I know I've seen threads about this before but couldn't find any of them.

What is the best way to clean the Jacuzzi tub in the villa's?

The 2 ways I know of are:

1. run hot water into the tub with a 1/2 cup of dishwasher detergent
and run the jets for 10-15 minutes - then drain - refill tub and run
again for 10-15 munutes to clear jets

2. do above with 1 cup of clorine bleach

I do the bleach treatment at home in our garden tub. It works very well.

Not dish soap... I did this as a kid, then used fabric softner to kill the bubbles= what a giant mess!!

Thanks, I was thinking it was the dishwasher soap.

My parents have a tub in their FL house and use the electrasol DW tablet to clean it weekly. Do not use the gel pack unless you squeeze the contents out verses allowing it to dissolve. EDIT - not so sure the crystals are good for the tubs... until I fix this statement to state otherwise, I shall assume they're not and only use liquid detergent or bleach as discussed.

Regardless of how you clean it, if the tub has not been used in some time you may find black flecks floating in the water from the lines. Don't panic - in FL humidity that stuff builds up quickly and is the primary reason they need cleaning. Simply drain the tub and rinse with a quick round of clear water through the jets (filling the water up to above the jet level is the the longest part of this process).

Many couples enjoy their romantic encounter in the tub. So I really do not want to imagine how the previous guests have used it. :rolleyes1 However, my understanding is that most viruses, HIV, HPV, etc, denature very quickly on dry surfaces within hours.

If you are worried, make sure it is dry completely on all areas, then don't use it the first night.

And you can also clean it with Lysol wipes. Although it is relatively harmless, it is still very discomforting to see other people's hair (not from head) floating inside... You can easily tell that by the different color of hair.

White vinegar works too. Actually the manual for our new whirlpool tub at home recommends white vinegar over other options. Fill tub to just above jets, pour in a gallon of white vinegar and run jets.

But would the vinegar actually kill bacteria also?

At home I would definitely use vinegar but I think I would want to be more aggressive in the room tubs. Can you use the dishwasher soap provided in the room?

I use bleach....you can get some in the laundry area or the shops. If you use a cup, and then run the jets it will clean and disinfect.

Did a quick search to see if we're all recommending items that will not harm the tubs. I know no one wants to see the bill for replacement tubs rolled into their dues.

My findings: nothing. yet. (I shall continue looking).
What I did find was an interesting thread over on another forum:

Wow - a question I can finally help with! lol

We just moved into a new home with a jacuzzi bathtub, and though everything looked very clean, I noticed a little of the same scum stuff the first time I used it, and it just got worse the next 2 times (ewww) ...so I got online to research the problem.

Keep in mind that this house had been empty for 6 months (3 year old home) so the deposits were hardened in the pipes. This procedure had it **** and span...

Until I track down the web page from which I found it - I think it was at kholer.com or something... Here's the basic procedure:

1. Fill tub with hot water to a couple inches above jets.
2. Pour in about a half cup of bleach and a tablespoon of powdered cascade dishwashing detergent
3. Run the jets for 15 minutes with the air knob thing open all the way so it gives the highest turbulence
4. observe gunk and try not to choke 8]
5. empty tub
6. Refill with cold water to above jets
7. Run jets to rinse - 10 minutes

Do this twice a month.

Quite a few replies, some of which note the cascade to use is the 'complete' version, not the crystals which are acidic. I shall assume until I find otherwise that the Electrasol tablets are also acidic and will not use them.

White vinegar and wipes will not kill any bacteria or viruses lingering in the tubing of a jacuzzi tub. The tubing does not dry out completely but retains some of the water from previous use. Our hot tub repairman told me years ago to never use a bath jacuzzi in a hotel or resort without FIRST sanitizing it with a cup of bleach which will kill any type of bacteria. If you do not do this .....you are essentially taking a bath with the person or persons who used that tub before you....since some of their water has remained in the tubing.

I really don't like using the cascade because I use soap in my bath. It bubbles up when it mixes with the soap. I use the bleach once a month and it's great. I use hot water(as suggested) then I run it for 15 minutes. When I first moved here I would fill it with cold and rinse....but now I just drain it off, and rinse it with cups of cold water.
