Jamie Lynn Spears - 16 and Pregnant

I see major blame in the father. This is basically child sexual assault. I'm surprised that in some states it would be legal for him to have sex with a 15 or 16 yo. In a lot of states he would be considered a sex offender, for life. Wasn't there that major case a few months back with two HS kids about the same age and the young man was sentenced to something like 20 years? And that was consensual. Why is this different? I'm not trying to make this guy out to be a sex offender, but, yeah, now that I think about it, I am. Shame on her, but more shame on him. She's a kid. He is old enough to know better.

Reading this thread from end to start...if we're thinking of the same case, he was recently let go, I believe, b/c they changed the law shortly after he was sentenced, and after years of appeals they decided to let it be retroactive. If I recall correctly. That basically two teenagers are teenagers, and very close in age.

Gawd when I was 16 I smooched (literally, just smooched) a 21 year old and didn't think all that much was wrong with it! Those 16 year old boys were dorky, gawky children...later, when I turned 21 I thought about smooching a 16 year old and got grossed out...but looking at it from the younger age, it was fine at the time! (and I told my mom that he and I had kissed, and surprisingly she didn't flip out)

But anyway, this isn't 16 and 21 and just kissing, the case was two teens doing a bit more than that...and I believe he was released.

I'm not surprised. How old is Lynn Spears? She doesn't look all that much older than Britney, I bet she was young when she had her. Babies having babies seems to run in families, and this one probably is no exception.

According to imdb, her Date of Birth is May 4, 1955. There's a son born in '77, then Britney in '81, and Jamie in '91. Young, but not shockingly young, especially when Britney arrived.

OKay, some points I want to make:

#1- if you are in SCHOOL, then you are too young to have sex. Period.

#2- If people think that condoms or pills are so "unreliable", then either abstain, or use the method PLUS another birth control. (2 forms are better than 1)

#3- I think a lot of people who claim that they "were on the pill" and got pg also omit that they forget to take a pill or 2 once in awhile. Same with claims that the "condom broke", I think they just don't want to admit that there was no condom at all during some encounters.

While you are more than welcome to your opinions, and they are very good points. I don't know about "A lot of people", but I for one was on the pill and got pregnant with my 2nd one. I didn't miss any and wasn't using antibiotics, so it should have been effective. Granted I was 24, so it wasn't a big deal. Not planned, but certainly not unwanted.
Just wanted to add that from someone it happened to. :)

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 Thank you, that was the point I was trying to make!! People can say pregnancy is not avoidable, sure it is, don't have sex. If you do decide to have sex, use two forms of birth control! I too have heard the whole condom broke story too many times to count, like I said, I am not saying it doesn't happen, but very rarely. My niece in law uses that excuse all the time. She is 23, with 4 kids, EVERY time she swears there was a condom and it broke. Yeah right!

I heard on the news this morning that Jamie got $1Million from OK! for giving them the exclusive.

$500K now and $500K later for "baby's first photos."

You'd think after Kid #1, #2 or #3 she'd learn to use another form besides a condom- if they "don't work" for her. I bet she's the kind of person who if you'd bring up permanent sterilization to her, she'd claim its "too inconvienient". As if having 4 kids isn't!

There are some rare cases out there of genuine birth control failure, this is true, but I think 90% or more of "birth control failures" are totally bogus.

If you're in a committed relationship, get yourself sorted out with long-term, virtually infallible contraception. I never think twice about pregnancy - it's just not an issue, and my partner and I certainly don't want children right now!

Problem is: how socially acceptable is it for a 16-year old to be on long term contraception, i.e. anything beyond BC pills and condoms?

But even "long-term virtually infallible contraception" does sometimes fail. I have a copper IUD, but you can bet I still think twice about it. Enough in fact to chart my cycles and also use condoms or abstain from intercourse when I'm ovulating.

I would love to see girls being taught very comprehensively about their bodies, including charting. Not just for the sake of preventing pregnancy but also as a way to be familiar enough with their bodies to recognize when something's not right.

It does sometimes fail, but it's very, very rare. I agree with the whole charting etc. but that's part of women's health in general rather than sex education specifically.

Lynn Spears is the same age as my Mom, and I'm a few years older than her older son. If my Mom can manage to raise kids at a younger age without any of them getting pregnant or turning into WT, then I don't see why a woman with infinitely more money can't do the same ;)

this whole situation with jamie and her sister is sad. Where was those kids father growing up? so sad. Why would the mother let her 16 year old live with her boyfriend? It seems like mom has mixed thoughts , lets go to church and then send my CHILD to live with her boyfriend?? poor family I hope it all works out. You cant expect a child to have an adult way of thinking and SOMEONE needs to be the adult. I hope it all works out.

I agree with this 100%.

True True but you cant dance at all if the girl keeps her legs locked at the knees.

Boys needs to be taught to abstain unless married as well. Alot of girls are very aggressive these days despite what they may have been taught. To focus on one gender does a disservice to the other. Each male and female that creates a life is responsible. Jamie could have used birthcontrol but then so could her boyfriend. It's not right to lay this in only the girls lap.

#1 - I agree with you (HS & younger). Which is why I personally didn't have sex while I was in school 16+ years ago. But some of my friends did.

#2 - I do currently abstain. ;) I'm not getting left behind with a baby to raise by myself.

#3 - In HS, I was in the same room at the time as one of my friends who was having sex whose condom broke. I saw the condom both before and after. It was not intact afterwards. (No, I was not a voyeur. There were 4 of us in that room). It does happen. Just because you have never personally experienced it, it does not mean that it never happens.

I'm 23, still in school and definitely not too young to have sex.
Actually I was still in high school when I was 18 and 7 months...again, neither legally, morally or emotionally too young to have sex...
I'm not advocating sex for high schoolers but be realistic! The average age for losing your virginity in the USA is 16-17 years - she's hardly skewing the curve here....
This is so true. The news has even reported that teens having sex is on par with other countries. It's just that the US has a higher rate of teen pregnancies. I wonder why?
I may believe in abstinance, but I'm also realistic. Teach these kids about protection and teach these kids responsibility. They need to be taught that any sex, protected or not, can lead to pregnancy. Having a baby is not like playing with a doll. You can't just leave it in it's crib alone when you're tired of it.
True True but you can't dance at all if the boy keeps it in his pants.

This entire thread has been about what Lynne Spears did wrong...what Jamie Lynn Spears did wrong...even what Brittany Spears did wrong (and this particular issue has nothing to do with her). What about Jamie's DAD? What about this baby's DAD?? Why is every single mistake made, either thru less-than-stellar parenting or birth control, only resting on the shoulders of the women in this story????

It is not my place to play Judge & Jury, so I have a hard time commenting on this story. But it boggles my mind that it's 2007 and we're still stuck in the "she did a bad thing" mentality. THEY had sex and THEY created a life...she did not do this alone. Where is all of the moral outrage for HIM? :confused3 Jamie Lynn''s FATHER is as responsible for raising her as her mother is...where is the moral outrage for HIM? :confused3

True True but you cant dance at all if the girl keeps her legs locked at the knees.
Yes. It's past time that the boys are made to face the consequences as well as the girls are. Unfortunately, they can just "hit and run" without too many reprecussions from anyone. Parents need to start teaching these boys about the responibility of having sex and having children.
The entire Spears family and their choice in men are pretty pathetic.
Unfortunately, the choices of men these days is hardly stellar. Period.
Most are no longer being taught to be responsible husbands & fathers. Which is the main reason why I'm still not married with kids.

I agree w/ your statement but I think we all know that men can (unfortunately) just run away leaving the "parenting" to in this case a child. I feel that the woman NEEDS to make sure she is responsible for protection if only to protect herself from being struck in such a predicament.

I think you are being way too generous by far. ;)

The statistics for pregnancy while using either condoms or BC pills are 3# of the whole population. Just because a person says they are taking some form of BC does not mean they are using BC 100% of the time, therefore allowing themselves to get pregnant or becoming fathers.

Oh for Pete's sake people.

Lots of 16-years olds have sex. When people have sex, there's a chance at a pregnacy. Is this situation idea? No. But we are talking about a baby here - a good thing - not some evil plague.

The amount of moral tut-tutting towards both Jamie Lynn and her parents is sickening. People aren't perfect. Get over it.

It does sometimes fail, but it's very, very rare. I agree with the whole charting etc. but that's part of women's health in general rather than sex education specifically.

I would say it's both. Unfortunately, most girls are not taught this. I certainly wasn't. Neither were any of my friends taught about when women are most fertile.

I was the oldest female in my group of cousins to get married - the majority of the women in my family married by the age of 20 - some of them just out of high school and pregnant at 18. Of course this was back in the 1950's. My great grandmother married at 15 and had the first of 9 kids by the time she was 17. Nowadays this would be some sort of scandal.

If some 16 year old bazillionaire has a baby which she can support with her own income - it's none of my business. I sincerely doubt she is going to miss out on anything because she can't afford a sitter. Who in the world would be expecting anyone from the Spears family to be a role model for their daughter? If you are expecting Hollywood to raise your children you deserve what you get.
