I've Got the Exploit Virus on This Computer. What Do I Do Now?

The computer tech I took our computer to said do NOT use Norton or McAfee. We use Panda Platinum and have been pleased. I have several spyware programs I can run too. I also try to use Mozilla Firefox most of the time. Good luck.

Ok you hear me now: I work with Dell and I know FOR SURE Norton is one of the best programs to have. You think it causes problems bc u are definitely doing something wrong with your computer.

Quick question then, IF you work for Dell, and that you know FOR SURE that Norton is the best, explain then, why Dell releases their computers with McAfee? Doesnt make much sense to me!

turn off your system restore option before you run your anti-virus program. exploit writes a command line that allows itself to replicate after you've cleaned it.

A few months ago, there was an article in PC Mag about a test of virus programs. MacAfee was rated top, AVG Free 7.5 was rated second (I'd use it... just search for AVG Free, you'll find a link at download.com). Norton was rated somewhere around 10th. Seriously. Norton is a big old heavy heaping helping of over-hyped software.

Our one PC (all our other computers are Macs) got this password-watching virus at home. Well, Norton didn't see it. *I* saw it because I glanced over at the screen and saw a DOS window pop up and it appeared to be FTP'ing to some IP address. I noted the name of the program and the IP address before the window disappeared. I force quit the program and found it on the hard drive. I copied it to my Mac over the network for further inspection in a text editor. I did a bit of research on how to remove it, and did so.

Later, I was browsing my Mac over the network, and Norton jumps up and yells at me, OMGWTH VIRUS FOUND!!! DELETED!!!

So it didn't see it when it wiggled its way onto my PC or when it was running, but it noticed the .exe sitting on my Mac desktop where I was keeping it to look at, *and* deleted it without even asking what I wanted to do with it! Oh well, I was pretty much done researching it by that point anyway but the fact was, it wasn't the actual virus.

Quick question then, IF you work for Dell, and that you know FOR SURE that Norton is the best, explain then, why Dell releases their computers with McAfee? Doesnt make much sense to me!

Duuuuude. It's because they save Norton's for the experts.

I hate this!!! I'm scanning right now and it's already shown up 4 times. Please tell me this is an easy fix. I have no computer skills. Well no important ones.
Waaaaa!

What you have is not something that you need to be overly concerned about, it is a very minor problem. And asking for help here is likely to get alot of responses from people who are not qualified to give you good advice on resolving the problem.

You should go ask for assistance at one of the ASAP approved forums where you will receive assistance from people who are trained in removing malware from your computer. A few of the sites that can help you are www.spywareinfo.com, www.castlecops.com, www.spywarebeware.com, www.pcpitstop.com, as well as many others.

If you want to run an excellent anti-spyware program before going to one of the sites for assistance you can do this (you can post the report which will assist the person who ends up helping you in making sure your computer is clean and save some time):

First download AVG anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded AVG AS, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG AS and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG AS, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  1. Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG AS is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  2. Lauch AVG AS by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  4. AVG AS will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  8. Close AVG AS and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG AS report scan.

I want to thank all of you for the replies. Everything has seemed OK since I quarantined the virus last night. This morning I did another total scan and nothing showed up so, hopefully, that's the end of it.

I have saved a lot of the advise here for that next virus that will attack somewhere down the road.

They dont hire 14 year olds! I am 21 dude!

I don't know a lot of 21 year olds that are begging people in their profiles to get back into VMK because they were banned. Yes, I know adults play the game, but your use of lewt speak pegs you as someone quite a bit younger than 21. If you want to be taken seriously as a 'dell computer expert' you need to loose it along with the CAPS.

Anything YOU THINK you know is WRONG. ANYTHING I say is right bc i am a dell extreme COMPUTER EXPERT.

Owning a dell extreme does not make one an expert. I could own a Mustang GT, but that doesn't make me a Mustang GT expert.
