I had not planned to write a report, but since I still had some more time before school started back, I thought I would go ahead.

Four of us- my mom (50), my brother (21), my new sister-in-law (24), and myself (17)- went to WDW for the purpose of staying concierge at AKL and participating in the Sunrise Safari. In other words, we wanted to see animals and eat.

A little background info...
My mom and I fell in love with AKL when we ate at Boma for the first time in June 2007. Since then we have eaten there on my birthday in November 2007 and during a weekend trip in April 2008. We knew that sometime in the future we would stay at the lodge.

After doing research, I presented my mom with the wonders of staying AKL concierge. I had read reports on how the Sunrise Safari was not to be missed. We wanted to stay at the lodge and have a savanna view, and since concierge level wasn't much more than a savanna view room, we decided to go ahead with a one night stay during value season. Unfortunately, we had to stay off-site at a Quality Inn for the first and last nights of our trip to be able to afford AKL concierge, but it was worth it since we spent very little time in those rooms. Also, to get the most bang for the large amount of bucks it costs to stay concierge level (and the high gas prices), we decided to invite my newlywed brother and his wife. (They were married June 14 of this year and honeymooned in WDW, so they were returning to the world after only 6 weeks.)

My mom and I love eating good food. That being said, we don't "waste" our calories on junk. We only eat food that is "worth" the calories. This philosophy has started to catch on with the rest of the family. I started the trend and my mom followed.

My family cannot believe it when I or my mom sit down and eat and eat and eat. I have received comments similar to, "You know all that eating will catch up with you" or "I wish I was your age, so I could eat that way". I hate hearing that, and I have been bold enough to put people straight. They see me as a petite teenager and think I can eat what I want whenever I want, but that is not the case.

I am a little over 5'3 and used to weigh over 190 lbs. I now weigh 118. I weigh less now than I did when I was 6 years old. My mom has lost over 25 lbs since July 2007 and is now 5'9 and 138 lbs. So, we are fairly slim.

I (and now my mom) worked very hard to lose weight, and we have to work very hard to keep it off. Now, Disney trips are our times to reward ourselves with good food. We swim every day in the summer and do other exercises during the cooler months to stay fit. We are constantly watching what we eat - and that is one thing that made concierge look very appealing. We would be able to eat what we wanted when we wanted and however much we wanted. That is a rarity for us.

Needless to say, we were very excited about this trip.

Coming up... actual reviews of food. Unfortunately, we didn't take pictures even though my mom thought about it a couple of times, we didn't have the camera with us.

Welcome to the boards. We stayed at AKL and loved it. We plan on doing a big family trip in 2010 and already told my parents to stay here. They are not big into the parks and know they would enjoy just sitting and watching the animals.

Looking forward to the rest of your report.

Yay for your 1st post! I'm in the process of losing weight (trying to get to about 30 lbs lost total) and am halfway there! Our trip to the World in September will not include any calorie counting though. It is, after all, a vacation!
I can't wait to read your reviews!

Thanks! I admit I've been a lurker since May 2007, and I finally decided to join the boards so I could enter a chat about a month ago. I love reading dining reviews, and I've looked at every single food porn page - part 1 and 2. I wrote a trip/food report for another message board when we did free dining last September (which we are doing again this Sept.), but I knew this review would be more welcome here.

I'm sure your parents will love staying at AKL. I enjoy active vacations and don't like to lie around all day. AKL was a nice change of pace for us. It was much more relaxing than going to the theme parks, but we stayed busy the entire day we were there.

Congratulations!! I know your hard work will pay off. I can't wait to go in September also!! We don't calorie count on vacation (or holidays) either!!

We drove the 8 hours to Orlando. After having only a 3/4 cup of Special K protein cereal w/o milk for breakfast and about 15 baby carrots for lunch, I was ready for Boma for our 4:30pm ADR. My brother found out the answer to the Boma question of the day, but wouldn't tell the CMs, so I went and answered the question. I received a small card with a safety pin attached that said, "I'm a Boma trivia winner" and a card with a trading bead attached to it that explained the significance of the beads. I was very excited. I didn't wear the pin and card, but I'm still glad I got the souvenir from my favorite restaurant.

I adore Boma. I dream about Boma, I think about Boma, I salivate over Boma. Sometimes, I can even smell Boma. My top favorites are the crab soup, the salmon, the couscous, and the zebra domes. I could eat those four things every day. I also really enjoy the upside-down pineapple cheesecakes and all the other soups. I had at least a half-bowl of each. An honorable mention goes to the potatoes and the prime rib. Those were enjoyed more by my brother and mom than by me, but I still like them even though I skipped them this trip.

S-i-L ate nowhere near enough. She put very little on her plate and picked at it. She claimed she was full, but I know I have seen her eat more. Maybe I was just comparing her to me who went to the buffet 7 times - this includes 6 bowls (or half bowls) of soup, 3 dinner plates, and 2 dessert plates.

I had a total of 6 zebra domes and 3 pineapple cheesecakes, along with two small slices of cheese flan. I don't bother with any of the other desserts. My brother found that he enjoys the zebra domes covered with the chocolate rum sauce they have for the bread pudding.

I asked our waitress when I was at Boma in April what nights they had the crab soup since they did not have it the Saturday we were there. She told us they had it on Fridays and Tuesdays. The crab soup is the reason why were came down on a Friday and the reason why were are coming down on a Friday in Sept. She brought us a seafood bisque on that trip. It was ok, but too peppery in my opinion. I don't know if that's we she thought we wanted or if she thought it was similar enough to the crab soup, but it was not as good. I was grateful she tried though, and I know from now on the go to Boma on a Friday or Tuesday for my crab soup.

I assume that Fridays and Tuesday have the same menu for everything- that includes:
ginger black-eyed peas with cabbage (ok)
potatoes with Afritude (very good)
coconut curry salmon (amazing- spiced, but not spicy)
prime rib (very good) with a choice of 4 different sauces
pork roast (I'm not a fan of most pork, but this is pretty good)
rotisserie chicken (didn't get any this trip even though it is good)
couscous (amazing)
mac 'n cheese (ok)
chicken pepper pot soup (delicious)
butternut squash soup (very good, a favorite of bro and S-i-L)
coconut curry seafood stew (great)
lamb stew with lentils (also great)
crab soup (you know my feelings on this)
watermelon rind salad and 3 other fruit salads (I don't like any of the salads and no one else in the family likes them either, so we didn't eat any of them this trip)
mixed greens salad with dressings
pap and sheeba (pretty good)
fufu (different - it's ok)
falafel (I like one of my friend's dad's falafels and mine better) with yogurt sauce
other kid choices - french fries, penne and meatballs with a tomato sauce

Dessert includes:
zebra domes
pineapple upside-down cheesecakes with a white chocolate base
cheese flan

What I didn't bother tasting this time because I don't care for them from other trips:

banana bread pudding with chocolate rum and vanilla sauce
pastry shell with vanilla pudding? and a strawberry or blueberry in it
cookies
brownies
cherry cobbler
melk tart
chocolate mousse (loved by S-i-L, but I always feel like it has too much rum)

So, on very full stomachs we went to see the animals. Then, we headed over to the Boardwalk and rented a surrey bike for four people. This was a lot of fun!! We made it around the boardwalk 3 times before our time was up. We finished just as the skies opened and it poured down rain. We found shelter just in time. The views were great. Beware the hill leading up to the bridge in front of the Swan and Dolphin. That was a difficult climb, but we loved the entire ride on the bike.

Next up.. the joys that are Animal Kingdom Lodge Concierge

I wonder why I never realized the prime rib has sauces before. I've never noticed them, and just have always eaten it plain. Do you happen to remember what kind of sauces there are?

I realized I left off the pork and chicken, so I added them to the above post. I also didn't mention that we all had Jungle Juice and water with our meals, plus my mom ordered ice tea and added Splenda. Our waitress offered us coffee at the end of the meal, but we were all too full.

The sauces are beside the salmon. I can only remember two of them since I didn't get them or the prime rib this trip. The Boma mustard is pretty much a spicy mustard that is quite good. The other one I remember is very hot and spicy. It has an African name and a warning that it's hot. The name is something like "sambal". I'm sorry I can't remember the other two even though I remember they were good.

Usually when I wake up in the morning, I am starving, because I eat small, early dinners. After all that we ate last night, none of us were hungry. However, our off-site hotel had a continental breakfast. We were planning to eat in the concierge lounge in a couple of hours, so I decided to just see what our hotel had for breakfast. I didn't want to miss out on anything.

I had one bite of a pastry and muffin and I threw them away. I don't like wasting food, but they really weren't good. The hotel did have a waffle maker, though. The waffle was pretty good. I ate about 3/4 of it with a little bit of syrup. They also had very good apple juice.

We left our hotel a little after 9am and had to stop and look for my brother a swimsuit, because he and his wife were going to use a plus option at Typhoon Lagoon (my mom and I don't have plus options on our ticket). He didn't want to pay $15 for a cheap suit that wasn't Disney related, so he didn't get one. Finally, we are on our way to our first stay at AKL.

We knew that in the past the concierge check-in was at the bell services desk. However, there was no longer a sign that said that was where concierge check-in was supposed to be. (Also, the Boma check-in in the lobby was no longer there. We checked-in at the restaurant.)

So, we walk over to the regular check-in since there wasn't a line that early in the morning. When the CM looked up our reservation, she seemed very nervous that we were club level guests. There was nothing for her to worry about. We are average people on an average paycheck. She seemed like she really didn't want to mess up. She asked us to follow her to the bell desk where she picked up our information. She then proceeded to take us to the elevator where she realized she forgot our keys. My brother's, s-i-l's, and my key had our last name without it's second 'o' (mom has different last name). I mentioned it to the CM, and she offered to fix it. I told her not to bother printing up more keys as long as it wouldn't interfere with our IDs having a different spelling. The CM then proceeds to show us how to use our keys to get the concierge lounge.

Anyway, back to the food.

While my mom is checking us in, the rest of us realize we are hungry, so we go ahead and get some breakfast. They had an even better breakfast than I was expecting. :cool1:

The offerings included:
quinoa: nature's highest protein source - This was very, very good. I've never had it before, and I don't know what to say it's like. In some ways, it has the texture of couscous, but the "grains" are larger. It was slightly sweet, but very different. As soon as I walked over to the offerings, a guest staying in the lounge told me I needed to try it. He also said I may like it with brown sugar. (I never ended up trying it with the brown sugar, so I can't comment on it.)

chocolate croissant - delicious, the best croissant I've ever had :worship: I went back for another one.
miniature apple turnover - very good
croissant - ok, I just had a bite of my mom's since the chocolate croissant was much better.
strawberry and blueberry? preserves, orange marmalade, peanut butter
bagels
mini blueberry, banana nut, and chocolate chip (croissant was much better, I didn't finish it) muffins
oatmeal - I never had any
brown sugar and granola for oatmeal
whole apples, oranges, bananas
cantaloupe, pineapple, blueberries
fruit loop, corn flakes, raisin bran, cheerios
coffee and decaf
vanilla and hazelnut flavorings
assorted hot teas
cappuccino maker (the cappuccino was good after adding splenda and steamed milk)
hot chocolate packets (I had this in the evening using the steamed milk instead of hot water. ;) )
pineapple juice (the second time in my life that I've actually had really good pineapple juice :goodvibes I love pineapple! :lovestruc )
orange juice
mango juice
Evian and Perrier (I drank a lot of Evian - it doesn't taste any different from my well water at home, but it was better than Florida tap water. I drink a lot of water and it's usually all I drink, so having the Evian was very nice. I probably had at least 2 liters of it. It's the first time I have ever had it or Perrier. Perrier was disgusting. I don't get what makes these waters so great. :confused3 )

1% milk, skim milk, chocolate milk
apple juice in cartons
Yoplait regular and light yogurt

I was surprised to find real plates and glasses. I know that's strange, but I was expecting plastic everything. It's much nicer to choose what kind of cappuccino cup I wanted and to have a glass with real silverware and a glass plate. The only problem... my mom and I kept wanting to clean up after ourselves. We felt bad not throwing things away and leaving plates on the table. My mom couldn't stop herself from stacking things up.

By this time, it was after 10am. They told us when they were going to start cleaning up and for us to get anything else we wanted. We had eaten our fill and were ready for fun at AKL. Unfortunately, our room wasn't ready, but they said they would call us when it was.

Next.. how we ate all day. This is where the title comes from. I'm not sure how many times I or someone else said "it's time to eat again". A couple of time it was more along the lines of an incredulous "it's TIME to EAT, AGAIN!?!"

Sounds great so far! We are staying AKL CL for the first time in Oct...I had to add another night just to get the Sunrise Safari....so excited!

After walking around the lodge and shopping, my mom asks, "What activities are going on now?" I answer, "Well, it's time to eat again." Therefore, we proceeded to the Kilimanjaro Club lounge.

I loved the fact that we had to have a key to get to the lounge. Our favorite route became taking the stairs from the outside up to the fifth floor (sixth floor is locked w/o a key entry) and crossing over the bridge to the gate the needs a key in front of the stairs that lead straight to the lounge. We enjoy walking for exercise, so it was great to take a long way to the lounge.

From 11am until 3pm, the lounge has:

kettle chips (I don't care for potato chips, but these were amazing. I ate several.)
goldfish crackers
spiced nuts - great :thumbsup2
banana chips (I don't like banana)
trail mix - this had nuts, m&ms, goldfish, pretzels
granola -I didn't care for it
warm chocolate chip and another type of cookie - it may have been macadamia nut. I know that I preferred the chocolate chip which was pretty good. I dipped it in skim milk which I poured from the carton into a glass.
lemonade - very good
African Smoothie - I thought it was ok. There was something that I didn't like about it. It may have been a coconut flavor. However, everyone else loved it. My mom never drinks anything like that, and she had several glasses.
iced tea
canned sodas in the fridge along with the same milks, coffee, cappuccino, teas, hot chocolate, Evian, Perrier, and apple juice available at breakfast
beer was available upon request

Thanks so much for the detailed AKL CL offerings, this helps me out alot!

You're welcome! I read as much as I could about concierge before our vacation, and I kept reading that there wasn't enough food offered to keep from buying anything. This was not the case for us. We spent the entire day at AKL on Saturday, and we only ate at the lounge and the culinary tour (not much food, coming up soon). We thought we may leave the resort and get a No Way Jose or go to Earl of Sandwich, but 1) we were never hungry enough to leave and 2) the resort offered so many activities we didn't want to leave.

The next lounge offerings were out from 3pm until 5pm. The brochure said they would have loose leaf teas, scones, etc. My S-i-L loves hot tea and was excited about the loose leaf teas. Unfortunately, the only hot tea available were the packets that had been out all day already. The other offerings available were:

brownies (very dense and pretty good, my mom loved them)
scones (good with the strawberry preserves - the preserves were in their own little glass jar like what you get at Cracker Barrel with blueberry pancakes)
the same drinks were out as before
I don't remember what else they had out at the time. If there was anything else offered, it may have been the same snacks from before.

Next up.. culinary tour of Africa

Great report. We're staying AKL concierge for the first time on our next trip, so I'm pleased you enjoyed the food offerings. It all sounds really good.

I decided I wanted to decorate a cookie at Boma. The cookie decorating is available to all guests even though it's recommended for kids. My mom didn't want to decorate a cookie, but the rest of us decorated a giraffe with icing. I ate a little bit of it. It was fine, but there were too many other food offerings available for me to fill up on that cookie.

I knew that at 4pm I wanted to participate in the Culinary Tour of Africa. I wasn't sure if everyone else would want to do it with me, but I knew I was going to no matter what. I shouldn't have been surprised that they also wanted to try it out.

Two groups were meeting inside Jiko (where I have never been, so being in Jiko was neat in its own right) - those who were going on the Sunset Safari and those who were there for the culinary tour. After the group left for the safari, about 15-20 people were left. The culinary tour didn't actually start until 4:15pm which caused us to be late getting out of Boma.

First off, a CM from South Africa told us a little about Jiko and the architecture and decorations of the restaurant and the lodge. Also, he pointed out two hidden mickeys and said the reason Mickey and friends were not more prominent in the lodge was because the Imagineers wanted to keep the theme going that you really are in Africa. Everyone received a Jiko menu and then the group proceeded to the bar area known as The Cooking Place. Here we sampled the Taste of Africa - pita bread and two other kinds of bread (naan and lavosh maybe) with three spreads: kalamata olive hummus and two other very good spreads the I don't remember the name of. I know that one was green, and it may have been my favorite. I liked something different about each one.

At first, I only took a small piece of bread and sampled one dip because there were so many people on the tour. The chefs told us that usually the group is smaller. Some of the people at the back had to stand. There actually ended up being more than enough food, and we all sampled more.

Next, our African guide led us to Boma. Here the chef told us about the menu, and we were free to ask any questions. Unfortunately, Boma was now opening for dinner, and the CMs were playing the drums, so it was hard to hear. We were able to choose one soup and one dessert to sample. The four of us each choose a different soup, so we could try 4/5 of them. I have been to Boma on a Saturday night twice before, so I had already tried everything, but it doesn't hurt to try them again. We were very lucky in that the only soup we didn't try was the soup offered in the lounge that evening.

It's been a couple of weeks, and I don't remember exactly what soups were there. I know one was the carrot ginger soup which is very good, and has an interesting flavor, but I can't eat much of it at a time. S-i-L really liked it. They also had the chicken pepper pot and coconut curry chicken stew - which they had in the lounge that night.

For dessert, we each had a zebra dome (S-i-L may not have, she was upset about one of the guests pushing her or something:rolleyes: ) This brought me to a grand total of 7 zebra domes for the trip.

As soon as we finished our tour (which is free to all guests of the lodge), the next offerings were about to come out in the lounge, so it was time to eat again.

The evening offerings were more extensive than I thought they would be also. The same drinks were offered along with wine and beer. Also, there was:

Coconut curry chicken stew - great, this really filled me up
meatballs with tomato sauce - good
bbq pork ribs - I'm bot a fan of ribs, so I didn't try them, but my brother loved them
marinated carrots, hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, olives, roasterd red peppers (all were excellent)
celery
breads with black olive hummus, white bean hummus, and yogurt dip (dip was ok, I skipped the rest because I had just had them during the culinary tour)
smuckers uncrustables
gummy bears
brie, smoked gouda, smoked cheddar, and blue cheeses

We ate not long after they put the food out and right before they put it up.

From 8pm until 9pm are their dessert offerings.
This night they had cookies, pastry shells with pudding and fruit and bread pudding pyramids from Boma, same drinks, and cordials (baileys, kahlua, amaretto, etc). We could tell that something else was supposed to be set out. We were hoping they would replenish them with zebra domes. We were all so full from a day of eating that we wouldn't be disappointed if they never replenished it, but we were still hoping they would. Later on, we headed back, and they had set out the pineapple upside-down cheesecakes that my mom and I love. They only had 4 sitting out, so I took one, my mom took one, and then her and I split one white another guest took the last one. My brother and S-i-L had already gone back to the room and didn't care for any.
We could have gotten another one later, but we decided against it. We also received turndown service, but we were too full to eat the chocolate.

The lounge CMs were great all day. They kept very busy cleaning up and replenishing food. I hated the fact the some of the guests were rude to the CMs. Some people were acting like the CMs were unworthy to even be waiting on them. There was one family that acted liked they owned the place and were upset that they actually had to wait to check-in at 3pm. The CM showed them to a seat in the lounge and said they were welcome to get some food while they waited. The father couldn't believe he couldn't check-in right away. I would love to see that father wait in a thirty person long line to check-in at the All-Stars after a day of driving. I tried to be very nice to the CMs for this reason. I didn't want them to think I was expecting them to be my servants. There were many times I got the vibe that the CMs were supposed to be treating us like we were royalty. Yeah, I want to be waited on as a paying guest, but I didn't want the CMs to feel like I was too good for them to even talk to me.

The only less than pleasant experience I had was with a CM at the desk. I went to double check on where breakfast would be for the Sunrise Safari. The paper they handed out said Pizzafari, but I knew that was where it used to be and that breakfast recently had been at Tusker House. When I asked, she acted like I shouldn't have been talking to her and that I should have believed the paper. Also, I asked her about the bounceback promotion in our room. Since we were only staying one night, we really didn't have time to think about dates for us to return to Disney, especially to a deluxe hotel. She was less than helpful and said that we may or may not be accommodated if we called after we checked out.

I was also surprised that we were never called for our room. We were hoping the room would be ready earlier than the usual check-in, but we asked about the room after 3pm. The CM said they had been busy and hadn't had time to call. I expected a little better service than that, but if our room really hadn't been ready long, then it wasn't a problem. I just hope our room hadn't been ready for several hours.

Putting those problems aside, we had an amazing experience. The view from our room was excellent. I loved hanging out at the lodge and going to the lounge. I felt like a very special guest. This is something I would definitely do in the future.

Next day... bright and early for the Sunrise Safari.

really enjoying reading your reviews!

you had the trip of my dreams: eating and eating some more in disney!!

all that food on the culinary tour sounded great, but the lounge food sounded incredible!!

We loved all the food we had on the trip. I would definitely take a trip like this one again. It's worth it to stay concierge if you're spending a lot of time at the hotel.

Now for our entire day in the parks...

Sunday was the only day we would be in the parks, so we were going to see our favorites in all four parks - starting with the Sunrise Safari and ending the day at the MK which didn't close until 2am. Since we were checking out this day, we had to have everything in our van before leaving the lodge. We made it back to the lounge with plenty of time to spare. :thumbsup2

We are supposed to meet in the lounge in between 6:45 and 7am. The lounge begins serving drinks at 6:30am. None of us were hungry, but we decided to eat a bite, because it would be a couple of hours before breakfast. We all started with juice. Of course, I had to have the great pineapple juice. By the time everyone checked in, it was after seven and they had set out the quinoa. :goodvibes So my brother and I had to have a bowl. My mom can't have too much sugar in the morning and after drinking the sweet juice, she knew she needed a bite to eat. I suggested she that she eat a packet of peanut butter. It was the perfect thing to keep her from getting sick. ;)

By 7:15, we were to meet in the lobby near the large mask. We actually didn't go board the buses until after 7:30. On top of that, the rude father from the day before leaves the group. I'm not sure where he went, but he was ten minutes late coming to the buses. Also, he just strolled from the lobby to the bus like no one was waiting on him. After finally getting to the park and loading the ride vehicles, there were some problems on the savanna and at first they were concerned that we wouldn't be able to do the safari. Fortunately, we were able to complete the safari even though we took longer stops at some places. I believe we saw just about every animal on the savanna. Also, the male and female lions were out together making for a great picture.

The park was open by the time the safari ended. I guess that's why they changed the breakfast to Pizzafari instead of Tusker House. The back room of Pizzafari was blocked off with a curtain. We gave them our name, and they showed us our seat.

The breakfast was good, but I was a little disappointed since I was expecting the offerings they have at Tusker House. :sad2: The selection was still great, even though only one thing really stood out to me. I can best describe the meal as saying it was "fine". Nothing really wrong with it, but not enough things were really good.

banana stuffed french toast covered in sugar - this was amazing. :worship: I had 3 slices. My mom usually doesn't care for sweet things like this, but she loved it also. There actually wasn't any banana in it which was great for me since I don't like banana. There were bananas in a sauce to go on it or you could choose syrup like I did.

I didn't try the ham with pineapple, sausage patties, or biscuits and gravy.
sliced sausage links - fine
bacon - fine
omelet - this was actually like a frittata. The only really good part was the cheese on top.
scrambled eggs - regular buffet scrambled eggs, fine
french toast sticks - I've had better. They were fine.
danishes - fine. I only ate a couple of bites of a cheese one.
banana nut bread - ok
cinnamon rolls - I ate less than half of mine. I ate all the parts with icing on it.
cheesy potatoes - I usually love cheesy potatoes, but I didn't care for these.
assorted cereals in the bowl

Drinks were water, jungle juice, milk (the fat content wasn't on there), and regular and decaf coffee. Also, there was hot water to make hot tea. Creamer and different sugar were available.
I also saw no sugar light syrup and smuckers squeezable jelly.

I left a lot on my plate, because most of it wasn't that good. I did go back for the french toast, though. I had mostly water with some juice. I finished my meal with coffee and creamer that was on every table.

I left pretty full, even though I could have eaten a more if there had been more I wanted. In some ways, it was a good thing. I didn't want to eat too much, especially sweet stuff, before riding Everest.

After eating so much the days before and at breakfast, we ate little the rest of the day. I'll have those reviews in the next post.
