I recently purchased two 30" by 60" paintings from Home Goods by Janet Barosa. They are two really pretty abstract landscapes entitled "Rich Autumn" and "Distant Path". I love them both, but now that they are home and hung on the wall their very glossy finish shows imperfections on the surfaces of both paintings. Does anyone own these? I assume that since they're from Home Goods they are mass produced. Should I assume the finish is part of the look of the painting and learn to live with it? I just wondered because when sunlight is streaming in the room and shining directly on the paintings the finish kind of drives me nuts. But I love them otherwise...

Hello,
I have bought a painting from this same artist also entitled "Birch BlurI". The finish of your paintiungs must be the same as mine meaning a shiny or what you call an "acrylic finish". The runnings on such paintings are normal and considered beautiful. I have bought another painting with the same technique and much more expensive. It have the same so-called imperfections or runnings.

What do you mean by imperfections? They are abstracts. As such there are no "imperfections." However, since the original design was probably licensed so copies could be made in mass production by factory workers cranking them out, there may well be "imperfections" which is why they are being sold at such a retailer.

I'd have to know what imperfections you are talking about. If it is that the top coat, clear finish is runny or drippy or uneven and you are sure the painting is an acrylic painting and not oil, you may be able to just add on a clear acrylic matte medium or varnish and even out the drips.

You could alternately, lightly sand the top coat of varnish with a very fine grit sandpaper, concentrating on the drips and then add a new coat of clear varnish. Try a semi-gloss. Golden Artist paints are professional grade artist quality paints, mediums & varnishes.

An oil painting would require a different product for a varnish.
