Staying at Ft. Wilderness cabins for the first time.

January 10-11

We got up early, packed up the car, and headed out. No one ever looks forward to the ride home…but especially when you know you have like 24 hours of driving ahead of you. The ride seemed uneventful, but LONG. Somewhere in central Georgia I started getting sick with a snuffy nose, headache, and itchy throat. By the time we made it to Chattanooga, TN I was in a full-blown cold. OK, I guess it was my turn!

The hotel was really nice. We stayed in a Staybridge Suite. Our room had a mini kitchen with a full fridge, dishwasher, complete set of dishes, cooking utensils, cups, etc, a 2 burner stove top. It also had a bedroom and bathroom that closed off from the rest of the suite. This was a pretty nice room for all of us! DH took the kids down to the pool and I rested.

We got up and had the free breakfast that was pretty good. They had the usual bagels and donuts, but also scrambled eggs, ham, waffles, yogurt, cereal, etc. It was pretty good (especially for free).

All morning long I was watching the Weather Channel. They talked about the awful driving conditions coming that day in Illinois and Indiana. We had to decide which way to go: up I-65 through Indiana, or up I-57 through Illinois. The weather channel’s maps looked worse over Indiana, so I suggested to dh to go up through Illinois.

Driving through Tennessee and Kentucky were a breeze. We then started going through Illinois. It was getting rainy and every 100 miles the temp seemed to drop about 10 degrees. It was still ok until we got to around Champaign (about 2 hours from home). The fog was so thick it was scary. Dh (aka Speed Racer) was still doing like 80mph. I was in the back row of the minivan watching a movie with dd17 so I didn’t notice the fog and dh’s speeding right away. I started screaming at him to slow down. He finally did. The next morning I was watching the news report about a huge accident in Northern Indiana that night. It was from the thick fog and it was something like 30+ cars/trucks involved. Several people even died! OMG!

We didn’t notice any snow until we got North of Kankakee (1 hour from home). The snow wasn’t bad at home, though it wasn’t that cold (only about 35 degrees) so I’m sure lots of it melted already during the day. It was really good to be home and I thought the dog was going to jump through the window when he saw us. My MIL came over a few times a day to take care of the pets and she said the first couple of days, the dog wouldn’t come out from behind the couch (awwww).

It was about 7pm when we got home and dh quickly unpacked everything. The kids had to get to school the next day, though I let the little ones stay home.

Even though it seems lots of things went wrong, I really enjoyed the trip so much! I’m planning another trip soon for just me, dd6, and ds4 (though they’ll be 7 and 5 by then). But I don’t know if I could go away to WDW without the rest of the family.

I hope you enjoyed reading my trip report!

"Only"? I visited Chicago in September. LOVED IT! I was ready to move up there. You just reminded me why I never could! I really enjoyed your reports. I used to hate it when my family wrecked my itinerary too. Now they're almost grown up and I wish I had them back! You're going to have a blast with just the little ones.

It was a great report, Mary! I'm glad you made it home safely. Your poor dog, I'll bet he was glad to see you all. I'm told our cat stayed hidden under the furniture at my in-law's the whole time we were gone. I thought she would enjoy a break from the kids.

I enjoyed your trip reports. Makes me wish we were going sooner.

Great report. Thanks. Nice to read about a family rolling with the punches and still having a good trip.

Even though your very detailed plan went down the tube remember how much fun it was to plan it. Thanks for a great report.

I really enjoyed your trip report. Thanks for taking the time to share. We live in SW Michigan and try to go to WDW every year. We drive and tow our pop-up camper and stay at Ft Wilderness.

My kids are now 19 & 20 and both in separate colleges with different spring breaks ... my DH and I will drive down for 2 weeks and then the kids will fly down to spend their break with us. I did have to beg my DS because he says he's too old for WDW and I told him he could just relax by the pool!!! He finally agreed to go.

My DD is anxious to go (she's a Disney nut too) and come to find out, the guy she has just started dating will be at WDW the same time with some of his friends. We still have a few weeks to go, so I'll see if we have any campsite visitors!!!

In spite of all the illness, it does sound you had fun. Thanks for sharing your report.

Your reports were so fun to read. A reality of what really goes on during a WDW trip. You are a true trooper making the best of everything. I would do Disney with you anytime! You are my kind of traveler.

Glad you and your family made it home in one piece, Mary. I enjoyed reading your report. Kinda suspensful wondering who's going to get sick next and if the older girls will get lost. My 10yo granddaughter is anxious for the day that I just turn her loose in WDW...she's in for a long wait!LOL

I enjoyed your reports. I agree about the concept of "no more roadtrips"! DH has vowed never to drive further than 400 miles with our children again! Glad you had fun in spite of a few setbacks.

I really enjoyed your trip report. Thank you for sharing. :D Would you go to WDW during that time of the year again? How were the crowds? It sounds like the weather was very nice. Thanks again for the great reports!

Great report Mary, I enjoyed it. Although you plan and plan, it's nice to be flexable, as you found out! LOL... things happen, and you just rolled with it.

Seems your DH is that "typical" Illinois driver, huh? ;) j/k. We Wisconsinites know how THAT goes! Hehehe!!!

Thanks for the great trip report, Mary. I enjoyed reading about your adventures, as we will be driving down from Boston in April. We usually fly, but the spring break airfares were out of control. Hope our kids (12 and 10) are as good in the car as yours were!

Thanks for sharing!!

It truly sounds like everyone had a nice time. There was freedom for everyone to do their 'own' thing, but family time, too. :) Glad you made it home safe! Great trip report! :)
