has anone traveled recently or about to travel and know if they are allowing you to keep your J2 wheelchair cushions for onboard the plane. I read that because they were gel filled there might be a problem. my son wouldn't be able to fly without sitting on his cushion.

Well since they don't have me get out of my chair so they can search it I can't see how they'd know I was sitting on a gel cushion. I use a Jay Active though and the only gel is right under my butt.

I've heard they do make exceptions for medical needs. So this would probably be covered under that.

thanks Bill, I wondered if they would notice when they do the tranfer from the wheelchair onto the plane aisle chair to take you on board. wonder if the J2 is similar to the Jay active because the gel on D's cushion is only on the bit his but is on.

just noticed you are in the usa Bill they seem to be so so strict with us from the UK allowing us in now I wonder if it would be different rules :confused3

My DD has a J2 Deep contour cushion. The gel is under the butt portion in a (I think silcone) sort of bag. I don't know that the screeners would know because with the cover on, the gel seats don't look all that different to a lay person than other cushions. My DD's has a little insignia embroidered on the side that says 'Jay2 Deep Contour', but unless the screeners know that means it has gel in, there is nothing that says it does.
I'm not sure about the UK coming to the US. Do they have an equivilent to the US Transportation Security Administration? Or, Virgin Air would know.

Sorry I didn't notice you were from the UK. I'm not sure how they'll handle it there. I'd assume they'd let you use it since on that long flight you'll need it as a medical necessity. But you never can be sure. :confused3

what a relief. do you think that will be the same as us from the UK

I suggest checking the website for your airline. I understand they maintain lists of what's permitted. Or maybe the website for your airport???

D's sounds and say's exactly the same as your dd's . :) to be honest the special needs part of the airline hasn't a clue . when we went in July I think because they knew all this was about to happen before we all did they wouldn't allow the wheelchair up to the plane door at Sanford (they did last year) but they did allow us to keep the cushion then (positive sign).

I think the major difference between the Jay 2 and the Jay Active is the size of the cushion and the amount of gel. The Jay 2 also weighs a few pounds more.

Here is a Jay 2:

and here is a Jay Active:

I picked the Jay Active because I don't have major problems with pressure sores. I even went abotu 25 years with just a normal 2 inch foam cushion. But I'd get a couple of minor pressure sores evey year. I swapped to the Jay Active and it's helped alot. I still get the rare very minor pressure sore when I've spent alot of long days in the chair but they go away quickly when I start spending more time lying around being lazy. :)

you wouldn't believe how little they tell you here including the airport website it is so general and the airlines havn't a clue. I will post on the UK forum to see if anyone from the UK has been with their wheelchair.

::yes::
The Jay2 Deep Contour (which my DD has because she is very thin and doesn't have any padding on her butt) has even more gel, is a little thicker and probably weighs a few pounds more than the Jay2.

I'm glad it's general - don't want to give anyone a list of gel products that are accepted so that they can figure out new ways to get bad stuff on board!

sorry feel stupid having typed that now :guilty: but I was just so worried about getting to the plane door and because my son can't sit on the 'normal' plane seat was worried we would have to go home. I know what you are saying but there is nothing to help, a link or even an email address to email in private (that I can find anyway) if you have a disablity and I understand 100% how they must make everything 100% secure but I would rather know now than get to a plane door and get turned back. Bit different if you have a high level of injury and it is vital equipment in your day to day living than say getting told to dump your water bottle or toothpaste. Maybe you are getting more information on the do's and don'ts in the USA that we are.

Ditto here, Bill. They have never had a problem with me keeping my seat with me. I store it with my overnight bag. The Jay Active's are so darn expensive I don't want ANYTHING to happen to it! :)

The government website here is pretty specific. The UK not being specific (although frustrating) is probably more secure because terrorists can't figure out ahead of time what would be allowed of not allowed.

I've got another suggestion. You might want to contact his PT or OT.
I realize that for some people sitting on their gel cushion is vital (for my DD, she can sit on an airline seat long enough to fly), but is there anything else that might be less protective, but protective enough for the air trip that doesn't contain gel? I'm thinking of some other pressure reducing substance like memory foam or memory foam plus something else that might work for the length of your trip as a backup if they say the gel cushion has to be in the hold.

Don't feel stupid about trying to do the best you can for your family! I hope that airline security has the brains to take each situation case-by-case, and you can take what you need with you on the airplane!

I just don't want the terrorists to get any more sick ideas, like using exempt accessible equipment (or a disabled person) to hijack/blow up a plane!

was thinking along the same lines Sue for example I was going to find out about the rowho I think you call them. they are used here if your pressure areas are really bad but would do the trick. think they are filled with air although 100% not sure. We have plenty of time as you never know what will happen with the security rules. I just wanted for find out as much as possible before we went and say speak to the OT and use another thing for the flight and hopefully they would let us put the other one in the suitcase.

I can't tell you how different the USA is to the UK in terms of mobility/ disabitiy issues, shouldn't be but you are way ahead and whereas your airlines would welcome the disabled and go out of the way to give info even before all this ours don't.
thanks again everyone

I never even put the two things together, I never gave it a thought.
.but isn't it sad that you can't ask advice now without the thought of giving someone bad infomoration.
