LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Kiefer Sutherland was arrested early Tuesday on misdemeanor drunken driving charges after failing a field sobriety test, police officials said.

The actor was pulled over at about 1:10 a.m. in West Los Angeles after officers spotted him making an illegal U-turn, said Officer Kevin Maiberger.

Sutherland, 40, tested over the state's legal blood alcohol limit of .08 percent, and was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence, Officer Karen Smith said.

He was released around 4 a.m. after posting $25,000 bail, according to Sheriff's Department records.

Maiberger said Sutherland was scheduled to appear in court October 16.

Sutherland won a best actor Emmy award last year for his performance on the Fox TV series "24." The series is set to return to the air in January.

I'm not at all surprised. A friend was out in Hollywood a few years ago and ran into Keifer in a bar. She said he was beyond wasted, and hitting on her boyfriend.

I'm with Agnes. You could get a car & driver, party till you puke, and never endanger anyone except yourself. By the time you figure legal fees, rehab, and the negative publicity, the driver option looks even more attractive.

From TMZ (I realize it's not exactly CNN but they are usually right on these things):

24" star Kiefer Sutherland's DUI arrest last night isn't his first brush with the law. Or his second. Or even his third.

Kiefer plead guilty in 1989 and 1993 to reckless driving charges, and in 2004 to driving with a blood alcohol level above .08 -- the legal limit in California. It's the 2004 case for which Sutherland is currently on probation.
But things could have been a lot worse for Kiefer. The 1989 case had two gun charges tacked on -- carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle and carrying a loaded firearm in a public place -- both of which were dismissed. The 1989 and 1993 cases both had DUI charges as well, and both were dismissed.

Kiefer got three years probation for both of those cases, the second of which fell just after the probation was up for the first. Time was on his side in that one.

I am SUCH a Kiefer fan. This stinks.

DS was saying nasty things about DD's intelligence and I finally said, "Stop saying mean things about your sister!" So, he grabs a pen and writes something on his napkin. DD looks over his shoulder and reads aloud, "Mary is a maroon???"

"MORON! You're a MORON!" DS yells. Looks at me and says, "She proved my point!" He had written that she was a moron, not a maroon. Poor DD. That was the wrong time to demonstrate her dopiness.

When someone is being stupid, we now say, "Don't be a maroon."
