It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! Update: 1/21/14

Love reading about your trip. You were there right before we were for Christmas and it is so fun right.

Looks like you had some great ADR's so far and it is great to see how easy it was for you guys to ride swap with the fastpass system.

Following along for the rest

Thanks!

I think I did good with the ADR's. Traveling with a two year old can be tricky, and this was our first trip with only one signature meal but I think I did good with my selections.

We really had no issues with either the Rider Swap or Fastpass+ while we were there. No complaints. It was easy and a I think a really nice improvement on the old system!

I last left off as we were leaving Magic Kingdom for Grand Floridian. We'd done quite a bit that morning but had a really long evening planned because we had more tickets to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party so we split our day into two sections.

But first...lunch. We'd never eaten at the Grand Floridian Cafe so we were looking forward to the change. I'm a fan of the mid-day break touring plan since we're normally rope-droppers and not Fastpass users, so having lunch at a resort is something we usually enjoy doing as it's a really nice way to start relaxing.

Anyways...so off to the Grand Floridian.

DSCN0860_zps6a942717.jpg

And we weren't disappointed. First of all it smelled amazing. I'm sure it had something to do with the giant candy/cookie house in the lobby but it just smelled fantastic. We wandered around a lot on the first floor. Between the tree and the gingerbread house it was crowded and I missed the sign to where the restaurant was the first time and we circled the lobby to find it.

Once we did though they seated us immediately. The restaurant wasn't too busy but filled up shortly after we arrived.

Our waitress was great and within a blink of an eye we had our drinks.

DSCN0863_zps18ab16e3.jpg

Not to be outdone, Vivien also got a drink with a light on it.
IMG_3063_zps53dc1338.jpg

She was a little cranky (hungry and hot really) so I put a movie on for her and let her zone out a bit which allowed my husband to get a little more relaxed and slow our pace down a bit. Normally I'm not a fan of movies while eating but given that our Disney schedule isn't normal life I decided she'd be ok.

Eventually (we took our time ordering) our appetizers came.
DSCN0864_zps87dca153.jpg

I got the crab cake. It was really good. But honestly the one on the Surf and Surf burger at Landscape of Flavors was better. I guess this was a more traditional cake as it was crispy. But there was not only more crab but much bigger pieces on the burger I had a few days before. It was still tasty though!

For our entrees my husband got a steak, we got Vivien our standard side of broccoli and then shared a portion of our meals with her. And I had the lobster topped burger.

DSCN0866_zpsd59fa36d.jpg

I'm a big fan of this one! Great burger!!

We really took our time, enjoying iced tea and just a nice break. We were seated near a window so got to do a fair bit of people watching too.

For dessert we shared the sampler thing. Which I started nibbling on before I remembered to take a picture of it.

DSCN0867_zps5b49a945.jpg

Which is about the time my daughter spotted the chocolate Mickey and snatched that up. I've trained her well where chocolate is concerned it seems.

IMG_3065_zpsc30e1519.jpg

Also, you can nicely see another one of the bows I got for her before our trip. I had this one, a Sofia the First, Minnie, Belle and a few generic pink bows done too. Personally I was happy with this compromise since she's not really into dressing up yet and too young for the boutiques.

So we let her work on that for a bit.

Then the bill came and we had to move on. We'll definitely make Grand Floridian Cafe part of our plans from now on I think. Great option close to the Magic Kingdom!

After lunch we headed over to check out the gingerbread house.

DSCN0869_zps2a2fde32.jpg

They were doing a lithe decorating demo so we watched that for a little bit. We usually build a gingerbread house each year so it was interesting. I got a few ideas!

After that we took a few Photopass pictures in front of the tree but they didn't come out well at all. There were people dressed up very nicely before and after us so hopefully theirs came out better.

We wanted to get some treats from the gingerbread house but the line was nearly reaching the other side of the lobby so we decided to skip it and head back to Art of Animation.

We gave Vivien the option of boat or monorail to get back to Magic Kingdom so we could get to the buses and she choose the monorail again. So off we went. Then the hike over to the bus stops.

IMG_3067_zpsb7da8bcc.jpg

The Art of Animation stop is really far. On the other hand knowing how close the Contemporary really is (since it's pretty much across the street from the bus stop we used all week) made us rethink that whole "Too Expensive" standpoint we have on that hotel.

IMG_3068_zpse496ebe8.jpg

A monorail, a bus and Space Mountain. Not a bad parting shot of Magic Kingdom if you ask me!

Up next....Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. The Sequel!

Looks like a great lunch! I like doing the later lunch for taking a break too, usually in the park itself, but I like resort dining too! Always wanted to try the cafe!

I'm really glad we gave it a shot. And I have to admit I did so because I saw a few Trip Reports here that included a good report on the experience there. I do love the themeing in the Grand Floridian. That whole early 1900's garden party or whatever feel.

We often use lunch on Magic Kingdom days to explore the surrounding resorts. Since we stay at a value most of the time it was a good way for us to see the deluxes. But now that we're going to be at Shades of Green for our future trips I have a feeling they'll our new stops for most meals.

Man...writing the trip report is really making me want to plan a new trip for later this year!

I'm so glad you tracked me down on here! Just yesterday I was trying to see if there was a trip update from you but "bookmarks" weren't loading.

I'm enjoying your trip report so much! It looks like all three of you are having a magical time! Can't wait to read more!

Evelyn's tutu from your mom is adorable!

I'm sorry you don't think your camera is "the one". I ended up buying a different DSLR on Black Friday but I'm still unsure about this one, too.

I'll be reading along with your report. Thanks again for the message and link.

Happy New Year!

I do think your camera is taking nice pictures!

Even without being a Cars fan it would be really, really hard to not be taken by the Cars section. It look amazing!

I also am a fan of the midday break....sometimes you just need to stop for a minute and relax right. Disney time is no not normal time - all routines fly out the window.

That burger is on my must try list now.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you too! I've missed reading about your Christmas adventures :) I hope you guys had a good holiday this year!!

That tutu is just too cute! I wish we had more ways to use it but it's been so cold lately it's just impractical.

Exactly my thoughts too! Mid-day break can only help you out a lot in my opinion there's always something cool going on at the resort anyways.

It's an excellent camera! I'm really happy with it and I'm glad I bought it. In fact I talked so much about it my mother got one just like it for my Dad for Christmas.

BUT...I really think I should have just gotten the DSLR like I wanted to. The more and more I read the more I think I probably could have figured out enough to get going for Disney. So...I've started a little teeny (right now) fund for one. Hopefully I'll save up enough to buy myself one with a few fun lenses next Black Friday and take a basic photography class to go with it. And if not...there's always the year after. I've got a good camera in the meantime!

The Cars section was unbelievable! I'd stay there again without thinking-especially since I didn't get to hang out in my own Cone Cabana at the Cozy Cone pool!

If you can take Regan over there when you guys are there next time-even if for only 30 min it's so worth a walk through! The food court there is excellent too so there's another excuse!

You know I'd read about that here and was braced for it, but really it wasn't too bad. Wait times were fine. It was just crowded.

Your favorite pic is very nice.
Thanks!

We really did! But despite being there for a shorter amount of time I think we did more the second night we came. Stay tuned! More is coming!!

Great report and pics so far.
Thanks! It was a great trip!!

:wave2:

We spent the rest of the afternoon napping and watching TV in the room. We decided to skip eating at Landscape of Flavors and thought we'd rather try something out in the park. I really wanted a Lobster Roll so our plan was to hit up Big Thunder Mountain again, then progress towards Columbia Harbour House and move in that direction for the night. Easy right?

We got to Magic Kingdom and the lines were moving. It was right at 7pm so they gave us a bracelet right away. But Main St?

While lovely it was a bit crowded.
DSCN0878_zpsde6286a4.jpg

So we made our way through it. Headed left at the castle and did a little back tracking I guess. We certainly stopped for some cocoa and cookies though!

DSCN0889_zps9985a614.jpg

But soon enough we were deciding who got to go first in the 5 min long line.

I wanted a salty snack by then so I let him go and I bought Vivien and myself one of these:

DSCN0896_zps048a63ac.jpg

Which my daughter fell in love with. For the record the amount of popcorn in that bucket could end world hunger I think. There was a ton of it and I hate to say we threw most of it out. But we ended up putting the bucket to good use. On Christmas Day Vivien transferred the contents of her stocking (which was mostly candy) into that and it was a nice container for her.

So we both took a turn on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. And then another turn because why not? Then decided to see what Vivien thought of the pirates.

She wasn't thrilled but not upset either. Just didn't seem to have an opinion. I tried to take some photos (no flash!) but I just need more practice I think. I got pretty lucky with what i did take since the ride didn't stop once.

DSCN0885_zpsd7c4edbb.jpg

Next up? More cookies and cocoa!

We did the Country Bear Jamboree as the parade was starting. Then we weaved our way over to see Woody and the gang again at the dance party. I stood outside for a bit and watched the parade.

After the parade was over we decided we were finally ready to eat so we headed to Columbia Harbor House. Where we realized they weren't serving food. Just cookies and cocoa. So guess what we got? Then we took turns on Haunted Mansion. Then all of us went on Peter Pan. We had to wait about 10 min which wasn't bad at all.

We stared wistfully at It's a Small World while we were in line since it was closed the whole time we were there. After flying through London we strolled right on into the Philharmagic. Vivien got such a kick out of the whole thing. Especially the part at the end with Donald gets stuck in the wall. Too fun to watch her reaction!!

After we got out....

DSCN0906_zps3e0e9a9b.jpg

DSCN0907_zps534d4a64.jpg

The fireworks were going on! Fun.

There still wasn't a wait for the Philharmagic so we went again since Vivien loved it so much. The line for the carousel however was insane when we got out so we headed over to New Fantasyland to see what Belle was up to for the night.

After Belle we were REALLY hungry and noticed that there was no wait at Gaston's so in we went.

DSCN0914_zps0af03089.jpg

We ordered the pork shank to share:

DSCN0915_zpsdc75aeee.jpg

It was perfect! Lots of food for the three of us. We washed it down with another Le Fou's brew. And topped it off with most of this chocolate peppermint cupcake:

DSCN0917_zpsb9265c4b.jpg

It was huge, and just as a cupcake should be. Not dry, not too much icing and a very nice combination of mint flavor to chocolate. One of the best $20 meals we've ever had!

While eating Gaston's suddenly go very crowded. We must have been ahead of some sort of crowd because the wait time for Ariel had shifted from 10 min before we ate to 40! Eek!

So we headed into Storybook Circus.

DSCN0920_zps2a1fce4f.jpg

And I thought I liked this area during the daytime but at night? Wow.

DSCN0930_zps86e4d891.jpg

It's like a real circus. Or what a Circus is like in your mind I suppose.

I think Dumbo at night is just stunning too.

DSCN0937_zps302e9735.jpg

Only I couldn't figure out where to stand to get a good shot. It's just an odd layout I think. I felt like I was in people's way. Which is silly since each time one of the rides went there were only about 5 people on each one.

DSCN0927_zps910a72ac.jpg

Vivien loved it. And the fact that the CM's just let her stay on for 6 rides in a row!!

DSCN0939_zpse6fa6bff.jpg

Eventually though we got off. We knew beforehand that Vivien was tall enough to ride the Barnstormer. And with the wait time being 10 min we thought it was a good night to do so. But...then we watched it a few times and second guessed ourselves. It just looked a bit too intense for her. So instead we decided to go see what Space Mountain was like.

It was awesome.

Then we took a little spin on what I only can refer to as the Peoplemover. Which was exiting because every time we went inside-it stopped for several minutes. It was always in the part of the tunnel or building with nothing to look at too. Not very fun!

We rode Buzz twice and this was the best of my scores.

DSCN0950_zps6f4d8386.jpg

It was disappointing to me because I can do better. BUT we all rode in the same car and Vivien loved that she could turn the car around. So I guess I did pretty well since I had no control of where I was aiming in most cases.

We decided it was time to start making our way out. So we headed towards Main St.

wdw201334327788946_6898752635_18_zpsceb0673b.jpeg

I'm a fairly passive pin collector so we decided to see what they had to offer for the party and ducked into the Emporium.

Nothing. We looked and looked and finally asked a CM about it. He confirmed that they'd sold out of the pins back in November. He thought there might be some t-shirts but didn't think there was much else other than that. And really we weren't interested in anything else since the only thing catching my eye was a Mickey Mouse nutcracker that I saw in EPCOT the day before too. But at $60 it was just beyond what I would spend on something like that. No money spent there!

Oh well.

It was really close to midnight so we headed out but had to make one more stop to see someone very important:

wdw201334327787648_6900091946_18_zps0dac3df7.jpeg

Vivien did really well this year!

I love this one:
wdw201334327787650_6900093716_18_zps29b877d2.jpeg

And one of all three of us:

wdw201334327787651_6898486131_18_zps883b84f1.jpeg

My only complaint when I saw the photos was that they wasn't better lighting there. I mean it's a fixed area right? You'd think the lighting would be better.

But it was definitely midnight by the time we were done. So that was that!! We headed to the bus stop, which seemed further than ever before. I totally get the paying such a premium price to be on the monorail loop now that we're touring with a wee lass like Vivien. Not that it's much work, but man we were tired by the end of the day! Next trip we're staying closer to Magic Kingdom I think.

We got lucky once again as a bus was loading up as we finally made it over there and headed back to Art of Animation.

Did I mention that I love this resort yet? I'm so not a big fan of Cars but seriously...how can you not get a smile on your face walking past this each night:

DSCN0956_zps4fdb0499.jpg

And then check out the detail in the Wheel Well Hotel. This thing is massive!

DSCN0957_zps2326bc4e.jpg

Love that place!

So next up....a steamy tour, witnessing an exceptionally talented artist and another pass at Be Our Guest Restaurant thanks to Fastpass+

Looks like the second party night was just as fun or better than the first. Love the lines during those parties...sorry Small World was not open...even when the song gets stuck in your head all day it is one you sort of must do right!!!

Looks like another super fun evening at MVCMP. I have to say, it's definitely worth doing twice if you've got the cash! We focussed on the parade/fireworks/special stuff the first night, and then just did characters/rides our second party and that was awesome.

Minimal wait times are always awesome!

You know it really was a great night. Thanks to the LONG nap in the middle of the day my daughter was awake through most of it so that made it much easier. We found that doing the parent swap thing was easier with an awake child to interact with while waiting for the other one to finish.

The lines really make it worth it. Next time we go and there's a party I think we'll skip buying a ticket and just visit the park that day starting at 5 or 6. Make it a sleep in and pool day. You can easily get everything in I think.

It's a Small World is actually my husbands favorite ride! He was so looking forward to taking my daughter on it 5 or 6 times while I rode Haunted Mansion (my favorite). I can handle it twice. Then I'm done. But yes, you HAVE to ride it.

The wait times on our trip were great overall but at the party it was just a huge blessing I think. So much done in just a few hours.

I guess I should explain as it was sort of my "fault" we had to go twice.

And I do mean HAD.

When we originally started planning my mother was going to come with us. So when we all booked it we bought tickets for 3 adults to go to the party on Sunday Dec 8th because we didn't want to miss out if it sold out.

Well then my mother said she couldn't go. So we were stuck with a third ticket. We were thinking about actually just giving it away to someone while we were there. But then I realized that I also made reservations for the Tomorrowland Terrace Fireworks thing for the Friday night. A Friday night in Dec that was also a Party night. So I panicked and called. And sure enough...we were going to need tickets to get in. So we had one ticket to many for Sunday the 8th, but two tickets too short of Friday the 6th. What we decided to do was move one ticket to the 6th and buy a second ticket. Because we were either going to spend $60 or loose $60. Suddenly it didn't seem so out of the question to go twice.

And really given that they'll let you into MK without a regular park ticket on party nights...I really think it's possible to do everything you need to do during the party. If/When we go again for Halloween or Christmas we'll likely "extend" our park hopper tickets by attending the party offered at least twice. We used military tickets for our stay anyways, so they were so cheap we didn't really mind "wasting" a day's admission on a morning at Magic Kingdom. We also managed to get quite a bit done that morning so I'm happy with how things worked out.

Well it was Monday, and the last "full" day in WDW for us this trip. A bit of a sad thing for me to wake up to.

My husband on the other hand was really excited.

You see I had planned a teeny surprise for him. He's a big lover of trains, and his grandfather was even a conductor for a railroad so it's something he grew up loving. So obviously I booked the Magic Behind Our Steam Trains tour. I mean, why not?

It started bright and early so since we returned the car already he was reliant on the buses. And while we had exceptional luck with them so far...we didn't want to chance it so he was out there at 6:30 waiting for one. Which apparently came at 6:32. Putting him nearly 45 minutes early. But better than late. He said he read a little while waiting. I must admit I'm a bit jealous that he was waiting outside the Magic Kingdom just enjoying the view and reading a book. Dream moment for me I think! Anyways...soon enough the train pulled up and the tour guides started their work.

DSCN0964_zps145f4eaa.jpg

DSCN0962_zps13ec1418.jpg

The first little nugget of info...there are only two occasions where the engine is in front of the train station like this. One-commericals or other press related events. AND...the tour. Fun!

So once inside they did a little walk through of the station then got on the train and rode over to the wheel house where I guess the real fun began.

DSCN0988_zpsfd4a55d5.jpg

My husband and one of the Engineers. Apparently they do the majority of the upkeep and maintenance on the trains themselves.

Here's a bad photo of the boiler plate (or maybe that's not what it's called, but it has the serial number on it) for this train.
DSCN0970_zps6f14e40b.jpg

The antique trains like this have a plate made out of solid gold. This one is a replication but the original is safe in storage.

They went into a huge amount of detail on how the trains were located, some of the legal tricks they used to get them back into the country. The restoration process and even the naming of the trains. There was also a fair bit of Magic Kingdom history. Like that it was so important to Walt that the work for the construction of Main St begin he signed off on the plans for one of the buildings literally on his death bead.

Other than historical, the Engineers and Conductors were great at giving some excellent information about how the trains actually work.

DSCN1001_zpsb29a2b0a.jpg

They all got a turn to squeeze into the train and check out the valves and whatnot.

DSCN0979_zps00734600.jpg

I like the monorail hanging out in the background of this one...
DSCN1010_zps3d6a02b7.jpg

DSCN0969_zps6e443469.jpg

Overall it was a great tour. A fantastic way to start off a day in the Magic Kingdom. In just over 3 hours there was a ton of information shared. Lots of photo opportunities and my husband even got inspired to start looking for a job!

Plus...at the end you get a pin!

IMG_3107_zps49edb1de.jpg

As they were passing them out the Engineer said that he hates seeing them on eBay and not to try selling them. But mentioned that if we posted on a website we had one we'd get offers. And wouldn't you know it...as soon as we were home I posted it to the Pin Trading subreddit on Reddit and the first comment was to ask if I was willing to sell it!

The engineer he talked to the most said that they had 6 openings. It wasn't long before my husband was checking (and has been checking) available jobs on the website the engineer told him to watch on. He's still checking periodically I think.

So would I quite my job so we could move across the country and my husband could be a conductor for the Walt Disney World Railroad? Yup. I sure would.

Especially if it meant that we were able to visit WDW on a regular basis. Talk about a dream job!
