It's the end of the world as we know it...

Is it me, or does there seem to be a whole lot more earthquakes happening lately? It seems like every few days there is another pretty major earthquake shaking up a different part of the world. Add to that other major events like the volcano in Iceland and the supposed bad hurricane season that is coming it makes me wonder.... is this normal activity? I know there is all this talk about 2012 being "the end" and I KNOW that all it amounts to in reality is a good plot for a movie, but ever now and then I get to wondering..... Could there be something to it?

I will keep paying the mortgage just in case there isn't. ;)

I know. It makes me wonder sometimes, too. Then last winter all the talk of a " global pandemic" with the swine flu. If I hear about any swarms of locusts......:scared1:

I just think we have global, near instantaneous news coverage.

There have been earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, plagues, periods of hot and cold weather, etc. throughout our long history on earth. We just have better tools to track, monitor, analyze, etc.

And people have been predicting the end of the world for centuries. Still hasn't happened yet.

IMO the only thing you can do is live each day to the fullest and make reasonable plans for the future.

This reasoning makes me feel a lot better. But, I still know what you mean OP!! Sometimes it's just scary to think about. Like Tinkermommy said, just live each day to the fullest!!

Actually, the earthquakes was mention on GMA a couple months ago.

It was said that the earthquakes aren't happening any more frequently. It's just that more of them are happening in populated areas right now.
Many earthquakes happen way out at sea and never result in a tsunami or in one that reaches inhabited land. So far, they haven't been happening more frequently in total numbers.

I'm not too worried.

It seems to be one thing after another the last few months....volcanoes, earthquakes, oil spills, gas explosions, giant sink holes, on and on and on.

Maybe those Mayans knew what they were talking about! lol :scared1:

Really, the number of large earthquakes are not that far off from normal. They just seemed to be more bunched up and in populated areas. thus we are hearing about them more. Add in the ability for the information to get out on TV and the internet and you have what looks like an abnormal about of Earthquakes.

According to the USGS, there are about 134 earthquakes a year that rate 6.0-6.9, 15 that rate 7.0-7.9, and 1 that rates 8.0 + (since 1990). We are currently at 82 6.0-6.9, 8 7.0-7.9, and 1 8.0+. Considering we are already in June and the numbers seem to be following the trend.

Do I think the world is coming to an end? No..

But I really don't feel confortable with how unpredictable the weather has become in the past few years - the severity of the storms; floods; snowstorms; hurricanes; earthquakes; etc.. It's kind of like always waiting for the other shoe to drop.. Going from 90 degrees to snow 2 days later is plain crazy in my book.. LOL..

I dub thee "Chicken Little" :rotfl2:

Honestly though, it is just because we have so much more information available then in the past. Even 10 years ago, we we not as connected with all the outlets we are now.

it's "as we know it" not we we...
Go to edit post, select advance, then you can change the title.

i think part of the problem is we're too connected now. And know of everything going on.
Is it the end of Earth? No. But i believe we're heading into our own destruction. We're trying too hard to mold the earth to our needs rather than letting earth take its own course. Mudslides, forest fires, sink holes, freezing temps in the far south, extreme heat in the far north. It's nothing new, it just inconviences us. And thats part of the reason why we hear about it so greatly.

The planet is constantly evolving and will probably do so for centuries to come. As always, we will evolve with these changes. Perhaps, the changes we should be more concerned with are with how we deal with our own society. If your feet hit the floor in the morning and it looks to be a good day ahead, go to Disney! :thumbsup2

I really think television puts too much spin on EVERYTHING! I feel all the same "stuff" is going on all the time ... we just hear and SEE it faster. And the "mood" on TV can be a real Debbie Downer ...

There are great things all around us happening everyday ... you just need to look for them.

... but this is just my opinion. ( ... and yes, I am still paying my mortgage ...)
