We leave for WDW in 34 days. The trip is paid for, tix, dining, etc.... but money is really tight right now. I am a teacher so no income and dh is a contractor and business is kind of slow. We also have a trip to VA in 2 weeks for ds' track nationals. My mom is paying for our hotel since we are sharing but I still need gas money and incidentals. That will be fine through dh's work but I am concerned that we have no money set aside to take to Dis. We have been saving all of our change and have cans to return and I know dh will have money set aside but I want more!

So anyway, I have decided to sell plasma.:scared1: My mom laughed at me but my thought is that if I can make money while doing something good for someone, why not? I have very little on my schedule and have 2 kids that can babysit so the time is not a huge concern. The center near us is paying $50 for the first 5 visits. That's $250 for Disney. I think dh may go with me so that is $500!! That is only for the first 5 visits. We have enough time to donate 5 more times at approximately $30 each so another $300. That is $800 for Disney!! :woohoo:

Now that you can all see how excited I am, can anyone think of any reason this would not be a good idea?

I donated plasm a lot when I was a poor college student. I never had any issues at all so I say go for it if you are comfortable doing it. Drink lot's of water on the days you donate, seems to make the process faster. Good luck!

I think I have already taken in a gallon in the last 6 hours! :scared: I had some ice cream, too. I figured the dairy would help as well.

My husband did this back several years ago. Easy money. We lived in a college town, and it was a big deal.

years ago i use to donate plasma...make sure to iron rich food, they will check your iron and protein levels before you can donate as well as check your weight (which is why i can't donate right now, i don't weigh enough)..the morning i would donate i would always eat a piece of toast with peanut butter and drink TONS of water...typically the process lasted about 2 hours on average for me, some ppl it takes longer others shorter..i use to go twice a week for at least 6 months and i still have a scar on my arm from where they put the needle in..good luck if you do it! it's easy money if you don't mind needles

Something I should be doing, but I almost passed out after donating blood. They were giving away free 6" subway subs, which I ate one before and after donating. (which happened to be at the campus) I made it to the main hall, and fell asleep for like 4hrs afterwards on one of the couches. I don't even remember how I made it home, where I fell asleep for the rest of the night. I was also on the brinks of anemia, which might've not helped out.

I hate saying no to the blood bank mobile, but I just can't go through that again. I had one guy talk to me for like 10 minutes, and didn't want to believe me that I passed out so easily. I probably should've told him it was less than 30 days since my last donation to get him off my back.

Good luck. And that's a ton of extra spending money. It'll sure make the vacation nice. Although I'd probably save most of it as a start to the next family vacation. Being frugal is half the fun at disney.

make sure you take in alot of iron you don't want Iron problems. I've been anemic my entire life and donated blood once and it wreaked havoc on my system for along time. I didn't know but I wanted to do some good and I was participating in a blood drive. Now I know and wouldn't do it again.

Wow, I didn't know you could get paid for that. DH donates his for free!

But, it is much harder on him than just giving blood. I think someone once told me to eat jelly beans before giving blood. :confused3 I have no idea why, but it sounds like a good excuse to eat candy to me. :thumbsup2

Got a good chuckle from your title. I sold plasma years ago when I was in college, and my mother actually wrote "We recently found out that our daughter has been selling her body for money" in the family Christmas newsletter. Fortunately for me she did clarify what she meant...

I never ran into any physical problems with those plasma sessions, although I have always been borderline anemic and have occasionally been denied from donating whole blood due to my iron level. I do have some very faint "track marks" from the repeated needle sticking but not enough that anyone would ever notice.

If you're healthy and it's a reputable center, no reason not to try it out. You can always stop if you have a bad experience.

If you decide not to go with that idea, how about having a yard sale? You'd be surprised at what people will buy at a yard sale.

I usually make $800-$900 dollars at my annual spring yard sale. :thumbsup2

Where do you find a palce to donate at? Thats a great idea.

Yard sales have alwayts been a bummer for me. I have a ton of stuff moarked cheap and still people come and look and buy little. I made $40 in 3 days my last sale last summer. I donated all my stuff after that. not worth the work.

Well, that idea didn't work out so great. I arrived at 8:00am (they opened at 6) and signed in. Waited about an hour and got called up to fill out the pre-screening questionnaire. I asked about how long it would be and she said a looooooong time since there were 20 new patients in front of me!! During the hour I sat there, they called back 3 or 4 people so at 4 people an hour I would have waited about 5 hours to get in and then another 2-3 for the appt itself!! I got my ID and left. There are so many things I could do with 8 hours. I think I am going to take my tennis bracelet that I never wear to a couple of jewelry stores today and see what I can get for it. Also going to try and sell some stuff in a yard sale or on Craigslist. I have a Thomas Kinkade numbered painting that I'd like to sell but am not sure where to do so.

I think you can make an appointment so that you don't have to wait so long. MAke sure you eat a really good breakfast before you go if you try it again. I used to go all the time before I had my Dd and then I tried again last year and I had not eaten enough so I had to sit there and eat a pbj sandwich and some Ramen noodles which I hate and had to fight to keep from barfing those. After waiting a long time i was declined because of my iron.

I have given plasma before and I never had any ill side effects from it and it didn't hurt except for the initial stick. Drink LOTS of water the day before you go and it won't take nearly as long. It usually took me 1 hr - 1 15 minutes to donate. $50 for the first 5 visits is REALLY good! Here they pay you $40 for the first 2 visits then after that it goes by your weight. Anywhere from $20 a week (2 visits) to $60 a week.

I say GO FOR IT!

Oh by the way you are limited to donating 2 times in 7 days. Or at least that's how it is here. You aren't allowed to donate every day.

OP, sorry it didn't work out for you.

As a former blood banker who would watch the units dwindle down to a few (this would be type O, and B it was a blood distribution center for a large area), please, consider donating your blood. It is nice to have the cash from donating plasma, but blood (given by volunteers) is needed. Especially type O and B.:goodvibes

Do you know if I can donate blood if I am on aspirin therapy for a clotting problem? I assumed I would not be eligible, since they probably wouldn't want my clotty blood for someone else - but if that doesn't rule me out, I'd love to donate. I'm O+. Both of my parents have donated many gallons over the years, and I always thought it was such a great thing to be able to help others in such a simple but significant way.

I am not sure about the answer to your question. I was involved in the testing phase, not the collecting phase. I did find this:
You are eligible 72 hours after last taking aspirin for a platelet donation. Aspirin does not affect eligibility to donate whole blood.
But I would call your local blood collection facility to find out about whether your 'clotty blood' ;) would be something they could use.
My guess is no, but I am not sure. But I hope so! O+ is great.

I don't know why - but selling blood or plasma makes me giggle that you can even do that. We just do it for free here in Canada. Which reminds me - time to donate!
