It's up one minute, gone the next.

It seems to be up and down from minute-to-minute. One minute, I'll get a search to go through, the next I'll get a message saying it's shut down.

If you're worrying about processing power you might just want to disable full-text and make it subject-line only searching. That's MUCH less intensive and still offers a lot of functionality.
