package offers Disney has are for when you are staying on site. I have heard Undercover Tourist is a good place to get tickets. Maybe someone else has details.
We don't make too many reservations. I hate to be forced to be somewhere at a specific time. One idea is if you want character meals, is to do a dinner the night you arrive, especially if it is not in the park, such as Chef Mickeys so you don't use a park ticket that day. We like to do a breakfast the day we leave. We have done Chef Mickey's and this trip are doing Ohana. This year we are going on the 4 day cruise right after, so that Sunday morning, we eat breakfast and check out and head to the port. Your son would probably enjoy some character meals. Those are the type of things you need to make reservations for. We don't do a lot of table service meals, so we only have a few ADRs.
Any time you think of any other questions, just hop on the boards! There's always someone here with an answer! :)
Good luck!

My DDs birthday is on Dec 22, so can't really wait that long to decorate for Christmas ;) , but luckily for us by the time her birthday comes around it's HOT and brunch pool parties are the way to go - so I just make sure I don't put Chrissie Decs up under the patio by the pool so we can decorate that with balloons etc. for DDs birthday. We also try to have her party on her actual birthday each year - she knows some of her friends won't be there as it's 1 week into our 6 week School Holidays, but a surprising number are still around and we have a blast! It's actually a nice 'break' from :santa: for a day. Though this year she'll have her party early as we'll be flying to WDW on her birthday. (She's lucky in a way because we jump the date-line on the way over and she'll have a 39 hour birthday! BTW we NEVER combine presents, and have warned the family not to either!!!

Well I probably won't be around much this afternoon. So I just wanted to say Good Luck to Sarah and Kayte tomorrow. The Snowbirds will keep you lifted up in prayer. Check in when you can. Get lots of rest for a speedy recovery! :goodvibes

Ditto from me too - I hope you have wonderful families to 'pamper' you with love, care and attention as you recover.

Sarah and Kayte, hope tomorrow goes well for both of you, and you both have speedy recoveries.

As for me, I haven't been around to much...DH hit me with I am about to be unemployed... ... I feel awful...

Big  coming your way, hopefully he'll come around and realise the value of his loving DW & family is worth more than his pride. In the mean time, I hope thoughts of ::MickeyMo and pixiedust: bring a smile to your face.

How many meals to you make reservations for? I'm trying to decide if I should make reservations for more than one meal a day or leave some plans open.

Welcome Kelley - you'll get heaps of help here - I'm not one of the 'chatty' snowbirds but I still try and keep up with them as they've passed on some great hints/tips & info. Keep an eye out for Mama Snowbird's menu of the day - I know I've seen a few menus that made me think YUM, but wouldn't have condiered looking at if they weren't posted here.

As for discount park tickets - only through discount wholesalers like undercover tourist - not much of a discount, but every little bit helps!

Now for meals... Try and get a rough idea of where you'll be each day to know what your options are, (check out the menus here on the DIS or on allears.net), then make your ADRs ASAP - have a few options available as I would think TS restaurants would be filling up fast this close to your travel dates. My ADRs were made way back at the 10 day mark, but I wanted a couple of 'tricky' ones - like meals in Epcot on NYE, and CRT lunch on our last day. We're not doing DDP, but are there for over 2 weeks, and have 12 ADRs (2 on NYE, one Fantasmic package) - but we're trying to do all that we can as it's very unlikely we'll ever get back to WDW (the airfares from Aus to the East Coast of the US are pretty steep!). At most of the TS meals, we'll be sharing meals - so we can sample more menu items, save $$ and because the portions seem sooooo big.
