J&J approved in Canada

Yay!! This is giving me more hope that things will be more back to normal by the fall. 😁

This is excellent news! I work from home so I don't really need a vaccine, but I worry about kids getting this so I'd like to see them get vaccinated asap.

This looks like the best vaccine option out there. However I am reading that the first 10 million dose shipment is not expected here until September.

I'm really hoping for either the boarders to open up, or elimination of the quarantine hotel when flying, by August...not sure how this will affect that.

But still fantastic news.

I heard this vaccine is only approved for ages 18 and over at this time.

No, they said the first does aren't expected until April and the full 10 million of initial order would be completed by September. Also will be receiving extra pfizer by end of March than originally contracted for. Ontario is giving a date of June 20th for everyone eligible to receive it will get it. Although what does eligible mean I don't know... lol
But I think this will speed things up and hopefully by fall kids can go back to school as normal, and of course, travel!

The trials on kids started just prior to Christmas and the age group is 12-18. So it's highly likely that kids will not get vaccinated until the very end of this year or early next year. Kids younger than 12 will be even longer.

Last night they were reporting summer for kids. Source: CBC power and Politics. Hope it’s true.

During the press conference with health Canada they said an optimistic timeframe would be the end of the year. But likely not until next year. They said the clinical trials for kids take a lot longer to enrol people and complete.

From what I’d heard lately, at least in BC, we will be prioritizing the mRNA vaccines over this one. Or at least that’s the current plan. Though the plan seems to change from day to in the updates we get from the health authorities.

honestly, the bigger issue is getting enough health professionals qualified and available to administer vaccine.

I was helping my daughter look online for summer employment and noticed several postings for Immunizers in my region. They are now specifically seeking nursing students, paramedic students, retired nurses and retired paramedics to administer vaccines in community clinics. What is also interesting to note in these job postings is their contracts are to end in June 2022.

I work by government contract in health care. They can not post open ended contracts. They always have an end date but it doesn’t mean much. They are typically 2-5 months late renewing my contract every year.

who cares about vaccine for young people how many young people are getting a flu shot every year? very few I assume. More people under 19 died from the flu last year than covid this year as per stats Canada. The need is strictly for the over 50 crowd, even pre-existing conditions mean less regarding outcome than age does according to a slide that I saw in a presentation from Niagara's chief medical officer. Outcome is almost entirely age related.

Actually a lot of younge people get the flu shot every year. I know my kids usually do. A lot of people under 50 do as well.

In addition if you look at the data, a lot of the spread in Covid is in people under 50. Vaccinating younger people is what is needed to stop the spread. Older people may have more serious outcomes, but they aren’t the ones spreading it.

Me too! I’m holding on to our CBR August res in hope of border opening and no quarantine. But not hopeful enough to book air yet lol! 🤞

I would prefer the mRNA ones. I believe they have a higher effectiveness.
They could open it up to pharmacies too, like a lot of injections. And train people. As long as there are some medical personnel overseeing in case of reactions. I could probably give injections! I had to give myself injections for a month post op.

Injection is not hard to learn. You can train anyone to do it within 10 minutes (eg, how to properly sanitize skin, open syringe caps, stab muscles, and dispose used sharps, etc).

It's about the liability. Only regulated / licensed health professionals are eligible for malpractice liability insurance. Can you imagine a health malpractice lawyer trying to go after a supermarket cashier for giving his client a vaccine with side effects? So even if Loblaws one day gets to offer them without appointment, along with their Shoppers locations, they still need to use regulated health professionals. They cannot just put them at the checkout lines like lottery tickets where it can be given by the cashiers.

It's like real estate deals... do we really need a lawyer to rubber stamp a templated offer? It's not about how simple the job is... it's about if something goes wrong, the lawyer's liability or title insurance would cover it.

The availability of regulated health professionals will be a limiting factor on how fast these vaccines can be given.
