Hi all - I posted a quick question on the official January marathon thread, but I don't want it getting lost in the enormity of the post, so - here's my question!

Is there any way I can surprise DH on his birthday while he's running the half-marathon?

I'm definitely going to make a poster, but I didn't know if it could be announced or I could get fellow spectators to help me out...

Any ideas?

The key is to be someplace that won't have huge crowds. I would recommend somewhere along the road that runs past the Grand Floridian and Poly. At that point the runners are heading into a section that has little crowd support and no real entertainment to distract you until you reach Epcot for the last half mile.

Because there are so few people there you can find a spot that you will stand out so your husband can spot you. Depending on how quick you husband is there is also a good chance he will no longer be running in a large crowd so it would also be easy to spot him.

Jumping in to subscribe because my DH turns 40 the day of the half and I'm struggling to come up with good ideas! I was thinking of getting a shirt printed with his birthday info on the back so other runners could wish him a happy 40th.

Thanks! We're staying at the Poly, so I was planning on being around that area anyway.

I was thinking of that, too, but I wasn't sure if he'd wear the shirt - he likes the tighter fitting running shirts...

If you are going to get him a shirt to race in on that day...two things: Let him pick out the actual shirt. He may have a strong preference about what he likes. And secondly, you'll have to give it to him a few weeks before so he can do some long runs in it. The rule is: Nothing - NOTHING - new on race day. You don't want him to find out at mile 5 that his new birthday shirt chafes, KWIM??

Great points, Judy! I was planning on giving it to him a week or two before so he could get one long run out of the way wearing it. Now the question is, where can I get a custom-printed tech shirt (UA or similar) that won't break the bank?

My hubby nixed the running shirt... He said, "It IS my birthday, you know - so I should have some say on this..."

However, before I got the no-go, I looked up some places...

There's always www.zazzle.com, but I'm not sure about the quality of their running shirts... (I've gotten stuff printed there before, and it's ok.)

I also found a place called www.runningbanana.com that starts with white running shirts, and dyes them (instead of printing or screening). Those are between $30-$40 per shirt.

Hope that helps!

ETA - I also quickly designed a tshirt that says "Running 'round the World on my birthday!" (that has a picture of Mickey walking/running with presents below the text). If you want, I can send it to you. (I can post it once I get home.)
