Jam-bo or Jahm-bo?

How do your pronounce Jambo?

  • Jam like what you put on toast

  • Jahm: sounds like the vowel in John

  • Pronounce it both ways depending on my mood

  • Other: there's always an other, isn't there?

Okay, just curious as to how people are pronouncing the name of this AKV resort. Do you pronounce the "jam" part of the resort the same as jam you put on toast? Or do you pronounce it like "John" with an "m" instead of an "n"?

DW and I have had this discussion a few times and she insists on "correcting" my pronunciation most times I say it. So, which way do you pronounce it?

Just like the safari guides on Kilimanjaro Safari pronounces it - Jahm-bo. Not Jam like you put on toast.

Correct Swahili would be the "ah" sound since their a's always sound like the a in father but I am most guilty of Jambo like the American word "jam."

Well then you must not have voted since it's unanimous right now! :)

... and I've actually known this since I was a child, from a live-action Saturday morning children's program.

"Jambo, Jambo mean 'hello' in a funny African way..."

jahmbooooo!!!I love AKV Jahmmmmboooo!!!!

I know some who call it JUMBO (and spell it that way too) and they should know better!

Jahm-bo....however my husband calls it jumbo. Can't get him to say it right for the life of me! Ugh! :sad2:

I am an other...I know the "proper" pronounciantion is most likely Jahm, through the phonetics of the original language. But here in america we would pronounce it "jam", so either works, depending on if you are putting the the accent on it or not. Similar to how you pronounce certain common hispanic words, either is acceptable......

Thanks for your votes. I can tell that my wife is NOT going to like these poll results! :rotfl2:

No-ah problem, Mon. Rub da woman's nose in it. Show da woman who's boss, Mon!

It's JAHM-bo.

Hey...what's da worst dat can hoppen to you, Mon? :confused3 :scared1:

I always try to pronounce things as correctly to their native language as possible - no matter what the language.

But then again, I went to school for opera, and even though we didn't do any african languages, we were very strictly taught the pronunciation of all french, italian, latin, and german! I live in fear of pronouncing something incorrectly!

Jahm-bo for us.....never really considered another pronunciation until this poll.

Lorena Bobbit comes to mind.
Good, buddy! Just wanted to be sure you didn't lose it in the lights with being "right!!!"

There are worse things that being wrong.
